TAROT CARDS’ SPIRITUAL MEANING
Pamela Colman Smith was the designing artist of the Rider-Waite Deck Tarot Cards. According to the box that the cards came in she was “under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite”. They were with the Order of the Golden Dawn and this particular deck came out in 1910. “Waite was able to restore in great part the original symbolic meanings that had been lost or changed in the passage of time. There are those who say that the symbols had been deliberately changed, in some cases to throw the Roman Church off the track and prevent the priests from appropriating the Tarot’s verities for their own purposes.”
“The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded in England in 1886 as a result of the discovery and deciphering of some ancient manuscripts on occult initiation.” I do not pretend to know what this group really did, or how they thought along spiritual lines, but the word “occult” simply means: “to hide from sight, conceal”. Somehow Tarot and Qabalistic (also Kabalah or Cabala) Symbolism are tied together, and when we come to the Rider Deck, it may be more closely tied together than the average person realizes. (And I have serious doubts that people who read the cards for fortune telling have the slightest idea what the Cards are really even presenting symbolically.) What I mean by this is that there is a definite KEY CARD – the Ten (or X) of Pentacles (or Coins). On this card are ten pentacle coins and they are placed on the card in order to represent the ten Spheres on the Kabalah Tree of Life. This KEY CARD is useful in understanding the rest of the deck, for with its use you know what is placed on the card is found to be located for a specific sphere or a particular path of the Tree. So in order to really understand the symbolism of the Tarot one must become familiar with the Kabalah Tree of Life Matrix. I believe that this would take many years for someone to accomplish! I have not really wanted to dedicate myself to this particular study, but I do find it quite interesting.
How did I come to this realization about the Tarot Cards and the Kabalah Tree of Life? Well, I could not figure out why the artist had placed certain items on the cards like she (he?) did. What was the point? I realize that there is a limited amount of space and each card is rectangular in shape. But I wondered what was the reasoning behind the placement of each figure (and items) on the cards.
One day I noticed that the window in the Five (V) of Pentacles looked somewhat like the Tree of Life. I mentioned this to my young son. And it was actually my son who recognized that the X of Pentacles presented the Tree of Life. It was then it all began to make since, it answered my questions about why objects on the cards were placed where they were. They represented certain spheres and certain paths. And when I came to understand this very point it was then that I realized the genius behind each and every card by its artist (or artists).
I will be honest with you I have doubt that Waite even knew what Smith was up to. But I might be wrong. I think she was the one behind the placement of everything on the cards, but again, I could be wrong. One reason why I think this way is because of the way that Pamela Colman Smith signed the Cards. Her three initials resemble the Kabala Tree of Life! The first clear signature is found on THE HIGH PRIESTESS. it is located at the bottom of the right Pillar. The S initial is cut off on THE MAGICIAN Key Card, and if there is one on THE FOOL then it is really hidden quite well. You can see her initials in the bottom righthand corner of the Five of Pentacles (above).
One other thing about the Tarot Cards, just because the topic is death or the devil does not necessarily mean that the card is a bad sign or has an evil purpose. Also, I will not deal with the inversion of the cards (where cards are dealt upside down), because I do not want to spend time on it, however, they too would have to be interpreted along with the Tree of Life Matrix.
One thing that Golden Dawn wanted to do was to place THE FOOL (Card 0) at the beginning of the pack. They felt that this was of most importance. “A word about Key 0, the Fool. Actually, it stands more or less alone, and there is no concrete evidence that it should be positioned as the first card of the Major Arcana. It is both before and after the 21 Keys—the sum total of all.” This actually makes since in regard to my Goal Post Matrix (which I speak more of below).
About THE FOOL I wrote, “‘I came from the Father, I return to the Father.’ He is the Christ man, or the Son of God.”
It is not really known how old the Tarot is, but in one book, the author believes it is dated to “Israel’s 2,000-year exile.” Although I find Mr. Krafchow’s book of interest I do believe that he has missed out on the understanding of the KEY Card and how it opens up the secrets of the Tarot Cards (especially the Rider Deck which he works with). He writes on page 1, “These seventy-eight numbered and illustrated cards are believed to have their roots in the earliest Jewish spiritual tradition. The current cards have been used for over five hundred years, since the time of the Spanish Inquisition and the forced conversions of the Jewish people to Christianity. But the tarot’s origins far predate modern history. I am convinced that tarot originated as a clandestine means for the captive tribes of Israel to study their sacred texts. The configuration of images and symbols embedded in the cards reflects the ancient esoteric knowledge known as Cabala. By exploring the historic roots and cabalistic elements of the tarot, we can derive the fullest and truest meaning from this ancient instrument.
“The pictures on the cards are an outgrowth of the first captivity of the people of Israel in Egypt. There the children of Israel were slaves in a land where written language took the form of pictures—hieroglyphics. The experience of living in subjection in Egypt and the subsequent exodus therefrom fused the twelve tribes into one people. It also indelibly engraved picture language upon the oral traditions and legends of the people.”
This being said, if the tarot are rooted to the Israelites, even though other authors on the subject think they may have their roots elsewhere, then it is simple to understand that what was placed upon these cards (in symbol form) was a TORAH Code, or what we would call today a BIBLE Code, the Code used in the BIBLE, a utilization of symbols. Thus, what Mary Baker Eddy told us is true, that, “Spiritual teaching must always be by symbols.” (SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, p. 575:13-14)
Further on page 3, he writes, “After Roman general Titus destroyed the Second Temple in 70 c. e., a group of rabbis succeeded in persuading the Romans to give them the city of Yavneh, where they presided for over two hundred years. There they wrote and assembled the Talmud. Composed in two sections, Mishnah and Gemara, the Talmud speaks in riddles and is rich in implication. Many archetypes employed in the tarot cards are drawn from the Talmud.
“A thousand years after the Talmud was completed, the cards resurfaced [after the “Maccabes expelled the Greeks from Israel in 164 b. c. e.”] — in response first to Jewish disputations with Catholic theologians, then to political and religious persecutions, and ultimately to the Inquisition. The tarot enabled those who would be true to the faith of Israel to study Torah without detection.
“Reading the cards in these dangerous times had to be a game played as much through eye contact and the use of subtle gestures as by overt interpretation. The remnants of this interplay may still be found in the gesticulations and comic theater practiced in yeshivas (Jewish houses of learning) around the world.”
In regards to Mary Baker Eddy’s Illustrated Poem Christ and Christmas it too has symbols of TRUTH depicted in symbol form with a Left Side (Life – a beginning), a Center (Truth – a middle), and a Right Side (Love an end) for each Illustration.
Illustration VII (above) depicts a young girl sitting on a foursquare chair. While she does not hold a Torah in her hand, she does hold the KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES – SCIENCE AND HEALTH, by Mary Baker Eddy. “The standard of legibility for a Torah scroll is set by a child: If the child can read the letter, then it is a valid letter.”
In Illustration IX it is Mary Baker Eddy who holds a scroll – it reads “Christian Science”.
Again, in Illustration X we have the woman (God-crowned) knocking on the door, she represents the center Pillar of Truth as she stands between the left Pillar of Life and the right Pillar of Light (Love). In her hand she holds a scroll that reads “TRUTH”.
The Torah is depicted in THE HIGH PREISTESS Card and the letters for it are found on THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE Card. “In addition to the written Torah, there are three more levels of Torah knowledge, which are referred to collectively as the oral Torah: the Law, or Talmud; the Metaphor, or Midrash; and the Secret, or Zohar. [These four levels of Torah knowledge could be represented by the four living creatures found in the corners of the WHEEL of FORTUNE Key Card – but for sure the four living creatures represent the four Gospels.] This labyrinthine web of knowledge allowing for innumerable nonconflicting interpretations was transmitted orally for more than a thousand years. The oral tradition can be likened to the flesh upon the human skeleton—the law resides in the head, the story (metaphor) in the heart, and the secret between the legs. The flesh and form of the body change throughout one’s life but the skeleton (the written Torah) always remains the same.”
Eden Gray writes an important point in regard to the Second Coming of Christ: “Astrologers through the centuries have tried to predict the arrival of new world teachers and new epochs of civilization through adding to and subtracting from Biblical dates. The Aquarian Age is said to have started in a.d. 1882, but this date cannot be fixed as there is still considerable controversy as to the date of the beginning of the Piscean Age. So much was predicted about the Second Coming that the Crusades were preached in every country of Europe as a Christian duty, to clear the Holy Land of infidels before Christ’s arrival. Perhaps the whole episode of the Crusades can be laid at the feet of astrologers.”
Perhaps the Age of Aquarius did not begin in 1882; however, there was a very important sign in heaven (space) that did point to the Second Coming of Christ. It is a fact that in December of 1882 Venus traversed the sun, a second time, – fulfilling Bible prophecy for the Second Coming of Christ. It was on July 10, 1882 that Mary Baker Eddy acknowledged her role as the woman God-crowned. She had written all but one chapter of her Textbook, SCIENCE AND HEALTH, before the first Venus transit in December 1874 took place. (Venus made two transits across the sun, during Mary Baker Eddy’s God-crowned mission. It also takes eight years for Venus to form the shape of a pentacle as it travels in the sky.
Eden Gray also writes: “The Christian religion, as we have known it, is felt by many to be losing vitality, and the new Aquarian religion has not yet been revealed. Many have predicted a new savior who has already been born in the East and who will lead us into a universal religion that all present faiths can join in proclaiming. The Tarot and Astrology both show the necessity of combining and balancing force and form, and their followers will probably be among the first to recognize and follow the religion of the dawning Aquarian Age.”
I find this quite interesting, that Gray is ignorant of the fact that the “new Aquarian religion” has already been revealed. And this religion is known as Christian Science. Christian Science was born in the East; that is the East Coast of the United States of America. It was in the East (for the Christ) in the Eastern Hemisphere where the masculine God-crowned mission of Christ Jesus took place. And it is in the West (for Science) – the Western Hemisphere – where the feminine God-crowned mission of Christ Mary Baker Eddy took place. Unfortunately, many people in the world today are unaware of Mary Baker Eddy’s God-crowned mission because her Church (followers?) has done its best to lie about who she is and to hide the Truth about her.
