The New York State Seal and the Two Sentinels

     A question came to me after writing about the Christian Science Sentinel’s cover changes in my last post.  “Why did the two women have their eyes shut at first and then later on, that same year, have their eyes open?”  Certainly, to be a sentinel you must have your eyes open.  What was it that Mary Baker Eddy was symbolizing when she had their eyes shut?

The following is a continuation from my last post Paul Smillie’s Twenty-fourth Question.  This post begins with the material from Paul R. Smillie’s book MARY BAKER EDDY (page 313). Mr. Smillie’s first edition book was written in the 1980’s and what he writes still holds true today. After this I will quote from one of Doris Grekel’s biographies on Mary Baker Eddy, some writings by Augusta E. Stetson, C.S.D., and then there is a quote by Mary Baker Eddy.  After this first group of footnotes are two more Augusta Stetson sections that I felt fit in with this post so I added them, you could say that they are post post.  They both have their own grouping of footnotes (I did an experiment, so they are a little different).   All of my interpolations will be in number group brackets.

Paul Smillie’s Twenty-fourth Question

     Recently, on a game show, there was a question about Tom Cruise.  The contestants were to name something that was well known about him.  One woman said, “He is a Christian Scientist.”  Well, this was not so.  Her more intelligent family member said, “He is a member of the Church of Scientology.”  This was correct.  It is a sad state of affairs when the world does not know enough about Christian Science to keep anyone from confusing it with the cult (bad use of the word) the Church of Scientology.  What is the difference between the two?  The important difference is that Christian Science defeats animal magnetism while the Church of Scientology employs the use of animal magnetism!  The following excerpt helps us to understand why such a mistake could even take place today.  It is from Paul Smillie’s book (2nd edition) MARY BAKER EDDY The Prophetic and Historical Perspective.  It begins on page 303.  [My comments will be within brackets.]
