Judge Hanna’s Christ and Christmas – Part 5
MRS. EDDY’S EXPLANATION OF THE ILLUSTRATED POEM “CHRIST AND CHRISTMAS” AS GIVEN BY JUDGE SEPTIMUS J. HANNA Part 5
We are now ready to take our fourth step up on the Major Pyramid Matrix of Truth. Remember, all my additions to the Hanna manuscript are in bold letters.

Yet wherefore signalize the birth
Of him ne’er born?
What can rehearse the glorious worth
Of his high morn?
Before Abraham was I am. Christ Jesus.
“Early on the morn of July 16, 1904 [Mary Baker Eddy’s birthday], the cornerstone of the extension of The Mother Church was laid at 8 o’clock. The corner stone for the original had been lain in the evening. The extension was a fitting crown to the cross of the original.” What I would like to add is that if you put a circle (a crown) on top of a plus cross you get the symbol for Venus – the Morning Star that Jesus promised to mankind.
Mary Baker Eddy writes, “The modest edifice of The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist, began with the cross; its excelsior extension is the crown. The room of your Leader remains in the beginning of this edifice, evidencing the praise of babes and the word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Its crowning ultimate rises to a mental monument, a superstructure high above the work of men’s hands, even the outcome of their hearts, giving to the material a spiritual significance — the speed, the beauty, and achievements of goodness. Methinks this church is the one edifice on earth which most prefigures self-abnegation, hope, faith; love catching a glimpse of glory,” (Miscellany 6:17) I emphasis her words: “The room of your Leader remains in the beginning of this edifice…” pointing out that it is located as the capstone, located at the highest point of the little Church edifice.
In “Christmas Morn” there appears to be a church in the background (in gray – for the Second Degree). This church resembles The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston with the Edifice and Extension as one.
“As the sun dawns, the darkness disappears with great speed. To the artist of a picture of The Mother Church called Dawn that Mrs. Eddy had in her library, she wrote, ‘Your picture of the Mother Church of Christ, Scientist, distinguishes the artist, points a history, and illuminates it.’ This was her reply to the artist’s letter of July 27, 1907, in which he said; ‘I represent the Christ Science Church rising unharmed out of the smoke of contending factions, the struggle of creeds and all sort of ‘isms’ for supremacy.’ (See Christian Science Sentinel, Vol. X, 732)
“Mary Baker Eddy never came closer to the extension than to drive one day in her carriage to a spot where she could see its great dome looming high against the blue sky, just as she depicted it in this picture of Christ and Christmas. Perhaps our Leader had seen the vision of the extension many years prior to its building, and she was willing to see only what God revealed to her in vision – the crowning dome. She had seen it as early as 1893 when this picture was drawn.”
Our Leader was content to abide with the substance rather than the symbol, for she would not be present at the church’s open ceremonies. She was at work in her Pleasant View study in Concord. She remained at her watch – working and praying for humanity.
I am not sure that this author’s theory is true, and I offer the following for evidence. Often while the artist Gilman was working on Christ and Christmas he would go through some dark mental periods. This was brought on by his being chastised by Truth via Mary Baker Eddy and his personal sense fought against God’s will (as she always followed God’s will and expected her students to do likewise). These dark periods were brought on by animal magnetism working against Truth and Gilman had to spiritually work to get back into the light. On pages 38 and 39 of his book it reads: “Immediately after the peculiar dark period of conflict with evil belief followed by the new dawn of Truth’s light as above narrated, I was walking toward Bow Mills, about sunset. In this walk I was still naturally in my freshly attained chastened sense, and therefore more ready to hear and see spiritually. The sky was mostly cloudy, but a break in the clouds in the west occurred as I walked, so that the sundown rays of light streamed through, causing a sharp cupola that was on a building just in line with me and the sunset rays of light, together with some beautiful trees, to appear silhouetted against the light western sky in a very picturesque, artistic way. Immediately the spirit of Truth said to me, ‘There, that is what is wanted in the picture with the angels to represent “the heavenly worth of that high morn.”’ And so it proved afterwards when I had incorporated it into the illustration, for when I showed it to Mrs. Eddy, she at once expressed great joy because of the spiritual beauty of the whole picture as expressing her sense of the verse in the poem it was intended to illustrate, and she asked for no change to be made in it. In the finished illustration, the spire of the little church is made higher than the cupola on the building to suit poetic requirements, but it was the product of the ideal God gave to me in nature to supply my need for getting a suitable illustration for the poem. (The distant dome in this picture which I added for beauty’s sake and thinking of the State House dome in Boston, appears at a later date to have been prophetic of the present Mother Church dome erected A. D., 1906.)”
I find it interesting that he had a sunset in the West as model for the sunrise in the illustration, as if to say to us once more, this book is not about the Life and Light of Christ Jesus (in the East) but about the Life and Light of Mary Baker Eddy (in the West).
It was on April 8, 1906 that Mary Baker Eddy saw the dome and wrote, “I have faith in the givers and in the builders of this church edifice, — admiration for and faith in the grandeur and sublimity of this superb superstructure, wherein all vanity of victory disappears and glory of divinity appears in all its promise.” (Miscellany p. 25) I would not doubt that Mary Baker Eddy had a vision of the Extension dome, as I know that she had a vision of the Edifice years before it was built.
It was June 2, 1906 (eight days before the Extension’s dedication) that sufficient funds were at hand for completing the building. The Extension was built to seat 5,012 people. “This symbolized her crowning achievement in feeding humanity through spiritual means alone, just as Jesus fed the five thousand and twelve disciples – a tender, mothering Shepherd feeding her children.”