When I first began looking into Tarot cards I found it interesting that it patterned things I had learned in Christian Science – with the seven, the four, and the four (more along John W. Doorly’s teachings which are based upon Mary Baker Eddy’s Textbook teachings). There is the four – the divine infinite calculus – found as the four suits – the Wands (for the Word), the Pentacles (for the Christ), the Swords (for Christianity), and the Cups (for Science). And these suits coincide with the Kabalah Tree of Life’s Four Worlds along with the four elements.
The Four Worlds (actually there are Five Worlds, but the fifth one is found in the material realm), I feel, represent the four levels of Science. I am presenting the Four Worlds from the highest level or realm of thought and descend on down to the lowest level or realm of thought.
Atziluth is the World where God works directly through archetypes (the original patterns of Mind) with the element of Fire (purification) for the Wands (Word). And Fire goes along with Leo in astrology, which is nullified by the first living creature, the Lion (moral courage) of Judah. I feel like Atziluth goes along with the level of Science itself.
Briah is the World where creation takes place through archangels (who have the face of a man) with the element of Air (mental treatment) for the Swords (Christianity). And Air (mental treatment) goes along with Aquarius in astrology, which is nullified by the third living creature, who has the face of a man. I feel like Briah is the level of absolute Christian Science.
Yetzirah is the World where formation occurs through angels (who have wings like an eagle) with the element of Water (spiritual teachings) for the Cups (Science). And Water (spiritual teachings) goes along with Scorpio in astrology, which is nullified by the fourth living creature, the flying eagle. I feel like Yetzirah goes along with the level of divine Science.
Assiah is the World where the material world works through (the four) elements (negated by the divine infinite calculus) and signs (symbols) of the Zodiac (negated by the twelve Stargates) with the element of the Earth (foundation) for the Pentacles (Christ). And Earth goes along with Taurus in astrology, which is nullified by the second living creature, the Ox or Bull. I feel like Assiah goes along with the level of Christian Science.
The Physical World is the fifth World. It is located, on the Kabala Tree of Life, beneath the lowest Sphere – Malkuth. It is a world of illusion and material lies. It is the land of Adam man, who was created out of the physical elements – fire, earth, air, and water. Together the earth and water make mud – the red mud that becomes Adam man. The fire is the electric lightning bolt that supposedly gave life to the primordial soup. I feel that this World is nullified by the fifth element known as divine Principle, Love.
Where I believe Christian Science is separate in teaching is in the fact that Christian Science understands the physical world to be unreal (not TRUTH). While I believe the Cabala, or Kabala, teaches that the physical world is as real as spiritual reality. Even though “the Torah can always be reduced down to four” I am not sure that it completely understands what this four is as the divine infinite calculus. In Kabbalistic Tarot the author explains the four as “the four-letter name of the Creator, the four worlds, the four elements, and the four levels of Torah. The Creator’s Name, the original Name from which all names stem, has four letters: the male letter Yod, followed by the female letter Hey, the male Vav, and ending with the second Hey (YHVH). When placed vertically, they represent the four spirit worlds. In the tarot the four spirit worlds are represented through the four elements—fire, wind, water, and earth—which in turn are represented by the four suits.” I feel, that sense these four letters (actually only three letters) are considered to be masculine or feminine that they present God as: Father, Mother, Son (the Lamb?), and Daughter (the Lamb’s Bride?). I also believe that the reason why the same letter is used for Mother and Daughter is because Mother and Bride are the same womanly consciousness.
Krafchow continues on (page 10-12) to tell us that the “four spiritual worlds—Atzilut (the World of Emanations), Briah (the World of Creation), Yetzirah (the World of Formation), and Aziyah (the World of Action)—are the source of life for the human, the animal, the plant, and the earth. There is nothing in creation that does not have a spiritual component. A primary difference between the physical and the spiritual is that in the physical domain all things are eroding, decaying, evaporating, or dying, whereas in the spirit world nothing dies.” Is not the reason why everything in the physical world erodes, decays, evaporates, and dies, is because the physical world is unreality, that it is nothing but illusion?
“The four spirit worlds and the physical world are distinguished by the amount of divine light that filters through them. The highest of the four spirit worlds is called Atzilut, from the word meaning ‘close,’ because it is the closest world to the infinite light of the Creator, the light of infinite potential. It is representative of the soul. [There is only Soul, man does not have a soul of his own, however, man does reflect God’s Soul.] The highest world of Atzilut can be compared to the human soul that funnels life to the body.
“The next three worlds, Briah, Yetzirah, and Ashiyah, are associated with our earthly life, and the ego that recognizes the difference between Creator and creation.”
What creation is Krafchow thinking about? God, the only Creator, did not create a physical world. What is the physical world then? It is reality’s shadow. Which creation story are you going to accept? Do you accept the spiritual, the first creation story, located in the first chapter of Genesis (and the Sabbath Day being located in Genesis 2:1-3)? Or are you going to accept the second false creation story about Adam (fallen man)? One is real (Truth); the other is shadow (obscuration of Truth). However, I feel that the following may help explain what shadow is.
Again, I prefer to think of these four worlds as four levels of Science. They would only have to do with types of spiritual creation, and what level of conscious thought we are working in or working with – such as – Christian Science, absolute Christian Science, divine Science, and Science itself.
Each Zodiac has its accompanying Tarot Card. The four following Signs and Cards represent the four living creatures or the divine infinite calculus.
I feel that the lion is red, on this Key Card, in order to represent the element of fire. Yet, in the BIBLE the color red is negative. Red represents error and mortal mind as with: Adam, a woman’s menstrual period, Esau, and the serpent-dragon. Since I use red to symbolize divine Mind, the opposite of divine Mind, which is mortal mind, would also be red symbolically.
“Leo, the Lion…Strength, No. VIII
“Leo [the Word] is a fire [purification] sign and one with the power of the Sun [the Christ]. It has radiance, authority, and centripetal powers. Leo draws things to it as does the woman in Key 8, Strength, who through her spiritual radiance controls the lion. [I believe this woman to be a typification of Mary Baker Eddy.] Over her head is the same cosmic lemniscate that is over the head of the Magician [a typification of Jesus], indicating that she has the same powers over natural forces [matter] as symbolized here by the lion.”
“Taurus, the Bull…the Hierophant [Pope], No. V
“Taurus [the Christ] is an earth [foundation] sign and represents stability and mature conviction—those who are retentive of what they possess, be it worldly goods or ideas. The Hierophant, Key 5, belongs to Taurus, for though he is a priest [he is actually the head priest – the Pope who is supposed to be Jesus’ successor, but he is not], he surrounds himself with worldly possessions [because he is not the true Christ successor]; he is thought of as stable and mature in his conduct, preferring the outer forms and ritual to the invisible things of the spirit [again, because he is not the true Christ successor].”
It is believed that the Pope has the Keys to the Kingdom of God, but he does not! The Keys are the BIBLE and SCIENCE AND HEALTH.
“Aquarius, the Waterman…the Star, No. XVII
“The symbol for Aquarius [a man of Christian Science] represents the waves made when water [spiritual teachings] is poured from the Waterman’s urn [water pitcher]. It is an air sign and therefore mental. With impersonal love and altruism [unselfishness], Aquarius gives to all humanity and deals with their problems. Key 17, the Star, is a card of meditation, a mental occupation, the mind reaching out to grasp the solution to problems. Aquarians are said to be intuitive, fond of occult research, and of a naturally meditative turn of mind.”
Aquarius represents Christianity, or the Christian man, the follower of the Christ man known to be Jesus. However, the Age of Aquarius did not come until (1882?), or perhaps even after (1996?), the Christ woman known as Mary Baker Eddy was on the scene.
“Scorpio, the Scorpion…Judgment, No. XX
“Scorpio is a water (spiritual teachings of Science) sign and hence deals with the emotions. It is said to concern both death and regeneration. Tarot Key 20, sometimes called the Last Judgment, represents the final state of personal consciousness [personal sense], which has at last risen from the grave of materiality [has risen out of the false belief that Life exists in matter]. Those whose coffins float on the [red dragon’s] sea of the great subconscious as if they were dead are now regenerated by the trumpet blast of final liberation [Gabriel, angle of the Seventh Day].”
It is in the Seventh Day, during the Age of Aquarius, that the last Trump will be given by the Seventh Angel of Love. People are not really rising up from coffins, people who have been physically dead, but rather, people are rising up from the false believe that Life, Truth, intelligence, and substance reside in matter. They are waking up out of the Adam dream that Mind, Spirit, and Soul are placed in a matter body via sexual intercourse and are held captive by this material body until a moment called death.
It seems as if there is a lot going on or a lot is being put together – what with the Tarot, the Kabalah Tree of Life, the Zodiac, etc. There is a lot of dogma (human belief) put into these systems and thus, man must be skeptical in their studies. But, I feel that it all can become based on the same system of Science once these types of teachings are scientifically and spiritually translated back to God. And that is what I try to do. Mary Baker Eddy did not come out and say that astrology was evil, what she did say was that astrology is secondary. What is it secondary to? It is secondary to God’s metaphysical Science.
Mr. Krafchow, beginning on page 12, presents — DIVINE PATTERNS: THE MATRIX OF THE TAROT. The Major Arcana has 22 cards while the Minor arcana has 56 cards making for a total of 78 cards. He tells us that the “word arcana derives from the word arcane, or ‘secret.’” Remember the word occult has the same meaning. He tells us, “Three obvious cabalistic patterns can be discerned in these sets of cards. First, the twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana correspond with the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Second, within the Minor Arcana are four suits, or decks, which correspond with the four spirit worlds and the related four elements. Third, each suit has fourteen cards. The number fourteen correlates to the ten parts of the body known as the Sefirot [also Sephiroth] and the five parts of the soul.”
The following is what he provides for us, however, I have put them in a different order and have added to it. His words will be in italic writing.
On the diagram for The four worlds, in the Krafchow book (page 15), there is a human body with a tree of life diagram overlaid on top. At the highest point where the Sphere (Sefirot or Sephiroth) of Kether (Crown) is located, it is titled Atzilut, next down (where the third eye would be located) is Briah, then in the stomach area and the Sphere of Tiphareth is Yetzirah, then between the legs and the Sphere of Yesod is Asiyah, and finally beneath the feet is the physical world.
