PRINCIPLE (following the order of CHRISTIANITY) reflecting the tone of MIND

VISION I – PRINCIPLE reflecting MIND (Revelation chapters 4 and 5).

The Star of Bethlehem/Boston

The Star of Bethlehem/Boston

“Fast circling on, from zone to zone, —
            Bright, blest, afar, —
O’er the grim night of chaos shone
One lone, brave star.” (Christ and Christmas)

This vision has the enthroned one, the four beasts[2] (four living creatures of the divine infinite calculus), the twenty-four elders (of “Recapitulation”), the ark, and the Lamb of God.
PRINCIPLE – The One on the Throne is established, expressing infinite promise and perfection
In VISION I we have the tone of MIND (for its Star-Angel – Enoch) and the tone of PRINCIPLE (for the First Branch-Church Candlestick).  According to John W. Doorly the seven visions elucidate the messages to the churches, so they follow the same sequence of the synonymous terms for God in their Christ order of divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, and Mind.  The whole of Revelation is laid out according to the most exact and coherent scheme, and its beauty is beyond all words.
Doorly tells us that this Vision is presented to us in the Christianity order of Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love.  We begin with Revelation 4:1.

Window of the Open Book (on the southern wall of The First Church of Christ Scientist)

Window of the Open Book (on the southern wall of The First Church of Christ Scientist)

VERSE  1 – Mentions that there is a door opened in heaven, I feel that this is the open Stargate Matrix, which is circular just as the throne of God is circular (and later on, in Vision VII, the city is circular).
Chapter 4:1 says, “…a door was opened in heaven”.  To me this means that the Unity Matrix of the circle – the Stargate Matrix – is opened because WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK in The First Church of Christ Scientist is NOW spiritually understood thanks to Mary Baker Eddy and generic man.  This means simply, I think, that St. John was able to see the spiritual makeup of the throne of God (the circle matrix structure).  And (in Revelation 4:2) he is “immediately…in the spirit” (spiritual consciousness).  The circular throne in Vision I coincides with the circular city in Vision VII.  Vision I and Vision VII are our two foundation stones for the Minor Pyramid Matrix.  (See the matrix structure at the end of REVELATION – Part 2b.)
Our foundation stones (PRINCIPLE reflected by MIND and MIND reflected by LOVE on the Outer Branch of CHRISTIANITY) speak to us about Ezekiel’s Wheel, the open Stargate (door to heaven), and Window of the Open Book, a.k.a. the Unity Matrix.  The Tarot card WHEEL OF FORTUNE is a symbol for Ezekiel’s Wheel.

Notice that there are the four living creatures located in the four corners of the card.  Each living creatures holds an open BIBLE.  To me these open BIBLES represent the four Gospels of St. Matthew (the Word – Lion), St. Mark (the Christ – ox or bull), Luke (Christianity – face [identity] of a man, like how our seven Star-Angels have identities – Enoch, Noah, Moses, Queen Esther, Christ Jesus, Mary Baker Eddy, and Dinah or Martha Jones-Smith), and John (Science – the flying eagle).  Of course, they spiritually translate the four zodiacs of Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio.  The illustration below is the Illustration for the tone of Mind reflecting Love (the other foundation stone.)

Second version of Truth versus Error

Second version of Truth versus Error

Verse 1 cont. – “the first voice”— which is the voice of the Son of man.  Edyth Armstrong Hoyt says that this Son of man is spiritual man.  However, Mary Baker Eddy defines “The son of man” as “the offspring of the flesh” (S&H 594:17).  Another quote from the TEXTBOOK is:  “Jesus called himself ‘the Son of man,’ but not the son of Joseph.  As woman is but a species of the genera, he was literally the Son of Man.  Jesus was the highest human concept of the perfect man.  He was inseparable from Christ, the Messiah—the divine idea of God outside the flesh.  This enabled Jesus to demonstrate his control over matter.  Angels announced to the Wisemen of old this dual appearing, and angels whisper it, through faith, to the hungering heart in every age.” (S&H 482:16)  What Mary Baker Eddy means by the dual appearing is the human and divine coincidence.
Verse 1 says that the “first voice” is like a trumpet, and later on John uses the word trumpet as a symbol for Truth.  But, I feel also that since it is the “first voice” which is speaking Truth, that it would be divine Mind (which is first in the Word order).

Verse 2 – “‘a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne’—the tone is Principle.”[3]  And of course Principle is God.  “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolded to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal” (S&H 306:25-29).  “Principle is the enthroned One, and that One should ever be in our thought.  We should always have in thought the one divine Principle, the essential nature of which is Life, Truth, and Love.  In one sense, Principle does not have to be demonstrated; it is demonstrated.”[4]  Principle as fact makes Life, Truth, and Love omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and omni-active.  We do not need to use them we only have to let them use us.
In Verse 3 John sees someone sitting on the throne,[5] one that has complete divine dominion and authority.  This One is divine Mind.  This divine authority expresses infinite illumination and wisdom (jasper and sardine stone in verse 3).  There is a rainbow around the throne, this means that the Arch of the Covenant is fulfilled; the Arch of the Covenant (to me) is the promise that God made with Noah after the flood.  We are to look to the cloud to see a divine messenger, God’s angel.  This divine messenger is spoken of later on in Revelation 10, in Vision III.  Hoyt says that the rainbow is the promise of immortality and that the word emerald is an expression of perfection (p. 153).  To me the word emerald, being green, is a symbol of divine Science.  However, Hoyt seems to think that it is the “fourth color of the rainbow or keystone color (which is true).  It is also the color of life as we see it growing about us.  The emerald stone stands for that which is precious and clear as crystal, since it is the most precious of all stones.  In the Word order only I have green symbolizing PRINCIPLE, while in the orders for the Christ, Christianity, and Science I have green symbolizing LIFE.  Here in Vision I it is safe to say that the word emerald stands for PRINCIPLE.  Everything about the One on the throne expresses infinite promises and perfection.  We may summarize these qualities or attributes of Deity as follows:

“1.  God rules and holds absolute power of all creation and all activity.
“2.  God is Life and is surrounded by life (Living Creatures [the divine infinite calculus]).
“3.  God is holy, expressing all perfection and purity.”[6]

VERSE 3 – “The point of the symbolism here is that jasper is opaque, the sardine stone is translucent, and the emerald is transparent.  So that gives a sense of the scientific translation of mortal mind through three degrees [as found in S&H 115:19-116:3].  (See S&H 117:19-28; My. 197:15-22; S&H 295:19-24.)  The ‘rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald,’ illustrates the third degree, in which seven hues of divinity are brought out.”[7]
I feel that the mention of the rainbow points to Revelation 10, with its angel messenger, and the Arch of the Covenant promised to Noah in the Second Day of Spirit (a bow in the cloud).  The rainbow upon the angel’s head and seen in the cloud (what the angel is clothed with) in Revelation 10 is the fulfilled promise of the Arch of the Covenant – that which is circular.  Also, our Star-Angel Enoch, being the seventh in the lineage of the woman, represents the “seven hues of divinity.”  This relates particularly to the Seventh Day spoken of in Genesis 1:1-3.  So we must ask if the Lamb of God (Mary Baker Eddy defines Lamb of God as “The spiritual idea of Love; self-immolation; innocence and purity; sacrifice.” S&H 590:9) spoken of in Vision I is really Christ Jesus, or is the Lamb the girl we see in Illustration 7 of Christ and Christmas?  I ask this, particularly because Mary Baker Eddy depicts the time of 5:05 on the Grandfather clock pointing us to Revelation 5:1-5.  Perhaps Christian Scientists do not understand why the seventh Illustration would speak of Revelation 5:1-5 after the third Illustration speaks of Revelation 12:1-5, thinking in their linear mind set, because they have not comprehended that Illustration 7 is a foundation stone along with Illustration 1 on the Minor Pyramid Matrix of Principle.

MIND – Twenty-four Elders on surrounding thrones (seats of power) express authority = “Recapitulation” the New Jerusalem artichoke Matrix
Verse 4 – “Now we come to the tone of Mind in this Christianity sequence, and we have a symbolization of the metaphysics of Mind.  The twenty-four elders, clothed with idea, correspond to the twenty-four questions and answers in Mrs. Eddy’s chapter ‘Recapitulation,’ of which she says, ‘Absolute Christian Science pervades its statements, to elucidate scientific metaphysics’ (S&H 465:4-6).”[8]  My New Jerusalem artichoke matrix is based upon “Recapitulation”.

The first question/answer in “Recapitulation” is of most importance.  It asks, “What is God?”  The answer Mary Baker Eddy gives us is, “God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love.” (S&H 465:9)  Not only is this the rainbow order for the Word sequence of the seven synonyms (presented to us in Verse 4) but it is also the Science order for the Golden Candlestick’s flames (angels) with the divine infinite calculus.

Candlestick Matrix photo
“The whole of ‘Recapitulation’ is an elaboration of that one statement, and its twenty-four questions and answers constitute the categories of metaphysics.  Remember that Mrs. Eddy says, ‘The categories of metaphysics rest on one basis, the divine Mind’ (S&H 269:13-14).  A category is a classification within a classification.  (See also S&H 275:20-24.)”[9]
My New Jerusalem artichoke Matrix shows how the divine infinite calculus (the four beasts) operates in the alternating tones of absolute Christian Science and Christian Science in “Recapitulation.”  It is also seen in Window of the Open Book as the sunflower around the little book open (S&H).  A Jerusalem artichoke is a sunflower.

Center Hub of Window of the Open Book

In verse 4 it says that the twenty-four elders have twenty-four seats, symbolic of power.  In WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK the elders and their seats are represented symbolically as the twenty-four petals of the New Jerusalem artichoke (that surrounds the little book open).
The elders are clothed in white raiment “purity” and their heads have crowns of gold “rule with divine power”.   Ruling with divine power enables them to have their seats of authority.
“Elders were first mentioned in the Bible in connection with the story of Moses…The people were to come with their questions and the elders were to interpret as Moses had directed.
“In many instances the elders themselves gave answers and spoke with authority, but always subordinated their authority to that of Moses [to the seat of Moses].”[10]
The elders of the early Christian Church had much the same function.  Mary Baker Eddy canceled personal sense when she appointed her twenty-four elders in “Recapitulation.”  So, The First Church of Christ Scientist’s elders are not the Board of Directors or any Trustees.
Doorly explains the layout of “Recapitulation” as:  “The first three questions and answers reveal the Word reflecting the Word, the Christ, and Christianity, in absolute Christian Science; the next three questions and answers reveal the same three aspects in Christian Science.  The next six questions and answers present the Christ reflecting the Christ, Christianity, and the Word, first in absolute Christian Science and then in Christian Science.  The following six questions and answers illustrate Christianity reflecting Christianity, the Christ, and the Word, first in Christian Science and then in absolute Christian Science.  The final six questions and answers indicate Christian Science reflecting the Word, the Christ, and Christianity, and then absolute Christian Science reflecting the Word, the Christ, and Christianity.”[11]