Years before this she had written to a student: “Jesus no doubt supplied the literal loaf and fish to their sense so as to impress upon them at that period, the Christian era, with the fact of his twofold power, as the Way-shower, or mediator between the things of the flesh and those of Spirit. His mission on earth was this, declaratively and demonstrably from the beginning to the end.
“Not so is the Christ’s appearing at this age. Rather is it now to show through Science and not the senses the power of Spirit and of Good, and to spiritualize all the meaning of the Christ, to name Christ the idea and not the person of God, and to impress, at this period, the Science of Spirit on the mind, through Truth, and the phenomena of Mind, and not matter. To voice God less in parable, and more in the facts of Being. This must be the true interpretation of the Parable of the loaves and fishes, because Jesus could in no other way have made the way for the second appearing of Christ in Science.”
The morning beams of the Christ, Truth, were beginning to dawn in the consciousness of the Cause. Everything portrayed in “Christmas Eve” and “Treating the Sick” was “beginning to be overcome, and the light was shining forth with greater intensity and with a more brilliant magnitude than had been seen before.”
The author of this manuscript tells us that two questions are presented in the text of this poem for “Christmas Morn.” We are asked why we should “mark the birth of the Christ idea” as being remarkable, “as something eminent or notable? The second question is asking us what can repeat the “glorious worth and value of the risen Christ or the First Advent?”
The first question must be answered in a positive way. “A recognition of the new-old birth of the Christ in our experience must come. We must acknowledge the channel through which it comes, else it has little relevance to our experience.” Each of us must recognize the birth of the Christ as the spiritual idea of God, which can never be born in the flesh. The birth that is of importance is “its appearance to humanity through the enlightened consciousness of a clear transparency.”
The second question has us asking what can “repeat the glorious worth or value of the risen Christ?” Only Christian Science can give utterance to this Christ idea, eclipsing the cross (the symbol for Christianity) with the crown (the symbol for Science). This would be the Second Advent. It would be “the second witnessing, rehearsing, repeating, the first witnessing of the Christ.”
“The two questions asked in this portion of the poem are answered thus: through a recognition of the Two Witnesses. The birth must be recognized, and it can only be recognized spiritually through Christian Science. Christian Science reveals the Two Witnesses.” 
After reading James Gilman’s book (which is based upon his diary notes), I feel there is more to this illustration than the two angels representing the two witnesses from Revelation 11 . The “Introduction Chapter” of Mr. Gilman’s Recollections of Mary Baker Eddy was written by Gilbert C. Carpenter, a Christian Scientist that once worked in the home of Mary Baker Eddy. On pages xxxi-xxxii it speaks about the Fifth Illustration “Christmas Morn”. Surprisingly, Mary Baker Eddy originally pictured three female angels! I had forgotten this, as I have not read the book since the nineties.
“The students who understand and, to some degree, are taking advantage of the practical Christian Science disclosed in this work, rejoice in Mrs. Eddy’s grand pioneering. They endeavor to study the pictures from a spiritual standpoint. If they learn that Mrs. Eddy wrote to Mr. Gilman on May 8, 1893 to have three angels in the fifth picture, they do not necessarily assume that she made a mistake and changed her direction to two. She wrote of this picture: ‘Have it a glorious sunrise and three angels in female forms in the air pointing to this dawn; but have no wings on them. Make no specialty of the ground, have it a sky view. Now carry out these designs with all the skill of an artist and my story is told in Christian Science, the new story of Christ, and the world will feel its renovating influence.’
“In I Sam. 10:3, 4 we learn that when Saul was anointed by Samuel, he was told that on this journey he would meet a man carrying three loaves of bread,” [I would like to stop here, as bread is often a key word in the Bible that refers to a woman.] “who would give him two of them. Spiritually considered this incident should teach us that, when we come to Christian Science, we are given two loaves, but the third one we must demonstrate for ourselves. When a man discovers certain mathematical propositions, this might be called the first loaf, that corresponds to the Master’s demonstration of divine Mind. Next comes the demand to embody those mathematical rules in a textbook in such a way that students may learn and use them. This might be called the second loaf, and corresponds to Mrs. Eddy’s discovery of the Science the Master taught and her incorporation of it in a textbook for all to study and to practice. The final demand is that the average scholar prove he can take the textbook on mathematics and by its aid gain a knowledge that will enable him to grasp and to prove the propositions contained therein. This is the third loaf that can never be given to a student, since he must demonstrate it for himself. The two loaves the inquirer is given when he comes to Christian Science might be said to be the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures; the third he must demonstrate for himself.
“It follows from this incident in the life of Saul, therefore, that spiritual intuition told Mrs. Eddy that there should be three angels in the fifth picture in Christ and Christmas, yet only two of them should be depicted since the third remains for each student to demonstrate and embody for himself.”
This makes me wonder if, as some Christian Scientists have claimed, that the two angels really are male and female and if they are symbols of the two witnesses. It also makes me wonder when Mary Baker Eddy decided there would be more to the illustration upon the ground.
Whether or not the use of I Samuel is correct or not, I cannot say, but I do like how it points to the three advents of Christ with Jesus’ demonstration of divine Mind, Mary’ incorporation of divine Mind in the Textbook for the whole of mankind, and finally Martha’s individual demonstration of divine Mind. With Jesus we have the book of Life – the Bible, with Mary we have the book of Truth – Science and Health, and with Martha we have the need for reading both books and studying them so that we can demonstrate Mother’s Hood (Love’s Mind, which is divine).