Atzilut “is a world of fire. In this world, the essence of life, the male and the female, is at one with the Creator.” This being said, the male and female must also be one with each other, where they are not two married humans but one divine being. Or, as Mary Baker Eddy put it: “The Lamb’s wife presents the unity of male and female as no longer two wedded individuals, but as two individual natures in one; and this compounded spiritual individuality reflects God as Father-Mother, not as a corporeal being. In this divinely united spiritual consciousness, there is no impediment to eternal bliss, — to the perfectibility of God’s creation.” (S&H 577:4-11) This is the world of Soul. Fire is baptismal in purpose, it burns off that which is impure and what is left is purified, therefore what is left must be reality. Mary Baker Eddy defines fire as “Fear; remorse; lust; hatred; destruction; affliction purifying and elevating man.” (S&H 586:13) I believe that she is saying – fear, remorse, lust, hatred, destruction, and affliction lead us or drive us to being purified and elevated up from material belief – where we believe that life exists in matter. “Fire indicates the future, for light illuminates what is before us. In the tarot, the Staff is the symbol of fire.” The Word of God is where we begin in Science. Whether that Word is audible or visual it is rooted to God’s Science.
Asiyah as “the world of action, is symbolized by the coin, or Pentacle, as in the Rider-Waite deck. [I say that the coin or Pentacle (a five-pointed Star) is the symbol for the Christ – “The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.” (S&H 583:10)] It takes a lot of soul/fire, thoughts/air, emotions/water to forge the coin. [To spiritually translate this, I would say that the Christ is Soul, Mind, and Spirit.] Similarly, it takes all our capacity to make our mark in the physical world [I ask, why would anyone want to make their mark in the physical world of unreality?].” Asiyah is divine Science where the Christ resides. The Christ, even though it is the “divine manifestation of God,” must be born or come to the flesh (via the legs) in order to destroy incarnate error – the belief that Life resides in matter.
The Pentacle itself depicts the Star of Venus (with its five points of light), or the morning star (Jesus promised us). This Star is the true representation of Venus, as it travels the path in space over its eight-year period to form a pentacle shape or outline. So why does Mary Baker Eddy change the five points to seven points in Christ and Christmas and in the little Edifice Windows of, the Skylight, in the Vestry, in Mother’s Room, and in WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK? It is because five points take us up to the point of Life (or the Fifth Day of Life with Christ Jesus), but in order to be complete man needs two more points of illumination to take place after Jesus’ God-crowned mission takes place – for Christian Science. Truth and Love must shine its light upon man/woman – or generic man. So, there are two more Christ Advents that take place after Jesus – one that takes place during the Sixth Day of Truth for absolute Christian Science and one that takes place during the Seventh Day of Love for divine Science.
Briah as “the world of thought, is exemplified by the element of air, the invisible. Thinking is the closest we come to conscious spiritual experience. Like the air, our thoughts cannot be seen and possess little weight but they are inexorably there. The Sword, because it cuts through the air, is a symbol of the invisible and represents air in the tarot.” I believe that the Sword represents Truth (a double edged blade) where Truth destroys error and at the same time enables us to recognize the Truth that spiritual Being is the only Being. Christian knights used the sword in their battles against error. It was Christ Jesus who first healed with mental (air) thoughts. This was the art of Christian Science during the Christianity period. This art was lost around 300 years after Christ’s God-crowned mission. It is the Christian that must utilize absolute Christian Science in his/her healing practice. It is absolute Christian Science that is found within the subjective consciousness of man, and it is here where mental healing takes place. For before the physical (matter) objective picture (illusion) can change the mental must come to terms with what is absolute – and that is Spirit. It was Mary Baker Eddy’s God-crowned mission that taught absolute Christian Science and healed through mental terms only. There was to be no medicine applied to the patients, there was to be no more touching with hands on the patient’s physical body. Christian Science Treatment was totally mental.
Yetzirah as “the world of emotions, is associated with the element water. The nature of liquid is to spread unless it is constrained. Emotions tend to overflow their vessel or, when dammed up, become a considerable force. The Cup represents the element in the tarot.”
“‘Go and take the little book [which is SCIENCE AND HEALTH]….Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.’ Mortals, obey the heavenly evangel. Take divine Science. Read this book from beginning to end. Study it, ponder it. It will be indeed sweet at its first taste, when it heals you; but murmur not over Truth, if you find its digestion bitter. When you approach nearer and nearer to this divine Principle, when you eat the divine body of this Principle, — thus partaking of the nature, or primal elements, of Truth and Love, — do not be surprised nor discontented because you must share the hemlock cup and eat the bitter herbs; for the Israelites of old at the Paschal meal thus prefigured this perilous passage out of bondage into the El Dorado [the City of Christ] of faith and hope [two Second Degree transitional qualities of Life].” (S&H 559:17-21; [My interpolations.]) Water is symbolic of spiritual teachings, the spiritual teachings found in the BIBLE (for some Torah) and SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES. The Word, of the books (the Lamb and the Bride), is not sweet or bitter, but the discipline of practicing Christian Science in order to heal the objective world around us is sometimes sweet and sometimes bitter. The words are sweet to us but become bitter when we must discipline our thinking. Because we are taught in Christian Science that we heal the objective only through mental means (absolute Christian Science in the subjective consciousness) we are able to see the healing take place in the physical world which lies beneath our feet, even our feet (that which stands upon the moon) is above the physical world of illusion on the Tree of Life diagram.
THE MINOR ARCANA
The four suits (Wand, Pentacle, Swords, Cups) of the Minor Arcana represent the four worlds, or the four levels of Science, as well as, the divine infinite calculus (known as the four living creatures). The “tarot further separates each of the four suites into two sections: one of nine cards (Two through Ten), representing the body, and one of five cards (the royal cards: Page, Knight, Queen, King, and Ace), representing the soul.” I prefer to say that the body represents the Christian Field, or the Mass of Christ, while the Christ represents the Head of the Royals (not the five physical senses but the five elements of thought – the Word, the Christ, Christianity, Science, and Principle, Love). And this Christ Head, or Mind of Christ is Soul. “The nine numbered cards plus the set of royal cards mirror the cabalistic construct known as the Ten Sefirot [on the Tree of Life]. Each numbered card’s meaning derives in part from the attributes of its corresponding Sefira. The number one [Ace] is missing because it is replaced [I think it is more that it is repositioned] with the five court cards, which relate to the five parts of the soul [Christ Head]…The Ten Sefirot are grouped in three categories corresponding to the three lower spirit worlds—the intellect, the emotions, and action.”
The Ten Sefirot are: 1 – Keter (or Kether), 2 – Chochma (or Chockmah), 3 – Binah, 4 – Chesed, 5 – Gevurah (or Geburah), 6 – Tiferet (or Tephareth), 7 – Hod, 8 – Netzach, 9 – Yesod, 10 – Malchut (or Malkuth), and 11 – Daat. Daat is usually invisible, and it is located on the center Pillar, underneath Chockmah and Binah (around the upper chest area). (See the Tree of Life diagram directly below to see where Daat is located at.) I find it interesting that this book’s diagrams depict the man being one with the Tree of Life Matrix, because in the story of Adam, I believe that his body (called Eden) represents the tree of knowledge of good and evil (the opposite of the Tree of Life). Or rather, that the tree of knowledge (physical science) is mistaken as being good (Spirit, Science itself) and evil (matter) mixed in a corporeal body (garden), and the serpent is coiled around the tree trunk (back bone) of Adam man. Adam’s brain, of course, is the counterfeit of the Christ Head. Kether is above the man’s head (brain), while Malkuth, or Malchut, is on the legs just below the knees.
The author says that Chochma “is represented by the five royal cards—the five parts of the soul as it manifests in the body.” Of course, Soul never enters matter; to say that it does is spiritualism. The five royal cards are the Page, the Knight, the Queen, the King, and the Ace. Again, I feel that these five cards represent the Word, the Christ, Christianity, Science and Principle, Love.
THE MAJOR ARCANA AND THE AIN [Mind]
The Major Arcana consists of 22 Cards. THE FOOL being Card 0 is what I call the Goal Post Card. What I mean by this is that it can be placed at the beginning of the Major Arcana or at the end of the Major Arcana. What this means is that THE FOOL could represent the physical world (way below Malkuth) matter = no thing at all, or it could represent the three AIN which are found above Kether. “Above the Tree are three curved lines. The one at the top represents Ain—Absolute Nothing, the NIL [immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God in light]. Next comes Ain Soph—Total Light [immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God in reflection]; the lowest is Ain Soph Aur—Limitless Light [immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God in spiriutal and immortal forms of beauty and goodness]. These are the three aspects of zero, 0, which precede No. 1, Kether. Kether might be called CAUSE; the next eight Sephiroth can be thought of as the MEANS by which, in Malkuth, No. 10, we have the final effect. The Kabala attempts to symbolize the emanation of ALL from Ain by using the analogy of Light. First, the Nothing—NIL, in which ALL IS [GOD]; then coming down into [GOD’S] expression [which is man] in Kether, condensed Light. This idea is suggested in Genesis: ‘And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters [the subconscious, the yet unformed]. And God said, Let there be light [Mind]; and there was light [Mind reflected as man].’ It has been said that the entire Bible can be more fully understood after a study of the Kabalah.”
I borrowed the following, as read in the paragraph above, in some of the above interpolations, from Mary Baker Eddy’s explanation of Genesis 1:3: “Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God; first, in light; second, in reflection; third, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness. But this Mind creates no element nor symbol of discord and decay. God creates neither erring thought, mortal life, mutable truth, nor variable love.” (S&H 503:20)
I take the other 21 Cards of the Major Arcana and divide them into three groups, thus we have three columns as found in the Tree of Life – the Pillar of Severity (on the left); the Pillar of Mildness (in the center, is a pillar of balance between Severity and Mercy); and the Pillar of Mercy (on the right).
Cards I-VII are for the Pillar of Severity, Cards VIII-XIV for the Pillar of Mildness, and Cards XV-XXI are for the Pillar of Mercy. I place the lower numbered Cards on the bottom and place the next higher Card above the lower numbered Card; this is because they are all Trump Cards (which have nothing to do with President Trump).