Verse 4 cont. – “‘and they had on their heads crowns of gold’—remember, Mrs. Eddy writes of crowning ‘the power of Mind as the Messiah’ (see S&H 116:13-19).”[12]
Doorly speaks about Mary Baker Eddy on the next page (161).  “In 1889 Mrs. Eddy dissolved her first church.  At that time the chapter ‘The Apocalypse’ in Science and Health went no further than the twelfth chapter of Revelation.”  “Dr. Eddy had passed on in 1882 and Mrs. Eddy was very deeply grieved.”  Right after this is when Mary Baker Eddy came to understand that she is the woman God-crowned (Rev. 12), for this was the exact time that the second transit of Venus, the Morning Star, across the sun (the woman being clothed with the sun) to take place during her God-crowned mission.  This means that eight years had passed since the first transit in 1874, that Venus had traveled, or mapped out, its five points of light in the heavens.

Path of Venus B

Doorly continues on about her husband, Asa Gilbert Eddy, “She could never get him to handle animal magnetism, and so animal magnetism handled him, as it always does when it is left alone.  In 1891 Mrs. Eddy revised SCIENCE AND HEALTH again.  A few years before, she had retired to Pleasant View to do this, and it is related that one day she called some of her students to her and said, ‘I have found my husband.’  Then she inserted in her book the commentary on the twenty-first chapter of Revelation, which speaks of the bride, the Lamb’s wife, the city foursquare.  And so there came that wonderful sense of pure Science which climaxed her revelation.  She saw that we are all married to Principle, that the man of God’s creating is both male and female, and in that realization she also found a new and wholly scientific concept of Church.”[13]
It is also worth mentioning that it was in 1893 that Mary Baker Eddy depicted this marriage in her illustrated poem Christ and Christmas.  (My coloration of the Illustration is seen below.)

SOUL – The Angels of His presence (7 spirits before the Throne) illumine the Throne
“Immediately following the description of the elders (in Verse 5), we read of lightenings, voices, and thunders.  Lightening illumines, voices announce or proclaim, thunders arouse and startle or stir.  These upheavals of nature in the Apocalypse are present for the purpose of arousing and illuminating the thought.  (They grow in intensity as we go forward.)  We can speak of the use of these symbols as John’s way of saying:  ‘Wake up!  Pay attention!  This is important!’”[14]

Verse 5 – “‘lightnings and thunderings’—that indicates the chemicalization which takes place when Soul burns the tares.”[15]  “The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the ages, rebuking in their course all error and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven on earth” (S&H 174:17-20).  This process is irresistible.  “God’s revelation of Himself, as the Word is forever being translated through Christ, God’s ideal, forever being demonstrated in Christianity as true manhood, the compound idea man, and forever being established and interpreted in Science.  That is eternally going on, and inevitably every human theory, every false identity, is bound to disappear before the impulsion of the Christ-idea.  But it will disappear much more quickly and much more easily if we are faithful, if we identify ourselves consistently and persistently with that which is God, if we identify our state of consciousness with the divine.  Every little we put into the scale matters [I prefer the words, “makes a difference”].  Every time we exalt thought above the mortal, every time we draw nigh to God, to divine Principle, Life, Truth, and Love, we are putting weight into the right scale, and it makes the overcoming of error quicker and easier.”[16]

Verse 5 cont. – “seven lamps…which are the seven Spirits of God” – follow the Word order for the days of creation, identified through Soul.  “It is through Soul that seeking thought is identified with divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love.
In verse 5 we have the same symbol as seen in chapter 1, the “seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits [angels] of God [of God’s identity].”  [My interpolations.]  I say that these seven lamps have forty-nine flames of fire.
These angels will appear again in VISION III as the angels who blow the trumpets of Truth.  These seven Star-Angels are depicted in the twelfth Keystone window with the Big Dipper in Window of the Open Book as the seven Star-Flowers of Bethlehem/Boston.

The Big Dipper Keystone

“It is interesting to see how the twenty-four elders, the twenty-four questions and answers, which illustrate the categories of metaphysics, lead immediately to the seven lamps or Spirits, the identification of Principle through the days of creation.  That is exactly what happens in ‘Recapitulation.’  All the twenty-four questions and answers are ‘recapitulated’ in the answer to the first question ‘What is God?’ which identifies God through seven synonymous terms.”[17]