Another possibility for the early thought of having three angels could be that they represented Mary Baker Eddy as Discoverer, Founder, and Leader. She understood that her followers would easily accept the first two and forget the third – that of Leadership.
On Page iii Carpenter writes: “One who knows little of spiritual law is apt to criticize the acts of one who is implicitly obeying the demands of God, because many of those acts defy analysis by the human mind. Mr. Gilman states that, when he first met Mrs. Eddy, she seemed so like a child in her thought, it seemed hardly possible that she could be the famous author of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Perhaps he did not fully comprehend at the time that the truth which Mrs. Eddy expressed was reflected from God. Furthermore, the state of consciousness requisite to reflect divine Mind is far from what one would imagine who knows little of spiritual facts. It is a truism that God writes on a blank blackboard.”
After reading this I had to wonder if the girl in Illustration 7 was not an exact description of Mary Baker Eddy. She was one of the first to admit that she had to study the Textbook, because she did not write it through personal sense or by mortal mind. She was God’s Scribe. I am willing to admit that I am wrong in thinking that the girl represents Martha Jones-Smith. But could it be possible that the girl represents all those who reach the same spiritual understanding that Mary Baker Eddy demonstrated during most of her time during her God-crown mission? Martha Jones-Smith, as written above, could actually be the third loaf of bread for this type of demonstration. Especially when we take into consideration that there actually are three angels if we accept the Side of Life illustration with its two angels and the Side of Light illustration of the girl as the third angel.
In Gilman’s book, page 30, is written, “…worked this week on the child, reading Science and Health to the old gentleman, illustrating the thought that in Science childhood teaches age because worldly wisdom counts nothing in Truth.”
Above are the three windows at the head of Mother’s Room. The first is the “Star of Bethlehem/Boston” (Life). On the Major Pyramid Matrix of Truth it correlates with “Christmas Morn.” Is not the Star of this window actually like the two angels in “Christmas Morn”? The center window (Truth) correlates with the capstone illustration (the Sixth one) in Christ and Christmas. And we have a perfect correlation with the window on the right and the Seventh (Love) illustration “Suffer [Permit] the Children to Come Unto Me.”
“Christmas Morn” must be the healing of “Christmas Eve”. In a letter of 1903 to some students Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “May this dear Christmas season be to you a Christ risen, a morn, the break of day. There is nothing jubilant attached to the birth of a mortal – that suffers and pays the penalty of his parents’ misconception of man and of God’s creation. But there is a joy unutterable in knowing that Christ had no birth, no death, and that we may find in Christ, in the true sense of being, life apart from birth, sorrow, sin and death. O may your eyes not be holden, but may you discern spiritual what is our Redeemer.”
The two angels in “Christmas Morn” represent the manhood and womanhood of God’s appearing. They are the “complete witnessing to the Christ in its seamless garment.” The female angel is watching while the male angel is praying. It is the female angel that is holding Science and Health. Their garment is seamless and it is one garment as it clothes both witnesses. There is also the remnant seed present riding in the angel’s train. This train is spiritual, unlike the train found in “Christmas Eve.”
The path of Christian Science can only be traveled when we recognize the Two Witnesses. When this recognition comes a new era will dawn. Unfortunately, this recognition has not as yet come to the whole world. “It will be truly a ‘blest Christmas Morn.’ These two angels represent Truth as revealed by His Two Witnesses.” I tend to feel that the male angel represents Truth and the female angel represents Love – or Michael and Gabriel. “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought, and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.” (Revelation 12:7, 8)
“The Old Testament assigns to the angels, God’s divine messages, different offices. Michael’s characteristic is spiritual strength. He leads the hosts of heaven against the power of sin, Satan, and fights the holy wars. Gabriel has the more quiet task of imparting a sense of the ever-presence of ministering Love. These angels deliver us from the depths. Truth and Love come nearer in the hour of woe, when strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God. The Gabriel of His presence has no contests. To infinite, ever-present Love, all is Love, and there is no error, no sin, sickness, nor death. Against Love, the dragon warreth not long, for he is killed by the divine Principle. Truth and Love prevail against the dragon because the dragon cannot war with them. Thus endeth the conflict between the flesh and Spirit.” (S&H 566:29-567:13)
This explains why Christmas Morn “is oval and nears the stage of complete perfection realized in ‘Christian Unity.’ Gabriel symbolizes the feminine idea of Love. Michael symbolizes the masculine idea of Truth. Thus, together these angels represent the risen Christ, as revealed through His Two Witnesses.” Could it be possible that in addition to these angels representing the two witnesses of Revelation 11 that these two angels also represent Mary Baker Eddy’s own manhood and womanhood? That she is Michael, the angel of Revelation 10 (as the woman depicted in the center window above and the woman in the Sixth illustration for Truth “Christian Science Healing”), and Gabriel, the woman God-crowned of Revelation 12 (as the window clothed with the Daystar in “Suffer the Children”)? I think that this is more likely, as this illustration comes after “Seeking and Finding” and is on the same level as “Suffer the Children…”
“My angels are exalted thoughts, appearing at the door of some sepulchre [A sepulchre is seen beneath the two angels, but it is cracked, it has opened up], in which human belief has buried its fondest earthly hopes [These hopes can escape if the tomb is cracked open.]. With white fingers [the Third Degree] they point upward [This explain Mary Baker Eddy’s hands in the illustration “Christian Science Healing”.] to a new and glorified trust, to higher ideals of life and its joys. Angels are God’s representatives. These upward-soaring beings never lead towards self, sin, or materiality, but guide to the divine Principle of all good, whither every real individuality, image, or likeness of God, gathers.” (S&H 229) Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy are God’s representatives – “one that represents another as successor or heir” (from Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary) – a Christ successor or a Christ heir. Jesus words “Before Abraham was I am.” are about the Christ idea (the I am), not a physical man (the I am not).
