Animal Magnetism Unmasked

ANIMAL MAGNETISM UNMASKED

“Animal Magnetism Unmasked” is the shortest chapter in Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.  The book’s first edition was in 1875.  She was unable to get it published until she stopped resisting the urge not to write about animal magnetism.  She called this chapter “Demonology” and it was quite lengthy.  After she had finished the chapter’s manuscript she decided to take it to her publisher.  While at the train station they met each other (it was not an arranged meeting), she handed him the manuscript and he went back and finished publishing the little open book of Revelation 10.

“Seeking and Finding” – colorized by me

Mary Baker Glover did not want to write about her wayward student Richard Kennedy (she never mentioned his name), nor did she want to write about evil.  I think she probably felt that evil was not real so why write about it and speak of it as if it were something.  But she had to write on the subject in order to unmask it and prove its nothingness and its impotence to the world.
I have often wondered if I am correct in writing about the Boston hierarchy (the Board of Directors) as I do.  Am I accepting evil as a reality by doing so?  I realize that error must be exposed, uncovered, unhidden before it can be destroyed (become what it is – nothing).  But I also think that by reading about all the bad things that have taken place and all the evil things that have been rehearsed and rewritten in my writings that I have taken it in and to some degree have accepted the reality of evil.
Most certainly we are constantly hearing the serpent whispering in our ears.  Some examples are television, movies, and the news (whether it is on paper, the Internet, or television).  Even our daily conversations make a reality of evil through gossip, or even speaking about someone who is ill.
Some mild forms of mesmerism (or hypnotism) are in the form of commercials.  You are being sold a product, and they will do anything to convince you to try their product, even if it is harmful to you.  Example:  medicine commercials.
You happen to be watching a show and a commercial advertising medicine for some disease airs.  Now, many of these diseases that have been spoken about I have never even heard of before the commercial aired.  This does a harmful thing to people, first off it introduces the error, or evil, that this disease exists, secondly they listen to the description of this new disease and then they begin to analyze their body to see if it complains of any of these symptoms being described.  Then another thing happens, because this disease is being spoken about it is now put in a person’s computer (brain), and they cannot seem to delete it even if they try to!  The next bad thing is that the medical people CLAIM that their drug will cure you if you have this disease.  Let me make one thing clear, there has never been any disease cured by any sort of medicine (even if you believe medicine has cured a disease).  Why is this so?  Medicine has no power to do anything.  The only power it has, if it does in deed have power, comes from mortal mind, or world belief saying, “Such and such a drug will cure such and such a disease.”  I call this faith healing, however in this case, the faith is placed in the god that is medicine.  Finally, the last evil thing these commercials do are to warn you about any possible side effects the drug may have!  So, more evil suggestions are being streamed into your conscious mind.  Have you really listened to these side effects?  They sound worse than the disease the drug is supposed to be curing you of!  Who in their right mind, or even left mind, would want that?
Yes, I hear you.  It is because the person is suffering so much from pain that they are willing to try anything to alleviate the pain.  And if they are one of the lucky ones (the larger percentage) they will not suffer from any of the side effects.
Yet, materia medica is a guessing game for medical people.  One drug reacts differently on different people.  The medical “professionals” (as they like to call themselves) do not understand why a drug reacts differently on different people.  The reason why they cannot figure this out is because they are looking for a physical cause to differing physical effects and they have not taken into account the mental atmosphere of the patients.  It is not because of the patients’ body chemistry that the drugs react differently from person to person; it is because of the differing mental atmospheres that the drug seems to act chemically different from person to person.
Another form of mesmerism comes from watching violent movies, or movies that frighten you (like monster and slasher movies).  Whether you want to admit it or not, these types of emotions are harmful.  Even cop shows present one form of violence week after week.  And then there are the medical dramas literally spewing forth blood and guts!
The news presents 99% bad news.  And if something horrible has happened it is like it is all they can talk about all night, or all week long, and on every channel they can manage to get the bad news to broadcast it.  If someone famous dies Entertainment Tonight goes on about it for months!  Why?  When in reality (God’s reality) there is no death!  Why do the news people prefer to report bad news instead of good news?  They probably think that their ratings will go down if they begin telling only good news.  But think about it, if all you hear is bad news you literally become depressed and you begin to think about how horrible people are, how horrible the world is, and why go on being a good person yourself?  Why not go out and cheat others, rob others, etc.  Who cares about the Ten Commandments anymore, they are so out dated!  But they are not out dated; we need them so long as animal magnetism seems to be present in our lives.
And we continue to watch Television and go to the movies because we like to be entertained.  But what is the cost of this entertainment?