The Major Arcana relates to the twenty-two letters in the Hebrew alphabet. The author says something of interest about the Arcana, in that the Major Arcana represents “the fifth element—the pure, unique soul—starlike in dimension, connected to the body through a thread of light.” I do not agree with this last statement (his use of soul), however, it does seem to be this way from a material point of view. “The human being is both male and female, so the essence of the human, the soul in its most pristine state, is also male and female.” A more factual and correct way of stating this is that the human being reflects both the male and female qualities that God is as Father-Mother (Being). The author says that this “dual essence” is “Will and Pleasure”. Pleasure being “the innermost power” and woman emerges while from Will, “the outer expression of the essence” comes man. I do not agree with the way he put this either. I believe that will and pleasure belong to the tree of knowledge of good and evil and has nothing to do with the tree of life.
“The twenty-two letters of the Hebrew language represent each of the male and female aspects of the Ten Sefirot plus two essences, Will and Pleasure. The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana represent these twenty-two letters and thus express the male and female sides of our nature. These twenty-two letters and the Sefira qualities that they represent are embedded within each human soul [again, there is no such thing as a human soul]. The Major Arcana are numbered from zero to twenty-one and these numbers reflect the duality of each of the Ten Sefirot, yielding an intricate portrait of human experience.”
And this is why he pairs up certain cards of the Major Arcana in his second chapter. I do not really agree with his interpretations throughout his chapter, but I find it an interesting read, and I do feel that the cards he pairs together do seem to be coordinated with each other. I will give you these matched cards, even though I will not go into any detail of their symbolism.
So, I am going to present my idea behind what these Cards represent before jumping into the Minor Arcana. As I said before, I believe that each Card presents meaning in regards to the Tree of Life. For example, THE FOOL has his head located in the Sphere of Kether, so even though he may look like he is a FOOL he is really thinking thoughts of the highest realm. His right hand is found near Geburah and his left hand is found in Chokmah. Both of his feet are above Malkuth, his right foot is in Yesod and his left foot, and the dog’s right front leg are on the Path of Mem. So he and his dog are rooted to THE HANGED MAN Card and the element of water (Science). I think that the dog represents THE FOOL’S dogma (teachings).
I am going to move on to Card II – THE HIGH PRIESTESS.
One thing I would like to tell you about THE HIGH PRISTESS is what Krafchow says, that the “forward-most pillar of each row is inscribed with a letter. Transcribed into Hebrew, the two letters, b (bet) and j (yud), have the numerical value of twelve. [These two pillars are supposed to be like the two pillars found in Solomon’s Temple.] The twelve pillars around the throne of The Priestess represent the zodiac.” Thus I have yet another reason to compare THE HIGH PRIESTESS to the woman God-crowned (Revelation 12) who has a crown of twelve stars (the zodiac is made up of twelve constellations [stars]).
Her feet are not seen, as they are clothed in her dress of flowing water (spiritual teachings of Science). This water flows into Card III, THE EMPRESS. Near where her feet would be is the crescent moon, the woman God-crowned stands upon the moon. The ornament on her head seems to represent a full moon as well as (sort of) two crescent moons, or possibly horns of some animal, like a bull (the Christ). However, it is also possible that the shape that may be taken as a full moon actually represents the hidden Sphere of Daat (intuitive knowing). Daat is often the invisible Sphere and this is why I give to it the number 11, as the other Sephiroth Spheres are numbered 1 to 10. It is located between Kether and Tiphareth.
The top pomegranate on the banner behind THE HIGH PRIESTESS is in the Sphere of Kether, where THE FOOL’s head was placed. The way that the pomegranate spheres have been placed on the banner depicts the Tree of Life. The pomegranate is a symbol for Venus, the goddess. Venus is also the planet that traverses the sun (is clothed with the sun) and yet is clothed with a cloud (a volcanic cloud of ash). This woman represents the Center Pillar of Mildness (equilibrium). The + symbol on her chest, which to me is a symbol for the city of our God, is found in the Sphere of Tiphareth (beauty, harmony). “In Tiphareth, God is made manifest in form, and dwells among us,” which means that this woman is prophecy of the Second Coming of Christ (which had already come to be by the time the Rider Deck was created, but the Golden Dawn did not realize this point).
The Paths that this woman is on are Path 13 – Gimel, Path 25 – Samech, and Path 32 – Tau. Gimel is for THE HIGH PRIESTESS Key Card and the (astrological symbol of the) Moon. Samech is for the TEMPERANCE Key Card and Sagittarius (the Archer), which is where the scroll of the Torah is found. Tau is for THE UNIVERSE Key Card and Saturn. (Note: Key Card is different from KEY Card. There is only one KEY card and that is the Ten of Pentacles.)
The Torah (teachings) consists of the first five books of the BIBLE, or rather “The Five Books of Moses, which relate the history of the earth from the creation of the first two human beings [Adam and Eve supposedly] until the death of Moses 2,500 years later. Torah is also used to describe the entirety of Jewish knowledge, both written and oral.” Adam and Eve supposedly lived in the First Day of Mind, so 2,500 years later would be the middle point of the Third Day of Soul; “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years.” Mary Baker Eddy uses this BIBLE passage on page 504 of SCIENCE AND HEALTH, in her chapter “Genesis” in explanation of Genesis 1:5 – with the end of the First Day.
Actually, the second creation of Adam man is a bogus creation or false creation. The real man is spoken of in the Sixth Day of Creation at the end of chapter 1 of Genesis.
“Inadequate theories of creation
“Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As mortals drop off their mental swaddling-clothes, thought expands into expression. ‘Let there be light,’ is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres. The mythical human theories of creation, anciently classified as the higher criticism, sprang from cultured scholars in Rome and in Greece, but they afforded no foundation for accurate views of creation by the divine Mind.
“Finite views of Deity
“Mortal man has made a covenant with his eyes to belittle Deity with human conceptions. In league with material sense, mortals take limited views of all things. That God is corporeal or material, no man should affirm.
“The human form, or physical finiteness, cannot be made the basis of any true idea of the infinite Godhead. Eye hath not seen Spirit, nor hath ear heard His voice.” (S&H 255:1-18)
What is interesting about the word TORAH is that the word TAROT is almost TORAH spelled backwards. If the first T of TAROT was an H it would spell HAROT, which is TAROH spelled backwards. This word play is depicted on The WHEEL of FORTUNE Card. The TORAH is held above Yesod, which has a firm foundation.
Moving on to Card III – THE EMPRESS, we see that she is, for sure, a depiction of the woman God-crowned. She too is Venus, the morning star that Jesus promised to his followers (Christians). She is supposed to be pregnant, and her dress is covered in pomegranates. Her crown has twelve stars on it. One of the center stars is the five-pointed star of Venus, the rest are six pointed stars – representing the Star of David. The Star of David is the union of two pyramid shapes, one points upward (called a blade) for the masculine Judah tribes while one points downward (called a cup) for the feminine Israel tribes. Her crown is in Kether and her Rod is held upon Path 12 – Beth for THE MAGICIAN Key Card and the Astrological Symbol of Mercury. Mercury is representative of the god Mercury that has feet similar to the angel of Revelation 10.
THE EMPRESS has her right elbow on Path 17 – Zain for THE LOVERS Key Card and Gemini (the twins) – for there are two woman God-crowned missions – one during the Sixth Day of Truth and one during the Seventh Day of Love. Her left hand is on Path 21 – Kaph for the WHEEL of FORTUNE Key Card and Jupiter. The WHEEL of FORTUNE depicts the four living creatures in the four corners (symbolic of the city of our God) of the Card, the four living creatures which is the divine infinite calculus of the Word (Lion with the Book of St. Matthew), the Christ (Ox or Bull with the Book of St. Mark), Christianity (Face of a Man with the Book of St. Luke), and Science (flying Eagle with the Book of St. John).
THE EMPRESS sits of the firm foundation of Yesod. She too sits on the same Paths as THE HIGH PRIESTESS but has only Path 13 and Path 25 assigned to her. So she is also associated with THE HIGH PRIESTESS and TEMPERANCE Key Cards. TEMPERANCE is of importance because it depicts the angel from Revelation 10.
THE EMPRESS “is the ‘word made flesh and dwelling amongst us.’”
The pillow with the symbol of Venus is located on Paths 31and 30. Path 31 is Qoph for THE MOON Key Card and Pisces. Path 30 is Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR Key Card and Aries. The woman God-crowned has dominion over the moon.
THE EMPEROR holds an ankh in his right hand. The ankh is symbolic of Venus. The ankh is on Path 18 – Cheth for THE CHARIOT and Cancer, Sphere 5 – Geburah (strength, severity), and Path 23 –Mem – for THE HANGED MAN as Water (Science). The four Rams (Aries) on THE EMPEROR’S throne. “The symbol of Aries is the horns of a ram. In Egyptian mythology Amon was united with the Sun God, and in his primitive function as a god of life and reproduction, he was represented as a ram-headed deity. Aries, the first fire sign, stands for the original cause or thunderbolt that emerged from the primordial waters.” This means that Aries, as lightning, is animal magnetism and the belief of Adam man being true creation.
“No material creation
“Progress takes off human shackles. The finite must yield to the infinite. Advancing to a higher plane of action, thought rises from the material sense to the spiritual, from the scholastic to the inspirational, and from the mortal to the immortal. All things are created spiritually. Mind, not matter, is the creator. Love, the divine Principle, is the Father [THE EMPEROR] and Mother [THE EMPRESS] of the universe, including man.
“The theory of three persons in one God (that is, a personal Trinity or Tri-unity) suggests polytheism, rather than the one ever-present I AM. ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord.’
“No divine corporeality
“The everlasting I Am is not bounded nor compressed within the narrow limits of physical humanity, nor can He be understood aright through mortal concepts. The precise form of God must be of small importance in comparison with the sublime question, What is infinite Mind or divine Love?
“Who is it that demands our obedience? He who, is the language of Scripture, ‘doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, What doest Thou?’
“No form nor physical combination is adequate to represent infinite Love. A finite and material sense of God leads to formalism and narrowness; it chills the spirit of Christianity.” (S&H 256:1-27)
I will now move on to Card XIV – TEMPERANCE and Card XVII – THE STAR. The reason for this is because they both depict the angel from Revelation 10, the angel that descended down from heaven (being a divine messenger of God) with a little book open, this book being SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, by Mary Baker Eddy (God’s Scribe-Angel). It is possible that both angels are feminine, we know for sure that the angel in THE STAR is a woman because she has no clothes on.