When Mary Baker Eddy’s accomplishments begin to burst forth and her place in Bible prophecy (the I am) is recognized, then mankind receives her angelic message, “The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding [the Third Degree] and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God’s day, and ‘there shall be no night there.’” (S&H 584) Is this Day not the Sabbath of Genesis 2:1-3? This Day of the Woman’s remnant seed is approaching its complete fulfillment and is glimpsed in this illustration. An oval is a symbol for Womanhood. “That is why it is oval. It is nearing the completion or full recognition of the Two Witness[es] given in ‘Christian Unity.’” The dome and the two angels are located in the firmament.
“Firmament. Spiritual understanding; the scientific line of demarcation between Truth and error, between Spirit and so-called matter.” (S&H 586)
Those who follow the masculine and feminine appearing of the Christ, Truth, are referred to as the woman’s remnant seed. If you look at the illustration you will recognize the Two Witnesses’ remnant seed for they are riding along in the angel’s robe (the mantle), in their train (of thought).
“There is an effort on the part of the remnant to escape sensuality in its many gravitational forms. When we gather ourselves into this garment of the Christ, we are lifted above materiality. However, the serpent would attempt to seduce us earthward.”
After Mary Baker Eddy explains angels in S&H 299 she follows with, “Knowledge gained from material sense is figuratively represented in Scripture as a tree, bearing the fruits of sin, sickness, and death. Ought we not then to judge the knowledge thus obtained to be untrue and dangerous, since ‘the tree is known by its fruit’?”
“And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophecy a thousand two hundred and threescore days [forty-two months, “is a conventional apocalyptic period for the domination of evil. It does not continue forever. It can be completely put out. An incomplete number in Hebrew literature.” (STUDIES IN THE APOCALYPSE OF JOHN OF PATMOS; Edyth Armstrong Hoyt, p. 68 footnote.) I take this to mean that the two witnesses prophecy until evil is completely put out or annihilated.] clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth [there are candles on the heads of both angels]…And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them, and kill them…And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. [This merry-making and gift-giving is portrayed in the previous picture “Christmas Eve”] And after three days and an half [“after this testing time” (Hoyt)] the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them…And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.” (Revelation 11)
The Two Witnesses have risen up in “Christmas Morn.” The author of the manuscript feels that they broke free from the sepulcher below them. The sepulcher is where the sensuous world thought believed they had buried the Two Witnesses – rather kept their true identities and true natures obscure and unknown to the world by tricking the world into misunderstanding their true Being. Lies and false propaganda have gone forth about the Two Witnesses like a red dragon’s flood. But they have resurrected out of that sepulcher, the rock of coldness and stubbornness that fights Truth’s advanced appearing. The hard rock has been rolled away. The woman’s remnant seed, with their understanding of Jesus’ place and mission and Mary’s place and mission help them to ascend.
“Are we still searching diligently to find where the young child lies, and are we satisfied to know that our sense of Truth is not demoralized, finitized, cribbed, or cradled, but has risen to grasp the spiritual idea unenvironed by materiality? Can we say with the angels today: ‘He is risen; he is not here; behold the place where they laid him’? Yes, the real Christian Scientist can say his Christ is risen and is not the material Christ of creeds, but is Truth, even as Jesus declared; and the sense of Truth of the real Christian Scientist is spiritualized to behold this Christ, Truth, again healing the sick and saving sinners. The mission of our Master was to all mankind, and included the very hearts that rejected it — that refused to see the power of Truth in healing.” (Miscellany,122:18)
“Christian Science is dawning upon a material age. The great spiritual facts of being, like rays of light, shine in the darkness, though the darkness, comprehended them not, may deny their reality.” (S&H 546) “These rays, spiritual facts of being, are clearly shown in this picture, and are being witnessed by the two witnesses. Notice the rays coming from the dome of The Mother Church extension, which at the time this illustration came out was about thirteen years in coming.
“The river in this picture, Judge Hanna tells us, is Euphrates.”
“Euphrates (river). Divine Science encompassing the universe and man; the true idea of God; a type of the glory which is to come; metaphysics taking the place of physics; the reign of righteousness. The atmosphere of human belief before it accepts sin, sickness, or death; a state of mortal thought, the only error of which is limitation; finity; the opposite of infinity.” (S&H 585:16)
On this side [I do not know what the author means by “this side,”] of the bridge is “A state of mortal thought, the only error of which is ‘limitation; finity; the opposite of infinity.” (S&H 585) This “false concept of Euphrates is running along side the tree of knowledge of good and evil [I am not sure which tree he is referring to as the tree of knowledge.], which is death and all the serpentine forms of error. One of the definitions of serpent serves to illustrate the point that the false sense of Euphrates is animal magnetism.”