SPIRIT – There is One reflection recognized in the Glassy Sea, and the four living creatures
Verse 6 – “sea of glass”—perfect reflection, the tone of Spirit.  Hoyt seemed to accept (like Doorly) that the sea of glass has to do with Spirit while I have felt it had to do with Soul for many years.  I guess I could be incorrect.  But what about the twelve oxen (for the twelve tribes of Israel) which supported the brazen sea?  And we must ask why this is the same verse where the four beasts are introduced.  Is the real “sea of glass” Window of the Open Book?
We have arrived at the capstone/climax of VISION I with verses 6-8.  To me the glassy sea is Window of the Open Book; it is, as Verse 6 says, “a sea of glass like unto crystal”.  Hoyt says that the glassy sea to be a reference to the Brazen Laver found in the Outer Court of the Holy Tabernacle Tent of Meeting and Solomon’s Temple.  The water became smooth like a mirror to offer up the reflection of whoever looked into the water.  The priests also washed their hands in the water (purification or baptism).  And yet, today, this sea of glass like unto crystal could actually refer to glass, the glass (crystal) in WINDOW OF THE OPEN BOOK.  If so, then it would explain why there is mention of the four beasts “full of eyes” in this same verse.  According to Hoyt, twelve metal oxen held up the glassy.  This too gives us a partial divine infinite calculus and the twelve oxen would have a total of twenty-four eyes “full of eyes.”  Window of the Open Book depicts the full divine infinite calculus Unity Matrix.  This divine infinite calculus is explained in apocalyptic writings, you will find it the topic in Ezekiel 1.  Ezekiel and St. John use the four creatures in order to nullify the physical science of astrology.

Verse 6 cont. – “four beasts” equal the four living creatures in Ezekiel 1 and are called the divine infinite calculus in Christian Science.  “As soon as there is the pure reflection of Spirit, thought sees that Principle operates in a calculus of divine ideas, ‘full of eyes before and behind.’  Mrs. Eddy says, ‘It only needs the prism of this Science to divide the rays of Truth, and bring out the entire hues of Deity, which scholastic theology has hidden’ (Mis. 194:13-16).  The calculus brings out ‘the entire hues of Deity’ through the days of creation or ‘numerals of infinity.’  Mrs. Eddy speaks of ‘the infinite calculus defining the line, plane, space, and fourth dimension of Spirit’ (Mis. 22:11-12), and it is interesting how closely she associates the idea of a calculus with the term Spirit.  Her definition of ‘good’ begins ‘God; Spirit;’ and then she goes on to give the fourfold sequence of ‘omnipotence; omniscience; omnipresence; omni-action’ (S&H 587:19-20).  That is the only place in her writings where she uses the term ‘omni-action,’ and moreover, in that definition the emphasis is wholly on the term Spirit.”[18]
Verse 7 describes the four beasts as – a lion (to nullify Leo with the Word), a calf (to nullify Taurus with the Christ), a face of a man (to nullify Aquarius with Christianity), and a flying eagle (to nullify Scorpio[19] with Science).  In Ezekiel the word Zoon is translated as “living creatures” (the correct translation) yet in Revelation it was translated as “beasts.”  At the time of the translation (King James Bible) every living creature was called a beast.  The lion is a symbol for All-Power of the Word, and the fourth tribe of Jacob, Judah, took the symbol of the lion.  A calf or ox is the most helpful beast to man.  However, the fact that it was used as a symbol for the Christ could be explained in that the Apis Bull of Egypt was considered to be sacred and it would reincarnate from time to time.  Of course, it always came back as a bull.  I believe that after Moses led the Israelites out from Egypt and when they made the golden calf it was their attempt to have their own version of the Apis bull.  The bull or ox is a symbol for the All-Intelligent Christ.  The term “face of a man” is probably a reference to the phrase “Son of man” a symbol for All-Mind, the whole of Christianity reflecting divine Mind.  And finally the flying eagle is symbolic of omni-active Science, with its four levels of Christian Science, absolute Christian Science, divine Science, and Science itself.
“We cannot accept the thought of bestiality near the One on the throne.  Neither can we accept the thought of associating the beast of chapter 13 with the throne, and many have thought the beasts of chapter 4 and the beasts of chapter 13 all the same.  They are not and never have been connected and never will have any connection.”[20]
The divine infinite calculus is “full of eyes within and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Which was, and is, and is to come.”
“There is just one other point we must check in regard to these living creatures of John’s vision.  He tells us that each one of them has six wings.  That means they are seraphim (angels) and are synonymous with the cherubim on top of the Ark [Mercy Seat], representing wisdom and [spiritual] understanding.”[21]

To Recap

The divine infinite calculus

The WORD – Omnipotence – Mind
Verse 7 – “like a lion”—the lion is the symbol used for the Word of God.  On the topic of moral courage, Mary Baker Eddy speaks of the lion, “‘the lion of the tribe of Juda,’ the king of the mental realm” (S&H 514:10-11).  The lion is given the sense of Mind.

The CHRIST – All Intelligence – Spirit
Verse 7 cont. – “like a calf”— or sometimes spoken of as an “ox” is a prototype of the Christ, “it also symbolized the purity of Spirit.”[22]

CHRISTIANITY – All Mind – Soul
Verse 7 cont. – “a face of a man”—this “face symbolizes the identity of manhood, which is Christianity, and also illustrates Soul.”[23]

SCIENCE – Omni-action – Principle
Verse 7 cont. – “‘a flying eagle’—the eagle, soaring above all, was regarded as the royal bird, and it is a type of Science and of Principle.”[24]  The word “flying” is a symbol for the eagle’s omni-activity.  What Doorly misses out on is that these four living creatures translate back to God the four zodiac constellations of Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio.  They take these four zodiacs out of the hand of material cause and translate them into the operation of God’s Science.