I feel that the angel with wings depicts Michael (Truth) while the naked woman depicts Gabriel (Love). Michael’s head is in Kether. The pyramid (masculine blade) on Michael’s chest sits upon Tiphareth (beauty, harmony). The Cups, symbols for Science, keep the water (spiritual teachings) from being spread out into the world. They are contained mostly for the Church followers – the Christ Scientists. While in THE STAR the spiritual teachings are being poured out into the sea (unconscious error) and the earth (conscious error). The water being poured into the sea causes ripples that resemble an EDDY. While the water being poured out upon the earth makes five little streams that I believe nullify the five material senses.
Michael’s right hand holds a cup on Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL Key Card and Capricorn. THE DEVIL Card depicts Adam and Eve, the second creation in Genesis. The angel’s book handles this false narrative in chapter 15 – “Genesis”. The left hand holds a cup located in Sphere 4 – Chesed (mercy, majesty) for THE EMPEROR – “He has become master of the world of abstract (difficult to understand) ideas and can select images to fit his purpose and bring them down into the concrete plane of Malkuth.” Mary Baker Eddy explains these abstract ideas quite clearly in SCIENCE AND HEALTH. The symbol on Michael’s forehead is the symbol of the sun. The sun being the Light of Mind.
The crown is found in Hod (splendor, form, intelligence). “Hod is the sphere of Mercury-Hermes, the god of science and books, who works in the mental realm in a scientific manner; Hod is the scientist in us”. The mountain seen in THE STAR is also in Hod. The Iris flowers on the right side of the card tell us that this angel is the goddess of the rainbow, as spoken of in Revelation 10. The top Iris is located on top of Netzach (victory, force, Venus-Aphrodite) and on Path 21 – Kaph (WHEEL of FORTUNE). The lower Iris is on Path 28 – Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR.
Michael’s left foot, in the sea, has the tip of her toes in Malkuth and on Path 32 (Tau for THE UNIVERSE Key Card and Saturn) while the right foot, on the earth, rests her heel on Path 29 (Qoph for THE MOON and Pisces).
Yellow is the color I use for Soul. This Soul is God, the divine Soul that you and I reflect. The Yellow Star is located in Kether and is on Path 13 – Gimel – for THE HIGH PRIESTESS. So this Yellow Star, I feel, represents the woman God-crowned.
Is THE STAR the Yellow Star (with eight points) or is THE STAR the female angel (divine messenger) of Love? I feel that it is both the Yellow Star and the Woman messenger (Gabriel). Beside the Major Yellow Star (which I feel also represents the Holy City) there are seven more Minor White Stars (also with eight points each). White is representative of all seven colors – so it is a blending or union of the seven synonymous terms for God – Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. I believe that these seven Minor White Stars represent the Seven Days with the circling Stars being the Six Days of Creation and the one Star above the mountains representing the Seventh Day of Love – the Sabbath – when the STARGATE MATRIX is opened. For Gabriel has made the distinction between the seven Stars. She understands that Genesis 1 speaks only about the Six Days, which are actual days of creation, while the Seventh Day alone is found at the beginning of the second chapter of Genesis, before the false creation of Adam begins.
The bird, a sacred ibis, in the tree is located in Chesed. An ibis is symbolic of a messenger (angel) of God. This messenger comes in the Seventh Day of Love. The left middle White Star is located in Binah while the right middle White Star is located in Chokmah. This angel’s head is on Path 22 – Lamed for the JUSTICE Key Card and Libra, so she is pouring out Justice in equal portions. She is mentally balanced. Her right hand holds a pitcher in Hod (sphere of Mercury-Hermes, the god of science and books) while her left hand holds the pitcher on Path 21 – Kaph for the WHEEL of FORTUNE (the STARGATE MATRIX itself when seen as WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK).
Her right thigh follows Path 27 (Peh for THE TOWER Key Card (there must be no material organization) and Mars – god of war) and Path 25 (Samech for TEMPERANCE (Michael, the leader of the war between the spirit and the flesh – Truth) and Sagitarius, the Archer) while her foot rests upon Yesod (storehouse of images, the foundation). Her left knee is on Path 28 –Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR. Her left arm follows Path 24 – Nun for the DEATH Key Card (the only thing that ever dies is the false belief that life, consists with Mind, Spirit, and Soul being held captive in a material body or that life exists in matter) and Scorpio (the fourth living creature of Science).
“A limitless Mind cannot proceed from physical limitations. Finiteness cannot present the idea or the vastness of infinity. A mind originating from a finite or material source must be limited and finite. Infinite Mind is the creator, and creation is the infinite image or idea emanating from this Mind. If Mind is within and without all things, then all is Mind; and this definition is scientific.
“Matter is not substance
“If matter, so-called, is substance, then Spirit, matter’s unlikeness, must be shadow; and shadow cannot produce substance. The theory that Spirit is not the only substance and creator is pantheistic heterodoxy, which ultimates in sickness, sin, and death; it is the belief in a bodily soul and a material mind, a soul governed by the body and a mind in matter. This belief is shallow pantheism.
“Mind creates His own likeness in ideas, and the substance of an idea is very far from being the supposed substance of non-intelligent matter. Hence the Father Mind is not the father of matter. The material senses and human conceptions would translate spiritual ideas into material beliefs, and would say that an anthropomorphic God, instead of infinite Principle, — in other words, divine Love, — is the father of the rain, ‘who hath begotten the drops of des,’ who bringeth ‘forth Mazzaroth in his season,’ and guideth ‘Arcturus with his sons.’
“Inexhaustible divine Love
“Finite mind manifests all sorts of errors, and thus proves the material theory of mind in matter to be the antipode of Mind. Who hath found finite life or love sufficient to meet the demands of human want and woe, — to still the desires, to satisfy the aspirations? Infinite Mind cannot be limited to a finite form, or Mind would lose its infinite character as inexhaustible Love, eternal Life, omnipotent Truth.” (S&H 256:28-257:29)
Two other cards that I pair are I – THE MAGICIAN and VIII – STRENGTH because they both have the “symbol of the cosmic lemniscate – a symbol of eternal life and dominion, indicating the harmonious interaction of the conscious and subconscious, idea and feeling, desire and emotion.” It looks like the figure 8 on its side and it also is a symbol for infinity. I feel that these two cards represent the masculine and feminine Comings of Christ as Jesus (Christian Science) and Mary Baker Eddy (absolute Christian Science).
The cosmic lemniscate is in Kether on Card I, while it is located in Binah on Card VIII. Binah represents the feminine. The wand (for the Word of God) in THE MAGICIAN’S right hand is also located in Binah.
“Infinite physique impossible
“It would require an infinite form to contain infinite Mind. Indeed, the phrase infinite form involves a contradiction of terms. Finite man cannot be the image and likeness of the infinite God. A mortal, corporeal, finite conception of God cannot embrace the glories of limitless, incorporeal Life and Love. Hence the unsatisfied human craving for something better, higher, holier, than is afforded by material belief in a physical God and man. The insufficiency of this belief to supply the true idea proves the falsity of material belief.
“Man is more than a material form with a mind inside which must escape from its environments in order to be immortal. Man reflects infinity and this reflection is the true idea of God.
“God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis. Mind manifests all that exists in the infinitude of Truth. We know no more of man as the true divine image and likeness, than we know of God.
“The infinite Principle is reflected by the infinite idea and spiritual individuality, but the material so-called senses have no cognizance of either Principle or its idea. The human capacities are enlarged and perfected in proportion as humanity gains the true conception of man and God.” (S&H 257:20-258:24)
THE MAGICIAN’S right arm is on Path 17 – Zain for THE LOVERS Key Card and Gemini (two Christ advents), while his left arm is on Path 24 – Nun for the DEATH Key Card and Scorpio (Science). THE MAGICIAN Key Card is saying, “As in heaven so on Earth, God is omnipotent supreme.” His belt is symbolic of the zodiac, where the serpent is biting its own tail.
On the foursquare matrix table are the four symbols for the divine infinite calculus, the wand or staff (the Word), the Pentacle (the Christ), the sword (Christianity), and the cup (Science). It is interesting that, like on the wheel of WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK, the cup of Science is in the center hub. And the Word, Christ, and Christianity surround Science.
The red roses are symbolic of the Virgin Mary (Motherhood), but also of Venus, the morning star; while the white lilies symbolize Mary Magdalene, or the Lamb’s bride. Gray says that lilies are symbols of “Abstract thought untinged by desire”. THE MAGICIAN’S clothes match the flowers, a white undergarment and a red mantel.
STRENGTH depicts the woman holding the lion’s mouth open, thus she has strength, or power, over the Word of God. Her shoulder is in Tiphareth, her head (consciousness) is on Path 17 – Zain; so she is in sink with THE MAGICIAN in her mission. Her hands and the lion’s mouth are on Path 26 – Ayin – for THE DEVIL Key Card and Capricorn. This simply means that she has power over material creation (Adam and Eve). The woman is clothed in white, like THE MAGICIAN counterpart, but she has a belt of flowers around her waste that flow down to the lion’s main.
The mountain peak supports Hod (splendor, form, intelligence). Again, Hod has to do with Mercury-Hermes, the god of science and books. To me this mountain represents the Major Pyramid Matrix of Truth.
The Lion’s rear end is located in Netzach (victory, force, Venus-Aphrodite). While Hod is the scientist (or the Christian Scientist) Netzach is the artist (or the Christian Science Practitioner – healer). So, not only is the Word represented by the lion’s mouth (audible Word) but also by its rear (raising consciousness into constructive ways that heal mankind). I might even go so far as to say that the head of the lion is SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES while its rear end is Christ and Christmas. The lion’s tail is on Path 29 – Qoph for THE MOON Key Card and Pieces (the two Christ fish).
In the BIBLE (and TORAH) the lion is symbolic of Israel’s fourth son – Judah. Jesus Christ is supposed to be descended from this tribe, via King David.
Since we have mentioned both of these two cards (seen directly above) let us compare the two. I feel that THE LOVERS Key Card depicts spiritual man and spiritual woman as Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy. Jesus Christ’s God-crowned mission was the Word of God (depicted by the flames on the tree of life), while Mary Baker Eddy’s God-crowned mission was to handle the serpent (depicted by the forbidden fruit and serpent coiled around the tree of knowledge of good and evil). One is the Column of Severity while the other is the Column of Mercy. The man, Jesus (Christian Science), looks to the woman (absolute Christian Science), while the woman looks to the angle (divine messenger) of the Word (Raphael) – depicted by the hair being flames of fire. Yet, Raphael is an angel of Air (Christianity). Raphael’s consciousness is located in the God-crowned consciousness of Kether. The mountaintop is in the Sphere of Yesod (foundation). Again, I feel like this mountain represents the Major Pyramid Matrix of Truth.