“Serpent.…the first lie of limitation; finity.” (S&H 594; italics in both quotes are the author’s)
“On the other side of the bridge by the water are the twelve sheep, eleven white and one black.” Actually, I count twelve white sheep and one black sheep, if it really is a sheep, it could be a bush. If it is a black sheep it would make sense that there are thirteen sheep because there are actually thirteen tribes as presented in Numbers — the twelve (white) sheep circle around the four groupings of Levi (the black sheep) while the tribe of Levi (the priest tribe) circles around the Holy Tabernacle of God. The sheep are on the lower right side of the illustration by a broken fence. “The tree of life is in the midst of the garden.” I assume he is speaking about the largest tree in the illustration, just above the sheep. The sheep symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel. “The twelve tribes of Israel with all mortals, — separated by belief from man’s divine origin and the true idea, — will through much tribulation yield to the activities of the divine Principle of man in the harmony of Science.” (S&H 562)
The tree of life is found in the midst (the center) of the Garden of Eden, in other words, it is found in the center of a sense of pleasure in matter, yet it is in the firmament as well (like the angels are). So its true fruitage is too high for mortal minded man to reach it. I actually like this explanation, especially if the tree of knowledge and the tree of life are actually the same tree. If they were the same tree then we could say that the lower fruit, the fruit that is low enough for mortal minded men to pick and eat, is the fruit of physical knowledge (or physical science) of good and evil – that which says that good and evil are mixed up together in one material creation. And that the higher fruit, which is in the firmament of spiritual understanding, is the fruit from the tree of life – that of divine Science – that knows only good exists. Or the fruit could be explained this way, that when misunderstood and seen from mortal mind’s viewpoint the fruit is of the knowledge of good and evil, and when the fruit is spiritually understood and seen from divine Mind’s viewpoint the fruit is the fruit of life. In one instance the fruit seems to curse and bring about eventual death and in the other instance the fruit seems to bless and bring about eternal life. We could say that the tree is one tree, however, depending upon the degree of mental activity that man is at is how he mentally digests the fruit from the tree. The lowest fruit would be that of the First Degree. And as humans of the Second Degree we often eat from the lowest mind set that says physical science is reality and truth. The highest fruit would be that of the Third Degree. And as humans of the Second Degree we eventually eat from the highest divine Mind that says Science itself is reality and Truth. When we eat of the tree of life we are one with God and we manifest the human and divine coincidence. Mor[t]als cannot receive the Truth unless they recognize the Two Witnesses, get aboard their train of thought and become followers of Truth.
As I mentioned above, I spoke of the black sheep (if there really is one) as the tribe of Levi because priestcraft is rooted to ecclesiastical despotism. Ecclesiastical despotism incorporates animal magnetism (Dan) in its practice. In this way, I can concede the following. The one black sheep represents the fifth son of Jacob – Dan. It is interesting to speak of this particular son at this level because we are on the fifth level (the forth step up the pyramid).
“Dan (Jacob’s son). Animal magnetism; so-called mortal mind controlling mortal mind [ecclesiastic despotism]; error, working out the designs of error; one belief preying upon another.” (S&H 583:26)
The evil that animal magnetism is what “we must destroy before the witnesses can be recognized and healing come to humanity.” In Revelation 7:5-8 Levi is replaced by Manasseh. In other words, Dan, animal magnetism, has been forgotten. The author tells us, “Dan must be replaced by Manasseh [Joseph’s first son].” Manasseh means, “who makes to forget; causing forgetfulness; out of the forgotten; from oblivion.” (The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, p. 423) In other words Manasseh enables us to forget that which is not real about ourselves; it helps us to forget that which animal magnetism [Dan] tells us is real. I would also like to say that animal magnetism [Dan] would try and get us to misinterpret Manasseh in regards to the Two Witnesses. It tries to get us to forget the Truth about them; it even tries to get us to forget them in our demonstrations, testimonies, lectures, etc.! “Manasseh represents understanding, and Ephraim stands for will. The understanding here denotes denial, the negative activity of mind. The will is the positive or affirmative quality, the affirmative attitude of mind.” (Ibid) Christian Scientists are taught in class instruction to deny animal magnetism (Dan), the things belonging to material life, and to affirm Truth, all that is of God.
I have also come to realize that the correct spiritual translation of Dan is Daniel “righteous judgment”. Righteous judgment is Christian Science Treatment while Dan is animal magnetic mental malpractice.
I am not opposed to thinking (if there is one) that Levi is the black sheep of animal magnetism because ecclesiastical despotism’s pal and friend is animal magnetism. There can be no debate that by the time that Jesus came to fulfill his God-crown mission that the Levite priests were on the wrong path. They were more concerned with the Letter of the Law than they were with the Spirit of the Law. The priests craved power and prestige amongst the other two Hebrew tribes (Judah and Benjamin). The ten lost tribes of Israel were gone from the Holy Land by the time Jesus came to fulfill his mission.
“Notice that the two witnesses are watching and praying that mankind might awake from its [Adam] dream of pleasure in matter, and follow them faithfully – as these in their train have already done through vigorous strugglings with the serpent [red dragon].”
“Sheep. Innocence; inoffensiveness; those who follow their leader.” (S&H 594) Notice that Mary Baker Eddy says “those who follow their leader”!
There is one Shepherd and one fold. Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of Christian Scientists, said, “Let them seek the lost sheep who having strayed from the true fold, have lost their great Shepherd [Leader] and yearn to find living pastures and rest beside still waters.”
There is no doubt that the thirteen sheep represent the restored Israel – where Israel and Judea are reunited as one in the United States of America (originally formed by the thirteen colonies that became States). The twelve white sheep also represent the twelve stars to the woman’s crown of rejoicing.
The author returns to the positive definition of Euphrates saying that once “we cross the bridge over Euphrates into metaphysics, we immediately see the luxuriant growth to the right of the bridge, but then we have to prove it all. Ahead are the difficulties and obstructions that would destroy our vision of the dawn of the Day. The path becomes narrower as it flows on. At its start it is sin, depravity, birth, age, false education, death, etc., but upon crossing the bridge it immediately becomes narrow.”