Six Wings of “Recapitulation” as absolute Christian Science and Christian Science
Verse 8 – “‘six wings’ [of the four beasts]—we saw how in ‘Recapitulation’ the ‘four’ of the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science have ‘six wings’ each, three questions and answers illustrating absolute Christian Science and three illustrating Christian Science, thereby making twenty-four in all.  The wings, of course, also symbolize the fifth day ‘soaring aspirations,’ and the ‘six wings’ are characterized in Mrs. Eddy’s Glossary definition of God, which includes the Christianity sequence of the synonymous terms, and which reads, in part:  ‘The all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal’ (S&H 587:5-6).”[25]

Full of eyes within
Verse 8 cont. – “‘full of eyes within’—a symbol of the sixth day, of the consciousness of Truth.  ‘The kingdom of God is within you.’”[26]  Hoyt says that the eyes symbolize omniscience.  I like both explanations.
According to Doorly the following words are the eyes within, defined in “Glossary” as “God.  … “the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal” (S&H 587:5-6).

The Seventh Day of Love
Verse 8 cont. – “‘and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy’—a sense of the holiness and fulfilment of the seventh day of Love.
“So these four beasts in the tone of Spirit illustrate the operation of the Word as Mind, the Christ as Spirit, Christianity as Soul, and Science as Principle; their wings symbolize Life, their eyes the consciousness of Truth, and their hymn of praise the fulfilment of Love.”[27]

LIFE – One creation (life) recognized
In verse 9 John is conscious, as never before, of the divine infinite calculus.  He comprehends God’s and man’s wholeness, fullness, and completeness, that operates in the universe.  There is only one creation, and that is spiritual creation.  John hears the musical tones that enable man to give glory and honor and thanks to God. Then in verse 10 and 11 the twenty-four elders, the interpreters (teachers) of God, twenty-four questions and answers of “Recapitulation” enable us to understand, accept, and know God’s omnipotence.  Mary Baker Eddy utilized the divine infinite calculus in “Recapitulation.”
At this point, I feel that Doorly is incorrect in his divisions of the synonyms.  He does not have the tone of LIFE beginning with Verse 9, but I feel as if this is where the tone begins, I am going along with Edyth Armstrong Hoyt on this.  (Both of them are Christian Scientists.)

Verse 9, 10 – “In proportion as you understand and use Principle as the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science, the twenty-four questions and answers of ‘Recapitulation’ assume their rightful place in relation to the divine system of Principle, and they ‘give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne’—they just exist to glorify the one Principle.  As you understand how Principle operates as the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science, then the Science of the twenty-four questions and answers becomes perfectly plain to you, and you can understand and use it.
“The symbolization of this story is exact and scientific beyond words, and it is all built on the ‘one’ of infinity, the ‘three’ of Life, Truth, and Love, the ‘four’ of the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science, the ‘seven’ of the seven synonymous terms, the days of creation, and the numerals of consciousness, the ‘ten’ of their application to the human, and the ‘twelve’ of the demonstration of Life, Truth, and Love as the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science.  These symbols were deeply embedded in Babylonian thought, but the prophets lifted them out of the realm of astrology [the Wheel or Zodiac Stargate[28]], and reproduced them in an exalted way as symbols of the divine system [the Window of the Open Book Stargate].  My own feeling is that the whole system of symbolism may be said to be built on the circle, signifying the ‘one,’ the triangle, signifying the ‘three,’ and the square, signifying the ‘four.’  [This I explain as the UPN – the United Paramount Network.]  The ‘seven,’ the ‘ten,’ and the ‘twelve’ can be formed by adding or multiplying one, three, and four.”[29]

Verse 11 – “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power:  for thou hast created [given Life to] all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created [they are alive].”  [My interpolations.]

TRUTH – is the sealed book really the Bible (the book of Life) or is it Revelation?
We now are moving on to the fifth chapter, verses 1-5.  This is a very important passage because I believe it has to do with the time depicted on the Grandfather clock in Christ and Christmas’ seventh illustration – “SUFFER [PERMIT] THE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME.”  And even though the Lamb is said to be Jesus, Mary Baker Eddy defined Lamb as “spiritual idea.”  Thus, the girl sitting on the chair foursquare is a Lamb of God.  The light from the Morning Star (Venus), that Jesus promised to us in Revelation, shines down upon this spiritual idea and upon the little book open – SCIENCE AND HEALTH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, by Mary Baker Eddy.  Yet the BIBLE, sitting on the table next to the old man of scholastic theology, is a closed book.

Suffer Children FE

In Revelation 5:1 John sees the expression of divine authority (the right hand) a book of prophecy and revelation.  Hoyt says that the book is “the old Scriptures, written on both sides [like a modern book is], ready to be understood and used, but obscured for a while with the seven seals [of scholastic theology (false prophecy)] which have kept the book from being understood [opened up].” (p. 155)
Revelation says of the book, “written within and on the back side, sealed with seven seals.”  The question is, being that this is John’s vision, is the book really the Bible even though the Bible was not a book at the time that Revelation was written?  Or is this book the book of Revelation itself?  Is John specifically speaking about the book of Revelation here?  If it is Revelation then he is giving us a clue as to what will unseal his book of prophecy – the seven names for God given to us by Mary Baker Eddy, the seven synonymous terms of Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love.  It is a fact that Revelation would unseal the BIBLE, because John uses the symbols found in the Torah.  I do not think that the book is actually a vision of SCIENCE AND HEALTH, because why would John have a vision of SCIENCE AND HEALTH in Vision I when he has a vision of the book in Vision III?  For sure, the two books are definitely linked to each other.  And because the BIBLE is a “closed book” in “SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN…” then I am willing to concede that the book spoken of in Verse 1 is a Vision of the upcoming BIBLE, and for sure, Revelation is part of the BIBLE.
In “SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN…” the sealed book, as seen on the table next to the old man of scholastic theology, cannot be unsealed until the modern day Lamb of God opens up SCIENCE AND HEALTH because it is the KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES.