THE DEVIL Key Card depicts physical man, symbolized by the horns seen on the woman and man’s head. Again, they represent the forbidden fruit of physical knowledge and the tree of life (via the Word of God) – as seen by the tails on the woman and man. God’s spiritual messenger has been replaced by the opposite – THE DEVIL, with the inverted morning star – for Lucifer. This DEVIL has the horns of the Ram (Aries) – that which believes in primitive (material animalistic) life and reproduction via sexual activity. This DEVIL is passing himself off as being religious – for his right hand presents the same symbols that Jewish priests use – a symbol for God. Yet Eden Gray thinks that this hand is a symbol for black magic. In the left hand is a torch of fire pointing downward, almost touching the man’s tail of flame. The flame of the torch is located in Netzach. In this case it represents the war between the male and female as Mars and Venus – two differing types of thought mode that are forever combating one another. This Key Card depicts the belief that men and women must continue having children via sex.
“Mortals have a very imperfect sense of the spiritual man and of the infinite range of his thought. To him belongs eternal Life. Never born and never dying, it were impossible for man, under the government of God in eternal Science, to fall from his high estate.
“God’s man discerned
“Through spiritual sense you can discern the heart of divinity, and thus begin to comprehend in Science the generic term man. Man is not absorbed in Deity, and man cannot lose his individuality, for he reflects eternal Life; nor is he an isolated, solitary idea, for he represents infinite Mind, the sum of all substance.
“In divine Science, man is the true image of God. The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow, — thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying. The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, — perfect God and perfect man, — as the basis of thought and demonstration.
“The divine image not lost
“If man was once perfect but has now lost his perfection, then mortals have never beheld in man the reflex image of God. The lost image is no image. The true likeness cannot be lost in divine reflection. Understanding this, Jesus said: ‘Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.’
“Mortal thought transmits its own images, and forms its offspring after human illusions. God, Spirit, works spiritually, not materially. Brain [Adam] or matter never formed a human concept. Vibration [sex] is not intelligence; hence it is not a creator. Immortal ideas, pure, perfect, and enduring, are transmitted by the divine Mind through divine Science, which corrects error with truth and demands spiritual thoughts, divine concepts, to the end that they may produce harmonious results.
“Deducing one’s conclusions as to man from imperfection instead of perfection, one can no more arrive at the true conception or understanding of man, and make himself like it, than the sculptor can perfect his outlines from an imperfect model, or the painter can depict the form and face of Jesus, while holding in thought the character of Judas.
“The conceptions of mortal, erring thought must give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal. Through many generations human beliefs will be attaining diviner conceptions, and the immortal and perfect model of God’s creation will finally be seen as the only true conception of being.
“Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done; but distrust of one’s ability to gain the goodness desired and to bring out better and higher results, often hampers the trial of one’s wings and ensures failure at the outset.
“Requisite change of our ideals
“Mortals must change their ideals in order to improve their models. A sick body is evolved from sick thoughts. Sickness, disease, and death proceed from fear. Sensualism evolves bad physical and moral conditions.
“Selfishness and sensualism are educated in mortal mind by the thoughts ever recurring to one’s self, by conversation about the body, and by the expectation of perpetual pleasure or pain from it; and this education is at the expense of spiritual growth. If we array thought in mortal vestures, it must lose its immortal nature. ” (S&H 258:25-260:30)
THE HERMIT is the center Pillar of Truth. His right hand holds the star of David in Binah (Womanhood) – for it is the woman God-crowned who is the Star of David (Bethlehem and/or Boston). THE HERMIT’S left hand holds the Wand (Rod) symbol for the Word of God. His conscious thought is in Kether. Those who are true Leaders of the world are hermits (they are alone). The word hermit could be split up as “her mit[t]” or “her glove” – in recognition of Mary Baker GLOVER Eddy.
THE TOWER is also placed on the center Pillar of Truth (Mildness or Balance). Yet, a bolt of lightning (which makes the letter W – for Womanhood) blows the Tower’s Crown of Kether clean off the roof. This is a fire card (for the Word). Two people are falling from the Tower of Babel. There are twelve Yods (drops of light – the hands of man) on the left side of the Card and ten Yods on the right side of the Card. Twelve and ten make twenty-two – the same number of Key Cards for the Major Arcana.
So the Star of David symbolizes divine Light while the twenty-two Yods symbolize what is made by man’s hand. Even thought the Tower is built from rock (has a firm foundation), like The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts was built, if it bases its faith and religion on human intellect and disobeys God-s By-Laws, then it cannot stand as a Church. And those who are members of said Church will fall down into the material world. The person on the left has his head in or near Hod (the scientist). The person on the right has his head in or near Netzach (the artist). Since they are falling, they seem to form the downward triangle of manifestation and personality. What I feel that this means, once interpreted, is that those in charge (the hierarchy) of The Mother Church (Boston) are afraid to claim that Mary Baker Eddy as the Second Coming of Christ’s manifestation in the flesh because they firmly believe it leads to personality worship (personal sense). When the opposite is true. They must accept Mary Baker Eddy as the Second Coming of Christ and stop seeing her as a little gray-haired old lady of flesh! They must turn away from the material organization – or the Church Body.
“Unreality of pain
“The effect of mortal mind on health and happiness is seen in this: If one turns away from the body with such absorbed interest as to forget it, the body experiences no pain. Under the strong impulse of a desire to perform his part, a noted actor was accustomed night after night to go upon the stage and sustain his appointed task, walking about as actively as the youngest member of the company. This old man was so lame that he hobbled every day to the theatre, and sat aching in his chair till his cue was spoken—a signal which made him as oblivious of physical infirmity as if he had inhaled chloroform, though he was in the full possession of his so-called senses.
“Immutable identity of man
“Detach sense from the body, or matter, which is only a form of human belief, and you may learn the meaning of God, or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal. Breaking away from the mutations of time and sense, you will neither lose the solid objects and ends of life nor your own identity. Fixing your gaze on the realities supernal, you will rise to the spiritual consciousness of being, even as the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight.
“Forgetfulness of self
“We should forget our bodies in remembering good and the human race. Good demands of man every hour, in which to work out the problem of being. Consecration to good does not lessen man’s dependence on God, but heightens it. Neither does consecration diminish man’s obligations to God, but shows the paramount necessity of meeting them. Christian Science takes naught from the perfection of God, but it ascribes to Him the entire glory. By putting ‘off the old man with his deeds,’ mortals ‘put on immortality.’
“We cannot fathom the nature and quality of God’s creation by diving into the shallows of mortal belief. We must reverse our feeble flutterings—our efforts to find life and truth in matter—and rise above the testimony of the material senses, above the mortal to the immortal idea of God. These clearer, higher views inspire the God-like man to reach the absolute centre and circumference of his being.
“The true sense
“Job said: ‘I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth Thee.’ Mortals will echo Job’s thought, when the supposed pain and pleasure of matter cease to predominate. They will then drop the false estimate of life and happiness, of joy and sorrow, and attain the bliss of loving unselfishly, working patiently, and conquering all that is unlike God. Starting from a higher standpoint, one rises spontaneously, even as light emits light without effort; for ‘where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’
“Mind the only cause
“The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man’s origin. To begin rightly is to end rightly. Every concept which seems to begin with the brain begins falsely. Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence. Cause does not exist in matter, in mortal mind, or in physical forms.”(S&H 261:21-262:32)
Both of these cards have pillars representing the Pillar of Severity and the Pillar of Mercy. Both heads are in the Sphere of Daat (knowing), while the crown of the Pope is in Kether. JUSTICE is foursquare in his/her thinking (as depicted on the crown) and in his/her heart (as depicted by the pin on the chest – located in Tiphareth. JUSTICE has the sword of Christianity in his (or her) right hand located in Geburah (strength, severity) and the scales of justice in the left hand on Path 21 – Kaph for the WHEEL of FORTUNE. These scales are near the Sphere of Netzach (the artist). The toes (of JUSTICE’S right foot) are in a white shoe and on Path 31 – Shin – JUDGMENT Itself (with the element of Fire – the Word). Both of THE HIEROPHANT’S feet (toes) are visible and located on Path 25 – Samech – TEMPERANCE and Sagittarius. Both are clothed in red (either they are one with divine Mind or they are listening to mortal mind) while THE HIEROPHANT has white (Principled) accents with crosses on one band (on Path 13 – Gimel – THE HIGH PRIESTESS and Moon and Path 25 – Samech – TEMPERANCE and Sagittarius.). JUSTICE has green (Principled in the Word) accents.
The Pope’s right hand depicts a sign (symbol) that could be the letter H (in sign language). I believe it could be a sign that Catholic statues of Jesus have him making, and I do not know what this would mean. If this is so, it could mean that the Pope believes himself to be a “personal” successor of Jesus (a man). In his left hand is the papal cross in Chokmah and on path 16 – Vav – for THE HEIROPHANT and Taurus (the Christ Bull). Again, the material Pope claims to be Christ Jesus, when he is not. Below his feet are two crossed keys – supposed to be the keys to heaven. However, these keys are in Malkuth (which represents the entire physical world), so they are not the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Also we see the red roses and white lilies on the two monks (servants to the Pope) – symbols of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene (the High Tower).
The Roman Catholic Church is not Christ’s true Church. It was not built upon the Christ Rock; Peter had nothing to do with the Roman Catholic Church either. Paul was in Rome not Peter. Even though THE HIEROPHANT Key Card understands the importance of Womanhood’s two missions as Mother and Bride it is unwilling to acknowledge it.
“Mortals are egotists. They believe themselves to be independent workers, personal authors, and even privileged originators of something which Deity would not or could not create. The creations of mortal mind are material. Immortal spiriutal man alone represents the truth of creation.