Because the path and the river both form the shape of an ‘S’ I see the path and the river as the X-stream of Science – coordinating with the oval shape of the illustration – matches with the Skylight Window in the Edifice Auditorium. (By the way, an oval is a feminine symbol.)
“The crossing into metaphysics (emphasis added) is at first a sweat taste in our mouth, but the bitterness to digest it is to come. In Mrs. Eddy’s definition of ‘Year’ as a space of time, we have the wrong definition of Euphrates (limitation and finity). We also have this statement: ‘One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life [“Christmas Morn” represents Life] and Love [“Suffer the Children” represents Love], is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death [the sepulcher] and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown.’ That is the bridge we cross over. The path in this picture shows the destination, and what is to be overcome before the destination is reached.”
I have already covered this territory and feel that the author is incorrect when he says, “Notice that there are the letters C.S. in the middle of the picture. The path is Christian and the river is Science.” The path is actually an S if you look at the majority of the path and the river is really only an S on the right side of the path. Both S shapes cross each other and this is why I refer to it as the X-stream of Science.
“Judge Hanna tells us that the dark steeple to the left of the path is Roman Catholicism, which would attempt to persuade us off the path and away from the recognition of Mary Baker Eddy’s place, symbolized by her childhood here on the right of the path. Once we are safely past Romanism, or in other words, understand Mrs. Eddy’s place in prophecy, we are safe. Romanism will attempt by every means possible to keep you and the world from the rays of light.” “Christian Science is dawning upon a material age. The great spiritual facts of being, like rays of light, shine in the darkness, though the darkness, comprehending them not, may deny their reality.” (S&H 546)
We are being handled by Romanism if we refuse to recognize Mary Baker Eddy as the angel with the little open book, as the second witness, as the woman God-crowned, and as the second coming of Christ. “Alert Christian Scientists must handle this unseen mental argument. Our Cause will not prosper until this specific hatred against our Leader is handled.”
Christian Scientists must handle the tempting arguments that come forth from the red dragon of Romanism. They are subtle suggestions and quiet arguments that entice us to turn away from Mary Baker Eddy. “The ‘murky clouds’ that pursue the Christ idea are thus broken up; and the rays of light, the great spiritual facts of being, shine forth to illumine the world on the Day of divine Science, the Day of the Woman, the Day of the Dove.
The original Star Trek series had an episode titled Day of the Dove. In it was the crew of the Enterprise in an ongoing war against Klingon warriors. What promoted and fed this war and kept it going was an entity. When either side manifested emotions of evil the entity would grow stronger (it became red; red in the Bible is always evil). Even though death seemed real the fact came out that nobody was dieing! There bodies were restored, for error can never destroy eternal Soul. The Enterprise crew was symbolic of Christian Scientists while the Klingons were symbolic of the clinging to ecclesiastical despotism – or Romanism. The key to ending the war was when James (Jacob “Inspiration; the revelation of Science, in which the so-called material senses yield to the spiritual sense of Life and Love.” [S&H 589:5]) Tiberius (a river of mental thought) Kirk (church dweller) unmasked animal magnetism to the Klingon’s wife (womanhood). The wife’s name had the same meaning of Mary. It was through Mary that her husband (male ego) was willing to listen to Kirk (Science) and recognize error for what it was. Then they ordered their crews (congregations) to lay down their weapons. The final blow to the red dragon was when all of them began to laugh and be of good cheer. Love was expressed. This drove out the error.

THE SIDE OF LIGHT – THE TONE OF LOVE with

Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God. St. Paul.
“How are we to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? The Master tells us we must become as little children. Only the child-like in thought can recognize the Two Witnesses, accept Christian Science, witness Christian Science healing, and perceive the Day of the Woman. The guileless, the pure, the loving, the humble, are the ones who recognize their Leader, and are willing to see her place in [Bible] prophecy.
“As this picture is revealed through ‘Christmas Morn,’ we again find the definition for sheep: ‘Innocence; inoffensiveness; those who follow their leader.’ (S&H 554)
“Self-esteem, self-love, hatred, guile, dishonesty, etc., are the sins of the carnal mind, the elements of Dan, that will keep Christian Scientists from accepting their Leader’s place.