The Root of David, expressing the Lion (WORD) qualities of David is found worthy to open the Book of True Prophecy

Verse 1 – In the right hand of the One on the throne of Principle there is a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.  Back in John’s Day of Life scrolls were sealed with wax and then a metal or ceramic seal was imprinted upon the hot wax.  This formed a circle of wax, and one could tell when the wax seal was broken.  These types of seals were placed upon royal documents, laws, etc.  So this book, or scroll, had seven wax seals on it.
The BIBLE is known as the Book of Life.  “As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.” (S&H 497:3-4)  Notice, Mary Baker Eddy says “As adherents [as followers] of Truth,” so emphases is placed on the fact that readers of the BIBLE must follow Truth, even though the BIBLE (Truth) is “our sufficient guide [that which leads us] to eternal Life.”
The “Bible contains both the subjective and the objective aspects of reality.”[30]  This is what Doorly says is the meaning behind “written within and on the backside.”  However, I just found out another explanation for the term “backside” in a book by one of Doorly’s students.  The book is called SCIENCE VAST I.  She says that the Bible term “backside” means “west side” that this was considered to be a very fertile place (land).  To me this means, that since west is the cardinal point for Christian Science, that backside means that the book is written on the side of Christian Science.  And Christian Science is the level of Science that deals with the objective thought (healing takes place in our outer experience).
Doorly describes the “seven seals” as “the scientific analysis of animal magnetism.”[31]  I feel, that these “seven seals” could be the seven skins of Adam – the skins given to him after he ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Perhaps they symbolize Adam’s seven layers of skin?  The analysis of these seven seals is what helps us to open up the book of prophecy.  The affirmation of Truth enables us to deny error.  For example:  The affirmation of Truth says, “God is the only Mind (which is divine).”  The denial of error says, “There is no mortal mind or Adam brain (big giant head).”  I think the seven layers of Adam’s skin are beliefs in mortal mind, matter, material ego, ecclesiastical despotism, death, error, and hate.  These seven skins must be peeled away one by one, which is done in Vision II.

Verse 2 – “‘a strong angel’—a symbol of Life and Truth, which indicate the Word reflecting Christianity, the Word operating in the life of Christ Jesus as the individual demonstration of Christ or Truth.”[32]  This strong angel (divine messenger) is the only one worthy to open the book.  In reality, the Christ is “a strong angel,” however, the Christ comes (more than once) in order to destroy incarnate error, thus the Christ comes in the Day of Life as Jesus, in the Day of Truth as Mary Baker Eddy, and in the Day of Love as Dinah or Martha Jones-Smith (generic man).

Verse 3 – “no man…able to open the book” does this mean that it is left up to a woman to open up the book?  “In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook.  The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated.  No human pen nor tongue taught me the Science contained in this book, Science and Health; and neither tongue nor pen can overthrow it.  This book may be distorted by shallow criticism or by careless or malicious students, and its ideas may be temporarily abused and misrepresented; but the Science and truth therein will forever remain to be discerned and demonstrated.” (S&H 110:13-24)
Hoyt writes that this angel is Michael.  Mary Baker Eddy tells us that Michael is Truth.  I tell you that Michael is Mary Baker Eddy and she asks, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”
Could Verse 3 mean that “there is no man in heaven [in the Third Degree of spiritual understanding], nor in earth [in the Second Degree of morality], neither under the earth [in the First Degree of depravity], was able to open the book, neither to look thereon”?  It is also of interest that when Mary Baker Eddy spoke of her successor in 1901 that she states that her successor is a man (which according to her writings includes woman) – yet, this “man” she says was not on earth at that time.  This means that her successor was to come at a later time.  She depicts her successor as a Lamb of God with her (Mary’s) little book open.  This is the only Illustration where the TEXTBOOK is actually an open book.
“Genesis and the Apocalypse seem more obscure than other portions of the Scripture, because they cannot possibly be interpreted from a material standpoint.  To the author, they are transparent, for they contain the deep divinity of the Bible.” (S&H 546:18-22).
The book is a closed book (it is sealed).  John cannot see anyone who is ready to open this book.  Yet, one of the elders tells John not to weep.
In verse 4 John weeps much because there is no man found worthy to open and read the book or to look thereon.  Does this mean that a woman is the one who is worthy to open and read the book or to look thereon?