“Material man a mis-creator
“When mortal man blends his thoughts of existence with the spiritual and works only as God works, he will no longer grope in the dark and cling to earth because he has not tasted heaven. Carnal beliefs defraud us. They make man an involuntary hypocrite, — producing evil when he would create good, forming deformity when he would outline grace and beauty, injuring those whom he would bless. He becomes a general mis-creator, who believes he is a semi-god. His ‘touch turns hope to dust, the dust we all have trod.’ He might say in Bible language: ‘The good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.’
“The multiplication of a human and mortal sense of persons and things is not creation. A sensual thought, like an atom of dust thrown into the face of spiritual immensity, is dense blindness instead of a scientific eternal consciousness of creation.” (S&H 263:1-31)
I have spoken about THE EMPEROR before this, so I will sort of move on to THE CHARIOT. But before I do, notice the rectangle shape in similarity with the throne and the chariot. Once more, there is they symbol of the foursquare city on the chest of man. There are also palm leaves of salvation, and below this is the secondary science of astrology and its belt. The crown (in Kether) has the eight-pointed STAR we see on THE STAR Key Card (also a symbol of dominion – as the man/woman spoken of in Genesis 1 has dominion over the earth). So I believe that the charioteer is ruled by the Woman’s Scientific teachings. His wand (of Will) is in his right hand and is similar to the ankh in THE EMPEROR’S hand. They are both on the same Path, in the same position.
The two female sphinxes are negative and positive or feminine and masculine. They seem to be pulling in opposite directions, and if the charioteer allows them to have their way then he will not get anywhere on his journey.
“Mind’s true camera
“The fading forms of matter, the mortal body and material earth, are the fleeting concepts of the human mind. They have their day before the permanent facts and their perfection in Spirit appear. The crude creations of mortal thought must finally give place to the glorious forms which we sometimes behold in the camera of divine Mind, when the mental picture is spiritual and eternal. Mortals must look beyond fading finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things. Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind? We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being.
“As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were invisible, will become visible. When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness.” (S&H 263:32-264:19)
THE SUN presents us with the yellow Sun and the naked Son. The Son is depicted in JUDGEMENT. THE SUN is a Fire Card (for the Word of God) with all of the sunflowers (Jerusalem artichokes). The sunflower on the right side is the Sphere of Netzach (the artist). The boy’s head is on Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL and Capricorn. The Sun itself takes up the upper (spiritual) portion of the tree of life. The horse’s head is on Path 29 – Qoph – for THE MOON and Pieces, Path 28 – for Tzaddi – THE EMPEROR and Aries, and Path 25 – Samech for TEMPERANCE and Sagittarius. The Sun’s private area is in Malkuth (the physical world). His right arm passes through Path 31 – Shin for JUDGEMENT and Fire (Word), Path 30 – Resh for THE SUN and the Sun, and Path 27 – Peh for THE TOWER and Mars.
JUDGEMENT has the Sun’s head in Yesod (foundation) – he is trying to rise above the physical world. His arms represent Path 30 – Resh – THE SUN, and Path 28 – Tzaddi – THE EMPEROR (and Aries). The woman’s arms represent Path 27 – Peh – THE TOWER (Mars) and her head is Sphere Netzach (artist) while the man’s head is Sphere Hod (scientist). Gabriel’s head is in Kether. The flag of Salvation is on Path 19 – Teth for STRENGTH and Leo, Path 22 – Lamed for JUSTICE and Libra, and Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL and Capricorn.
“Spiritual proofs of existence
“Spirit and its formations are the only realities of being. Matter disappears under the microscope of Spirit. Sin is unsustained by Truth, and sickness and death were overcome by Jesus, who proved them to be forms of error. Spiritual living and blessedness are the only evidences, by which we can recognize true existence and feel the unspeakable peace which comes from an all-absorbing spiritual love.
“When we learn the way in Christian Science and recognize man’s spiritual being, we shall behold and understand God’s creation, — all the glories of earth and heaven and man.
“The universe of Spirit is people with spiritual beings, and its government is divine Science. Man is the offspring, not of the lowest, but of the highest qualities of Mind. Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged. Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual, — they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite, — in order that sin and mortality may be put off.
“This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man’s absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace.” (S&H 264:20-265:15)
DEATH has the same two towers in its background that we see in the middle ground of THE MOON. Yet, we do not see a kingdom in THE MOON Key Card. Instead we see the Path that may lead us to TEMPERANCE. DEATH’S head is in Binah and the banner is a white rose. This rose has five petals – they are for the five senses that must be spiritually translated by the five elements of the Word, the Christ, Christianity, Science, and Principle, Love. The rose is also a symbol for secrecy. Much water (Science) is depicted in this Key Card. The Pope or Priest, even though he is standing, is subservient to DEATH.
The horse’s head is on Path 20 – Yod “representing the descent of the Life-force from above into material existence” for THE HERMIT and Virgo. Its front left leg is below Malkuth but follows Path 32 – Tau for THE UNIVERSE and Saturn, Path 28 – Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR and Aries, and Path 25 – Samech for TEMPERANCE and Sagittarius.
The banner and MOON are close to the same position. THE MOON may be presenting a lunar eclipse. Below THE MOON are fifteen Yods – “representing the descent of the Life-force from above into material existence.”
The scorpion (for Science) is in the same place as the horse’s left leg. It will follow the Path of TEMPERANCE (LOVE).
“Mortal birth and death
“The senses represent birth as untimely and death as irresistible, as if man were a weed growing apace or a flower withered by the sun and nipped by untimely frosts; but this is true only of a mortal, not of a man in God’s image and likeness. The truth of being is perennial, and the error is unreal and obsolete.
“Blessings from pain
“Who that has felt the loss of human peace has not gained stronger desires for spiritual joy? The aspiration after heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love. The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the ascending path of many a heart. The pains of sense quickly inform us that the pleasures of sense are mortal and that joy is spiritual.
“Decapitation of error
“The pains of sense are salutary, if they wrench away false pleasurable beliefs and transplant the affections from sense to Soul, where the creations of God are good, ‘rejoicing the heart.’ Such is the sword of Science, with which Truth decapitates error, materiality giving place to man’s higher individuality and destiny.” (S&H 265:16-266:5)
I also pair up Card X – WHEEL of FORTUNE and Card XXI – THE WORLD. My main reason for this is because they both depict the four living creatures spoken of in Ezekiel (chapter 1 with Ezekiel’s wheel) and Revelation. I believe the four living creatures, located in the four corners of the cards, represent the four Gospels of the BIBLE’S New Testament on Card X. However, they are presented in a clockwise order beginning at the bottom right hand corner – Lion (the Word) then Ox or Bull (the Christ), then Face of a Man ([an angel of] Christianity), and finally a flying eagle [Science]. If you have read my posts then you know I begin in the upper right hand corner of the WHEEL and move counterclockwise (like Venus).
Card X has the four Hebrew letters for spelling out the name of Jehovah in the four corners of the Wheel, then as the four cardinal points we have the Roman letters of T, O, R, and A – which can spell TORA[H], ROTA (for rotate), and TAROT. In an inner circle of the WHEEL are the four element signs of fire (the Word), earth (the Christ), air (Christianity), and water (Science).
Outside of the WHEEL are three creatures. One is a sphinx-lion (the Word) holding a sword of Christianity and Science – or Christian Science. Gray tells us that the descending serpent is Typhon “the Egyptian god of evil…also used to represent the Life-force on its descent into manifestation” and the ascending jackal “a symbol of intelligence ever aspiring to ascend” is Hermes-Anubis (god of death). The jackal-head tries to ascend through the Three Degrees of mortal mind (death), that Mary Baker Eddy explains on pages 115-116 of SCIENCE AND HEALTH.
The head of the sphinx is in Kether and it sits upon Tiphareth (beauty, harmony). This Sphere has to do with the Son of God (the Holy Trinity). Its body is on Path 13 – Gimel for THE HIGH PRIESTESS Key Card and the Moon. Hermes-Anubis’s head is on Path 21 – Kaph for the WHEEL of FORTUNE Key Card and Jupiter. While the serpents head is in Hod and it is on Path 23 – Mem for THE HANGED MAN Key Card and Water (Science).
THE WORLD Key Card is sometimes called THE UNIVERSE. In the Rider Deck it is THE WORLD. Again, the four living creatures, which nullify the powers of the four zodiac constellations of Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio, are located in the four corners of the card – thus representing the squared-cycle of the Word. It is interesting that all the clouds are grey (the Second Degree) for the first three living creatures, but the highest one is surrounded with a white cloud (the Third Degree)
The oval wreath represents the Pillar of Severity and the Pillar of Mildness connected, or working together in unity. In the woman’s hands are two rods – the BIBLE (in her right hand) and SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES (in her left hand).
The purple veil hides the woman’s sexual organs, so she represents generic man. Generic man is male/female – one. Her head is on Path 13 – Gimel (THE HIGH PRIESTESS). The lower left leg is on Path 28 – Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR Key Card and Aries. Her right foot is in Yesod (the Holy Ghost). Her right arm is on Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL Key Card and Capricorn and her left arm is on Path 24 – Nun for the DEATH Key Card and Scorpio (in Science the only death that exists is death to all belief based upon illusion).
“Uses of adversity
“Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for ‘man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.’ The author has experienced the foregoing prophecy and its blessings. Thus He teaches mortals to lay down their fleshliness and gain spirituality. This is done through self-abnegation. Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science.
“The sinner makes his own hell by doing evil, and the saint his own heaven by doing right. The opposite persecutions of material sense, aiding evil with evil, would deceive the very elect.
“Mortals must follow Jesus’ sayings and his demonstrations, which dominate the flesh. Perfect and infinite Mind enthroned is heaven. The evil beliefs which originate in mortals are hell. Man is the idea of Spirit; he reflects the beatific presence, illuming the universe with light. Man is deathless, spiritual. He is above sin or frailty. He does not cross the barriers of time into the vast forever of Life, but he coexists with God and the universe.
“The infinitude of God
“Every object in material thought will be destroyed, but the spiritual idea, whose substance is in Mind, is eternal. The offspring of God start not from matter or ephemeral dust. They are in and of Spirit, divine Mind, and so forever continue. God is one. The allness of Deity is His oneness. Generically man is one, and specifically man means all men.
“It is generally conceded that God is Father, eternal, self-created, infinite. If this is so, the forever Father must have had children prior to Adam. The great I AM made all ‘that was made.’ Hence man and the spiritual universe coexist with God.