“This picture is coupled with ‘Christmas Morn’ because it indicates the level of thought we must attain to be able to follow the Two Witnesses.” In this illustration the Christian Science Textbook is an open book, it is spiritually understood by the girl sitting in the foursquare chair sitting inside the pyramid of light from the Morning Star. This means that Venus has an appearing after the Life of Mary Baker Eddy. These transits, when Venus is clothed with the sun, take place on the two following dates – June 8, 2004 and June 5, 2012. This illustration is a prophecy of the Seventh Day of Love – the Sabbath – when the Third Advent of Christ takes place. This illustration depicts Martha, the name Mary Baker Eddy gave to the Third Advent of Christ, or the third coming of Christ. “The child-like thought is searching; and this searching is not going unrewarded, as you will notice the radiance in her face. Her shoes symbolize mortality, but her age symbolizes innocence and inoffensiveness, which is the only way out of the mortal dream. The understanding of the Christ is given only to babes.” It is also of interest, at least to me, that the word babe refers to a woman. The babes are spiritually-minded enough to perceive the message and the messenger. “Pure thinking understands what mature human wisdom does not comprehend.” Because the girl’s feet rest upon the rung (Jacob’s ramp) of the chair (Mother’s high chair) her mental thought is above materiality (to a certain degree – in the Second Degree). Martha has studied the seven tones for God, the divine calculus, and the four levels of Science. She was unafraid to turn to “unauthorized literature”. She was quite a young woman when she heard her aunt speaking about the works of John W. Doorly. Her aunt was speaking to Martha’s mother. While the mother was unable to easily understand what was being presented to her the daughter caught on quite quickly. The girl’s feet, spiritual understanding, was supported on the same level presented with “Christ Healing” and “Truth versus Error.” This girl is the same girl looking out the window in illustration 10. She understands, like the title of the book’s cover in “Suffer the Children” that “Science and Health” is “Key to the Scriptures.” She understands that the whole book, not just chapters 15-17, is the “Key to the Bible.” The Bible that rests on the table is closed. To Old Theology the Bible is a closed book and the man’s feet rest upon the floor, on materiality, like the female practitioner in “Treating the Sick”. Martha represents the best of the second degree reaching forth for spiritual understanding. Her chair is stable and has a sure footing – a sure foundation. The perspective on the rungs of the chair seem to be off. However, this chair was drawn this way on purpose. The rungs represent a ramp, Jacob’s Ladder, that would wind upward around a pyramid (notice the girl is in a pyramid of light shining down from the Morning Star – Venus – for the girl is the vessel for the spiritual light during the Seventh Day of Love). The rocker the man sits in goes back and forth getting nowhere at all. “His vision is blurred [he sees through a glass darkly], inadequate, and he thinks he needs ceremonies, creeds and dogmas, symbolized by glasses, to interpret the Scriptures, to view creation and to acknowledge the Christ idea. He must listen to the child-like, the pure in heart, to receive his healing. He must attain the humility, innocence and inoffensiveness, to do so. When the Morn of the Woman is revealed, then Old Theology will listen to the child-like.”
The manuscript’s author asks why it is a little girl in the illustration. He responds that a little girl is symbolic of the beginning of the Woman’s understanding. She is a type that has not been recognized in its maturity as yet [I feel this to be so because she will not be born until the 1950s]. “Generic man is symbolized by a woman.
“Old Theology will listen to this type of womanhood, though not yet in its mature state. It is a recognition of her divine purpose.”
The poem for this illustration speaks about the pale star of early Christianity, that it is more visible now. “It has become full orbed with the revelation of the seven synonyms found in our Textbook. The guiding star of being has shone and is shining. It reveals infinite life, the vitality of Christian Science healing, expressing itself in light and understanding.”
“Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God: First, in light; second, in reflection; third, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness.” (S&H 503) The light of this illustration is most visible. The reflection is seen in Martha’s face; it is the reflection of the Word bouncing off the book’s pages onto her face. The “Spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness” are seen when we recognize Mary Baker Eddy as the author or Revelator of divine Science. Then comes Christian Science healing. The author of this manuscript feels that the girl is Mary Baker Eddy “as a girl-child.” I am not so sure that the author is incorrect, especially if Hanna made it clear that Mary Baker Eddy spoke of the girl as being herself. But I am not sure that she did speak about this. If she did, and if the girl does represent her receptive thought, then perhaps this illustration points to her at the time during her adult life when she actually read her Textbook from cover to cover. I believe this took place in 1907.
The Biblical verse that correlates with this section of the poem refers to the priest of Salem [peace] – Melchisedek. Abraham had dealings with Melchisedek and it seems that this priest was a forerunner of the Christ-idea. The true priest is Christ-likeness, that which is child-like and pure in heart. This child-likeness is the “total opposite of Old Theology who, for thousands of years, has been dwelling in darkness, the darkness of false manhood. Witness the dark clothing on the old man.” As mentioned earlier, the Bible is a closed book to this type of thought, it cannot understand it except through God’s Womanhood; “and she is found in her writings as being read by the child-like. The true priesthood is attained to the degree that we approximate the purity of thought of this little one – in other words, obtain an understanding of the woman’s mission and light, although at first it may not be the full recognition.” We must understand that the real Christ idea that is manifested as Mary Baker Eddy on earth from July 16, 1821 to December 3, 1910 was never born of material parents, nor did this spiritual idea ever die.
When Mary Baker was a small child she expressed such purity, innocence, and inoffensiveness that was expressed without measure. It was this retention of purity that enabled the consecrated one to give us Truth via the Christian Science Textbook.
Healing comes in Christian Science through the child-like consciousness and the recognition of Mary Baker Eddy’s place. Teaching, lectures, church work, and advertising are poor substitutes for purity. It is purity that will bring forth healing.
Mr. McKenzie was a member of Mary Baker Eddy’s household. He wanted her to publish her book as seen in the seventh illustration – Science and Health Key to the Scriptures. Her reply to him was, “No, Will dear, the world isn’t ready for that yet.” At that time she knew she could not force this correct title on world thought, but she was able to hint at it in her illustration. To the unenlightened it would just appear that the title was different because of a lack of space. “This is the only place Mrs. Eddy ever allowed ‘with’ to be omitted. She is telling us that Christian Scientists must recognize this fact and appreciate Science and Health much more than it is now being appreciated.”
“On one occasion Mrs. Eddy called me into her room and I found her considering a change in the title of her book, Science and Health. Instead of having it ‘Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,’ she proposed making it read, ‘Science and Health, Key to the Scriptures.’ She asked me what I thought of the idea and if I understood the import of it. I told her that I did indeed, and that I thought it would be a splendid change as it would at once convey to people the thought that her book was the ‘key’ which unlocked the Scriptures, and not just chapters 15, 16, 17 as would appear from the inscription ‘Key to the Scriptures,’ found on page 499 of her book as it stood at that time. Mrs. Eddy was quite pleased with the idea and spoke favorably of it. She talked it over with her publishers and explained that she would like to make this change in the title of her book, provided it did not in any way conflict with her copyrights. Mr. Stewart, her publisher at that time, made the inquiry from Mrs. Eddy’s Boston lawyer, and the word came back that they would not advise her to do this, as it might materially affect the copyrights of her book. Thus our Leader abandoned one of the inspired thoughts that came to her, and which would have enlarged considerably the thought of all Christian Scientists regarding her book Science and Health.” (Memoirs of Mrs. Eddy, by Adam Dickey [I believe this is the title of Mr. Dickey’s book, but I am not 100% sure.])