Verse 5 – This verse in particular has to do with Mary Baker Eddy.  “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not:  behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
The one elder, Doorly says, is the question and answer in “Recapitulation” – “Is there no sin?” (S&H 472:23) and its answer gives “a sense of Jesus’ individual demonstration of the Christ.  But Mary Baker Eddy also brings in her own God-crowned mission.  Example:  “The reception accorded to Truth in the early Christian era [with Jesus] is repeated to-day [with Mary Baker Eddy].  Whoever [not whatever] introduces the Science of Christianity [like Mary Baker Eddy did] will be scoffed at and scourged with worse cords than those which cut the flesh [of Jesus].” (S&H 474:4-8; [My interpolations.])
“Weep not” the answer tells us, “behold, the Lion [the Word] of the tribe of Judah [“…the spiritual understanding of God and man appearing” (S&H 589:24)], the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals [the seven names of God] thereof.” [My interpolations.]  Mary Baker Eddy’s family crest had lions on it.  I feel that this means that she may have been of the Root of David.  Notice the lion crest on the Tarot card below.  Also notice the wall mural I painted in 1982, how it resembles somewhat the Queen of Wands card.  I painted the mural before I even saw my first Tarot cards and before I realized that the woman symbolized the woman God-crowned (as I had not as yet any idea who the woman God-crowned was).  The river and waterfall in the top picture were not part of my original design, they just sort of happened.  They symbolize Lynn, Massachusetts.  I originally painted two rubies (Mary Baker Eddy’s birth stone) on her crown (second picture), and later on decided to add ten more, unfortunately I cannot find any pictures of this (I am sure I took pictures of it).  My white wall is a symbol of the moon.

Notice the lions at her side, symbolic of Judah and the Word.

Prophecy Mural B

Verse 5 cont. – “‘Juda’—remember that Mrs. Eddy defines ‘Judah,’ in part, as ‘the spiritual understanding of God and man appearing’ (S&H 389:24-25).”[33]  The verse also tells us “behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda”.  This lion is the Word – the Bride.

Verse 5 cont. – “‘the Root of David’—David gave a sense of the male and female of God’s creating.”[34]  The “Root” means “the Basis of David” which would be Principle as the basis of Love (David).
It seems like everyone is often stuck with thinking about a word in one way only, as it has been presented in the past and present.  So, let us take a different look at the word root.  One meaning of root is “to turn over, dig up, or discover and bring to light”.[35]  What is it of David that must be discovered and brought to light?  Is it not the Key of David?  The Key of David is presented in the Christian Science Textbook after “Recapitulation” is finished.  It is the second part of the Textbook and it consists of three chapters:  “Genesis,” “The Apocalypse,” and “Glossary.”  (“Fruitage” is the final chapter, but it is not part of the “Key.”  It is part three of the Textbook.)  But in Truth, the whole TEXTBOOK is the KEY (as depicted above in Illustration 7).
Again, KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES happens to be the three chapters – “Genesis,” “The Apocalypse,” and “Glossary.”  These three chapters unlock the BIBLE.  Opening the Scriptures with the Key of David (to be love) unlocks the treasures of eternal Life.  “These things saith He that is holy, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works:  behold, I have set before thee and open door, and no man can shut it.” — Revelation.
On page 47 and 48 Hoyt writes about Rev. 5:1-5.  “Throughout the Old Testament there are frequent references to ‘The Root of David,’ the ‘Root of Jesse,’ ‘The Stock of Jesse,’ etc.  This is a reference to the Messiah.  Jesus was proclaimed the Messiah.  So here we have Jesus, the Root of David, expressing the lion qualities as exemplified by David, who was called the ‘Lion of the Tribe of Judah.’  Jesus, therefore, is found worthy to open the Book which appears in the hand of the One on the throne.  This intriguing Book is ‘close, sealed with seven seals.’  These seals are to be broken in the second vision.  It is an important step to find someone worthy to open the seals.  John wept, because with his limited understanding and vision, he could not see anyone ready.  At this point one of the elders comes into action and says to John, ‘Weep not, the Lion that is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David,’ has been found worthy to overcome and to open the Book, in other words, Jesus, expressing the Lion qualities.”  [My interpolation.]
I will let you decide which explanation you like the best.  I think all explanations are possible.

Verse 5 cont. – “‘loose the seven seals’—Mrs. Eddy says of this, ‘nothing short of this divine Principle, understood and demonstrated, can ever furnish the vision of the Apocalypse, open the seven seals of error with Truth, or uncover the myriad illusions of sin, sickness, and death’ (S&H 572:12-17).”[36]  Speaking of this, Vision I is the left side of the base of the Minor Pyramid Matrix of Principle while Vision VII is the right side of the base of the Minor Pyramid Matrix of Principle.  And Vision VII’s accompanying Illustration from Christ and Christmas is “SUFFER THE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME,” has the Grandfather clock depicting the time of 5:05 which specifically has to do with Revelation 5:1-5.  So, the girl sitting in the foursquare chair (minor pyramid – her throne) is the one who will open up the closed BIBLE.  For she has “a little book open” in her hands and the Star of divine Science is shining down upon her.
This is where the tone of TRUTH comes to an end and we begin with the tone of LOVE, even though Doorly has the tone of TRUTH going up to Verse 8.