“Christian Scientists understand that, in a religious sense, they have the same authority for the appellative mother, as for that of brother and sister. Jesus said; ‘For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.’” (S&H 266:6-267:18)
Again, I have already spoken of THE FOOL so I will focus on THE HANGED MAN. He is not hung by his neck, but by his foot (a symbol of spiritual understanding). This right foot is located in Kether. His leg is the Path of THE HIGH PRIESTESS. The lower portion of his left leg (I think) is on Path 19 – Teth for STRENGTH and Leo, while his belt is on Path 27 – Peh for THE TOWER and Mars. His head is in Yesod (foundation). His upper arms represent Path 28 – Tzaddi for THE EMPEROR and Aries and Path 30 – Resh for THE SUN while his lower arms represent Path 24 – Nun for DEATH and Scorpio and Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL and Capricorn.
“Waymarks to eternal Truth
“When examined in the light of divine Science, mortals present more than is detected upon the surface, since inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs must be counterfeits of Truth. Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth. The probes of Spirit are ‘white and glistering,’ like the raiment of Christ. Even in this world, therefore, ‘let thy garments be always white.’ ‘Blessed is the man that endureth [overcometh] temptation: for when he is tried, [proved faithful], he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.’ (James i.12.)” (S&H 267:19-32; [Mary Baker Eddy’s interpolations.])
THE FIFTY-SIX CARDS OF THE MINOR ARCANA
Anyone who has played cards can see that the Minor Arcana resembles today’s modern deck of cards. There are four suits with each suit consisting of number cards 2-10, and the royal cards of Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. In the Tarot the royal cards are five in number – with the Page, Knight, Queen, King, and Ace. Supposedly the number cards represent nine parts of the body while the five royal cards represent five parts of the soul. Again, man has no soul, man only reflects Soul (God). All the ACE cards have one Wand, or one Pentacle, etc. While the II Cards would have two Wands, etc. Again, the four suits are made up of Wands for the element of Fire (the Word), Pentacles for the element of Earth (the Christ), Swords for the element of Air (Christianity), and Cups for the element of Water (Science) – for the divine infinite calculus. They also relate to four zodiac symbols of Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio.
There are books that explain what the authors feel each card symbolizes, and they are interesting reads, however, with the Rider Deck we must always keep in mind what the Tree of Life Matrix is telling us in regard to the card itself. For example, one of my favorite cards is the IX of Pentacles.
This Card depicts a woman (she is the center column of Mildness or Harmony). Krafchow says this is a man, but I disagree because the person has earrings on both ears. To me she represents, Mary Baker Eddy, for her left hand has a falcon glove on it, Mary’s first husband’s sir name was Glover, and Glover points to the glove while the hawk points us to Science. The face of the woman also reminds me of my own mother (the way her head is tilted resembles an old photograph of my mom taken in the 50s). Her gown is covered in a flower print. Her right hand rests near Hod (“which is passive and female in that it brings the force from the right Pillar into form.” Again, this Sphere has to do with Mercury-Hermes – the god of science and books. While this right hand is near Hod it is on Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL Key Card and Capricorn. The Pentacle Coins underneath her hand sort of resemble the middle portion of the Tree of Life, where the top Pentacle Coin would be Daat (knowing). I believe that her hand being on Ayin means that she has dominion (right hand is the dominant hand for most people) over d-evil one. She is the one to expose THE DEVIL for what it is – erring mortal mind, having no power at all. For she is the woman who unmasks animal magnetism.
The tree on the left is in Binah (Understanding, the Throne – the “great Mother of the Universe”). Binah is the third Supernal. The tree on the right is in Chokmah (Wisdom, the crown of Creation, the second Supernal). “It is between Chockmah, primordial maleness, and Binah, the primordial femaleness, [where the woman’s head is positioned] that the web of life is woven [Glovered].” The woman’s head is on Path 13 – Gimel for THE HIGH PRIESTESS Key Card and the Moon. Thus, this woman is the woman God-crowned.
The building of the “kingdom” on the right is in Chesed (mercy, majesty). The gloved hand is on Path 20 – Yod for THE HERMIT Key Card and Virgo. Virgo is the only feminine zodiac. Virgo is an earth (Christ) sign. “The Hermit who is seeking Truth on the mountaintop is a Virgo character. Perhaps he is not only seeking Truth for himself but also helping those below find it, as he holds his lantern aloft.” THE HERMIT Key Card holds a lantern with a Star of David inside.
This Star of David is found in Binah. It represents male and female as one – Judah (the blade) and Israel (the cup). The head of THE HERMIT is in Kether. He holds a staff for the Word of God that also represents the Pillar of Mildness and/or Harmony.
The hawk is on Path 15 – Heh for THE STAR and Aquarius (Christianity). The woman is in a grapevine symbolic of the Christian Church, or the Vine of Christ. However, since this Card has to do with Pentacles, the symbol of the second element – the Earth – then these grapes represent that aspect of the Tarot. Of course, I have told you that the Pentacle Coins represent the Christ nature – the Ox or Bull (Taurus). And the BIBLE spiritually translates this zodiac (animal nature) back to God in that it becomes a symbol for the Christ. I feel that the woman’s red hat represents divine Mind.
Another Card I am fond of is the QUEEN of WANDS. This is because it reminds me of the same similar symbols I used in my 1982 wall mural, which I painted about six months before I would have happened to see this card (if I even noticed it then).
My Queen stands upon a rock (throne) in between two lions. In front of her is a black panther. The Card has a much smaller black cat in front of the woman and does not have real lions at her side, yet, the lions are not only on each side of her but they are also on the banner behind the QUEEN of WANDS. Remember, the lion is the first living creature for the Word. The sunflowers are also of importance. This Card, for sure, has to do with the element Fire. But we must translate that back to the Word of God. The sunflower has come to mean much more to me because it represents New Jerusalem, what I call the New Jerusalem Artichoke Matrix, which is based upon the fourteenth chapter “Recapitulation” of SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, by Mary Baker Eddy.
The very tip of the top of the Queen’s head, and for sure her crown, is in Kether (the Crown). Kether is also the first Supernal (“being or coming from on high; heavenly” – Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary). So, there are three Supernal Spheres on the Tree of Life – Kether, Chokmah, and Binah. Would they represent three Christ advents? If they represent the Holy Trinity then they stand for Life (Binah), Truth (Kether), and Love (Chokmah).
Kether is both the manifestation of the masculine and feminine and presents equilibrium. Part of the sunflower in the queen’s left hand is in Netzach (victory, force, Venus-Aphrodite – the Sphere of the artist). Her right hand is on Path 26 – Ayin for THE DEVIL Key Card and Capricorn (again having the same meaning as the IX of Pentacles Card. Where her mantle is pinned together is in Tiphareth (beauty, harmony). This is where God is made manifest – which points to the Christ. Both throne lions face Hod (splendor, form, intelligence) and Netzach. The black cat is on the left side and partially in Malkuth.
The QUEEN’S throne is foursquare.
When I first began studying the Tarot I thought that cups and water were for Christianity and that swords and air were for Science. I have learned that it is the other way; that cups and water are for Science and swords and air are for Christianity. I also had a hard time understanding why the “water” bearer, Aquarius, would be an air sign instead of a water sign. I now see that the reason for this is because the Age of Aquarius, that I feel we now live in, happens to represent Christian (Aquarius) Science (water), or the spiritual teachings of Christianity. So a Christian Scientist is the “water bearer” during the Seventh Day of Love. Likewise, the Age of Pisces, which took place during both the First Coming of Christ and the Second Coming of Christ – our two Christ fish – is a water sign – in other words, Pieces brings forth the Age of Science via Christ Jesus’ spiritual teachings (Chokmah) and Mary Baker Eddy’s spiritual teachings in Christian Science (Binah).
Scorpio, being another water sign (Science) is rooted to Card XX – JUDGEMENT. This card “represents the final state of personal consciousness, which has at last risen from the grave of materiality [mortal mindedness]. Those whose coffins float on the sea of the great subconscious as if they were dead are now regenerated by the trumpet blast of final liberation.” Is not this the sound from the Seventh Trumpet of Love? It must be. It is time to hear this TRUMP blast of divine Science.
I could go on talking about Tarot Cards, but I think that what I have given to you is enough to allow you to understand what they really are all about, even if people refuse to admit it. I do not promote Tarot cards as a fortune-telling device. I would not ever be able to tell anyone’s fortune from the cards; I would not know how to even attempt to do so. Further more, I do not believe that those who made Tarot cards meant for them to be used to tell fortunes. However, I do believe that they were created in order to tell Bible prophecy. I hope that you understand how the Kabala Tree of Life fits in with the Rider-Waite Tarot Cards. I am pretty sure that other Tarot cards, with their various designs, do not accomplish the same thing. This is why I really like the Rider-Waite Deck. I also think that the artist Pamela Colman Smith was the real artist behind them. A man may have given her instructions, but I do not think that he understood what she did. I could be wrong; it is just my opinion on the topic.
JOHN W. DOORLY’S TREE OF LIFE
What John Doorly, and his students, call the tree of life is really the Golden Candlestick located in the Holy Tabernacle (Tent and Temple). It is not really anything like the Kabala Tree of Life Matrix. However, Doorly came up with his own matrix, but I feel like he missed out on the knobs that Moses was told to put onto the Golden Candlestick.
As you can see, there are seven candlestick flames. The Outer Branch of the Candlestick is Mind and Love in the tone of Christianity. The Middle Branch is Spirit and Truth in the tone of the Christ. The Inner Branch is Soul and Life in the tone of the Word. And the Trunk of the Candlestick is Principle in the tone of Science. I believe that the knobs on the branches and connections with the Trunk represent those specific orders of the synonyms for God in coordination with the divine infinite calculus tones. And this is new to Doorly’s matrix or any of his student’s matrix structure for the Golden Candlestick.

Many Christian Scientists are afraid to read books by Doorly and his students because the Church has lied about these teachings and because they have lied about Doorly and his students (made them taboo)! You want proof? Just read Robert Peel’s third biography book about Mary Baker Eddy.

I mention this only because a woman, in the BIBLE, who was having her blood cycle, was considered to be unholy during her period (and afterward). Thus, men did not want to come near the woman. This is why Rebecca’s father would not examine her saddle, that she was sitting on, when looking for his idols.