“Mrs. Eddy also asked Mr. William Nicholas Miller in London to try to get the textbook published in England with this omission (with), but she met the same caution about her copyright lawyers as she did in this country.”
In back of the rocking chair is a grandfather clock. This takes us back to “Seeking and Finding” where the grandmother clock is in back of our Grand Mother Mary Baker Eddy. The time on the clock pointed us to Revelation 12:1-5, likewise the grandfather clock points us to Revelation 5:1-5. These Bible verses speak about the Lion of the Tribe of Judah and the Lamb of God. Mary Baker Eddy is this spiritual idea, for it is she that is given permission to open the seven seals to the Bible.
“And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to look thereon…And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” (Revelation 5:1-5) It is the woman God-crowned that is able to open up the seven seals of the Bible. The female representative for the “Christ has prevailed to open the pages of the book and have them revealed. Only as we become as little children can we remove the signet of error from our own consciousness, because only then can we understand Christian Science, experience healing, and enter heaven.” Notice it is the Lamb of God. A lamb is a baby or young sheep, not a ewe or a ram.
Because the Bible is a closed book to Old Theology he gets old, time is behind his belief systems. In Revelation 10:5 the words written by John are: “And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that giveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer.” “Time. Mortal measurements; limits, in which are summed up all human acts, thoughts, beliefs, opinions, knowledge; matter; error; that which begins before, and continues after, what is termed death, until the mortal disappears and spiritual perfection appears.” (S&H 595:17) The clock of time is not behind the little girl; the windowpanes are behind her. Mary Baker Eddy is the windowpane. There is no limitation or finity, the false definition of Euphrates, in this illustration. The little girl fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy that a little child, the Christ-idea, shall lead them.
John W. Doorly and his students were Christian Scientists that understood the “Key” and what it was. They figured out the Network Matrix (similar to the window in the illustration but with sixteen squares instead of nine). Doorly is also responsible for the Golden Candlestick Matrix. W. Gordon Brown came up with the Unity Matrix, but he never applied it to the chapters of the Textbook like I have. Yet these brilliant students of Christian Science failed in one aspect – although they were most grateful to Mary Baker Eddy they did not make a big deal about her being the second coming of Christ. They chickened out by saying the second coming is Christian Science. This is one thing that I differ with in their teachings. The second thing where I differ is that they felt that John W. Doorly was Mary Baker Eddy’s successor because of the timing of his mission. But God assured me that he came too soon. I am Mary Baker Eddy’s successor because I understand what Doorly and his crew accomplished and it did open up Science and Health for me. I am her successor because I was born in the 1950s. Just because Mary Baker Eddy said that it would be about 50 years (from 1901) before her successor would come, this did not mean that that person would be all grown up at that time. She meant that her successor would be born at that time. And when she said her successor would be a “man” I think she really meant that her successor would be a “mind” that was capable of applying the “Key” and explaining it all without any problems. Martha would be the girl who would follow the rule, “Spiritual teaching must always be by symbols.” This is the Key rule to opening up the Bible text. But the other Key, and it is the most important Key of them all, is the fact that it is called the Key of David (beloved). Who is God’s beloved one? It is Mary Baker Eddy, the Lamb of God. Because Doorly failed to grasp this fact is the reason why he was not Mary Baker Eddy’s successor.
“Immediately after the chapter on ‘Recapitulation’ in Science and Health, we have the title page, ‘Key to the Scriptures,’ and under it the quote: ‘These things saith He that is holy, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth, and shutteth and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.’ Revelation.”’
“To the Christ idea, it is an open book, unsealed.”
Not only is the light from the Day Star coming through the windowpanes but it shines through the sheer curtains which symbolize the consciousness of the world that has been leavened by Christian Science and the recognition of the Woman. “The world’s thinking is being parted for the Christ light; it no longer obscures the brightness of divine Light. Mortal mind is therefore giving up its false claims and beliefs.”
The Prophet Star of Truth is clear and angular because the Textbook becomes the light of the world. “God has set His signet upon Science, making it coordinate with all that is real and only with that which is harmonious and eternal.” (S&H 472)
Christian Scientists must ask if they are seeking to build bigger churches? Are they wanting nicer homes, more comfortable bank accounts with much money? Do they want to have many clothes in the closet, plenty of food, and all the accompanying pleasures of this world? Are they using Christian Science for mortal gain or ease in matter? If so, this is not Christian Science. We must seek His righteousness first, then we are becoming little children, and indeed all will be added unto us naturally and necessarily. Often we may want what we really do not need! And after we get it we find out that having it is not all that enjoyable.
Not mentioned in the manuscript is the shape of a bush or tree outside the window. It appears to be a dragon looking inside at the young girl. The girl is safe from the red dragon’s attacks because Science and Health protects her.
“The Two Witnesses are recognized in ‘Christmas Morn’ as the light shines forth. We must become as little children in order to enter this scientific heaven. These two elements firmly held in consciousness, the Message and the Messenger, lead us up to the capstone of Truth with the sixth illustration ‘Christian Science Healing.’”
We are now ready to move up to the Capstone, take the Sixth Step up.