Hoyt writes about verse 6 (p. 155):  “Picture to yourself what it was I now saw in the presence of the One on the Throne, in the presence of All-Power [omnipotence], All-Intelligence, All-Mind [omniscience], All-Action [omni-action], and in the [omni-] presence of complete authority:  there was a Lamb standing.  This Lamb is Christ Jesus, who by his self-denial and self-sacrifice, is known as the Lamb of God, the willing one.  His strength and vision are the expression of the ‘angels of His presence’ which God sent forth into all the earth.”  [My interpolations.]  As mentioned before, Mary Baker Eddy defines Lamb of God as “The spiritual idea of Love; self-immolation; innocence and purity; sacrifice.” (S&H 590:9)  Truth be told, Hoyt’s description could also refer to Mary Baker Eddy.
Let us agree to say that the Lamb is, for sure, the Christ.  The Christ is not limited to Jesus alone.  While there is only one Christ, this one Christ is manifested collectively by each individual, or by man’s true identity the spiritual idea.  In verse 7 the Christ came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.  So who is this one upon the throne?  It must be divine Mind (God).

The Oneness of the Lamb (her presentation of the Christ) and the Throne is established with dominion.

Verses 6, 7 – Principle always designates “in the midst,” it is the hub center of activity (for Science).  The tree of knowledge of good and evil (the opposite of Principle) and the tree of life (Science) are both in the midst of the Garden (in Genesis).  And here we have the four beasts of the divine infinite calculus and the twenty-four elders.  Then we have “a Lamb as it had been slain”—“This was ‘the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,’—slain, that is, according to the testimony of the corporeal senses, but undying in the deific Mind” (S&H 334:21-24).  (See also My 185:16-21 and Mis 358:15-17 [to semi-colon].)
This lamb has “seven horns” which are symbolic of power.  It also has seven eyes, which means “the seven Spirits of God” – the seven days of Genesis 1-2:3.  In a later Vision one of the beasts is described as a lamb with horns, however, this beast-lamb is the anti-Christ.
Thus, “the whole picture is summarized:  Principle enthroned, the divine infinite calculus, the twenty-four questions and answers in ‘Recapitulation,’ and the days of creation.  When we have an understanding of Principle as the infinite One, when we understand the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science, when we understand the twenty-four questions and answers in ‘Recapitulation,’ and we see how they present the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science, each reflected as the Word, Christ, and Christianity, in absolute Christian Science, and in Christian Science, which is Science applied to the human, and when we understand the seven days of creation, then we possess that state of consciousness which can ‘take the book.’  That is what, by God’s grace, we are doing to-day—we are taking the book and loosing its seals.  John shows us how we can do it, and when we can do that, we can teach.  Teaching will then cease to be a privileged profession, and it will become universal and individual.”[37]
In verse 8, after the Lamb takes the book, the four beasts and twenty-four elders fall down before the Lamb, in other words they recognized the importance of the Lamb’s place in Bible prophecy.  The golden bowls are full of the incense of gratitude and the harps are “a great paean of praise, like the prayers of gratitude expressed of old by the Holy ones.”[38]
“Glory be to God, and peace to the struggling hearts!  Christ hath rolled away the stone from the door of human hope and faith, and through the revelation and demonstration of life in God, hath elevated them to possible at-one-ment with the spiritual idea of man and his divine Principle, Love.” (S&H 45:16-21)
The two verses (9 and 10) are the end of VISION I.  The four beasts and twenty-four elders sing a song, the tones of Christ.  “Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof:  for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation:  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests:  and we shall reign on the earth.”  There is recognition of the dominion and power (kings and priests) that the act of consecration brings.
Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Even the Scriptures gave no direct interpretation of the scientific basis for demonstrating the spiritual Principle of healing, until our heavenly Father saw fit, through the Key to the Scriptures, in Science and Health, to unlock this ‘mystery of godliness’” (Ret 37:16-20).

Verse 10 – “‘and hast made us unto our God kings and priests’—Jesus said, ‘He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also,’ and he meant it.  There is no limit to the possibility of demonstration for Jesus or Mrs. Eddy or me or you or anybody else.  This idea is Science, and therefore it is universal and impartial.  It is available to each one of us if we work for it, live for it, understand it, and use it.  The moment we begin to understand something of Science, it just tears the mask from personal sense, hypocrisy, chaos, disorder, and so forth, because the standard of Science is absolutely exact.”[39]
Chapters 4-5:10 “interpret God as made manifest in the Scriptures through the Word and the Christ, — Life and Truth, — then as revealed in Christianity by Mary Baker Eddy as Christian Science, or Science applied to the human, first called ‘The Science of Man,’ Mrs. Eddy’s name for the pamphlet which formed the basis of ‘Recapitulation.’”[40]

“Theme:  Vision One ends in a song of praise and gratitude because the Oneness of God, the One on the throne, and the Lamb, the Christ, has been established.  They are included in one reflection in the glassy sea.  This Oneness implies dominion to all individuals proving the ever-presence of the Christ.”[41]
This is where Edyth Armstrong Hoyt has Vision I coming to an end, and the rest of Chapter 5 is the Protective Introduction to Vision II.  Vision II does not actually begin until Chapter 6.  So I will write about Chapter 5:11-14 in Vision II (Part 4).

[1] “This vision is the basis of all economic hope, the conviction of a living God and a living Christ.  Such a complete and overmastering conviction of the reality of God as the creation and ruler of the universe, was the spiritual inspiration which led to the founding of our American Commonwealth and laid the basis for our democratic way of life.” Calkins, Raymond:  Social Message of the Book of Revelation p. 70.