THE SERPENT’S WHEEL MUST BE TRANSLATED BY THE DIVINE CALCULUS

On July 7, 2012 I woke up with a clear understanding that the religion of astrology was animal magnetism.  This came to me because I had been working with Ezekiel’s Wheel.  In chapter one of Ezekiel the word of the Lord comes to Ezekiel when he is in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar.  The Chaldeans practiced the religion of astrology.[1]  Chebar means “strength” so it was the strong river of thought consciousness of the zodiac that Ezekiel is assigned to translate back to Science.  The word zodiac means “carved figures;[2] zoion living being, figure; akin to Gk zoe life – more at quick.”[3]  I have also read that zodiac means a belt of animals (most of the constellations for the zodiac are made up of animals).  It was this false belief in animal life, or material life, that Ezekiel was to translate, or give the Spiritual Translation to.  And he was shown how to do this with the vision of the wheel that translated the zodiac wheel.
Likewise, before the prophet of Ezekiel, we have the patriarch Abraham.  The city that he is to leave, when directed by God to do so, is a city that practices the religion of astrology.  He is to leave the old belief that life exists in animal matter behind him and not return to it.  When he does this he and his seed are promised the Holy City (of our God), which is later named Jerusalem “the city of peace” which represents absolute Christian Science and Christian Science alternating between each other (for the chapter “Recapitulation”).

The Greek word “zoon” is used in Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4.  Zoon means, “living creatures.”  Ezekiel and John’s four living creatures have translated the four zodiac symbols back to God.  The four living creatures are given the names of lion (which was Leo), ox or bull (which was Taurus), the face of a man (which was Aquarius), and the flying eagle (which originally was Libra and Scorpio).  Mary Baker Eddy, in “The Apocalypse” gives us the true identity of these “living creatures” and calls them the divine calculus (divine reckoning) of the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and (depending upon which wheel city she is speaking of) divine Science or Christian Science.  Once the true wheel for the divine calculus is understood the astrological wheel becomes nullified (powerless) because animal magnetism is no more.  The circle of the serpent (the dragon’s sea) is no more.  As John put it, “there was no more sea.” (Rev. 21:1)  It is after there is no more sea that John continues on to describe Vision 7’s Holy City, which is the corresponding foundation stone to Vision 1’s circular throne of God that speaks of the zoon.
I have already gone into great detail of the Wheel in EZEKIEL’S WHEEL, but I would like to explain Vision 1 of Revelation, which begins with chapter 4.  Read the two in comparison and you will notice they are really about the same thing.

Vision 1 – The Throne

Revelation 4:1 – After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven:  and the first voice which I heard was as it were a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter.

A Stargate (door) is opened to heaven, this is the Wheel Matrix, the same one that Ezekiel described in his chapter 1.  The first voice is divine Mind, and divine Mind has no choice but to blare and play the tones of the divine calculus.  To show things which must be hereafter means that John is shown a prophecy of the future.  “I will show you the realization of the fulfillment, dominion, and completeness of man.”[4]

Rev. 4:2 – And immediately I was in the spirit:  and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

John becomes spiritually alert when he sees the throne, the seat of power belonging to Principle.  Principle has complete divine dominion and authority.

Rev. 4:3 – And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone:  and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

The one with divine dominion and authority expresses infinite illumination and wisdom.  The rainbow represents the seven synonymous terms for God, but it also represents the Arch of the Covenant being fulfilled.  The emerald is Science, the expression of perfection.

Rev. 4:4 – And round about the throne were four and twenty seats:  and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

The throne is the hub of the wheel; it is the green square of Science where the “little open book” is seen in Window of the Open Book.  Around the seeds of Science is the Jerusalem artichoke sunflower.  Its twenty-four petals represent the twenty-four seats (questions) and the twenty-four elders (answers) for “Recapitulation.”  Their paragraph headings are crowns of gold (divinity).

Rev. 4:5 – And out of the throne proceeded lightenings and thunderings of voices:  and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

This is the Golden Candlestick (Minor Pyramid Matrix of Principle) as spoken of in Ezekiel!  The same symbols exist in both books.  The seven spirits of God are the seven synonyms – Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love.

Rev. 4:6 – And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal:  and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

What is this sea of glass like unto crystal if not a stained glass window?  The four living creatures are found working throughout the whole throne of God, as it is found doing in Window of the Open Book.  These eyes represent all-seeing or omniscience – the only Science there is.

Rev. 4:7 – And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had the face of a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

Another description given to the zoon is found in Edyth Armstrong Hoyt’s book Studies in the Apocalypse of John of Patmos.  “And the first living creature was like a lion, the expression of the all-power of good; and the second was like a calf, the expression of the all-intelligence of good:  and the third had the face of a man expressing the all-Mind of good:  and the fourth was like a flying eagle, the expression of the all-activity of good.” (page 153)  These four really are the Word, the Christ, Christianity, and Science.

Rev. 4:8 – And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within:  and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Which was, and is, and is to come.

“I realized that the four living creatures, like the six-winged cherubim on the top of the ark, represented wisdom and intelligence (intelligence and understanding are both used in this connection; see Deut. 4:6) at-one with Deity.  These creatures were all-seeing and all-acting and they sang the song of the prophet Isaiah.”[5]  This is all good, however, what are the six wings really all about?  If you take the matrix of the Wheel you can have four different sets of wings (Keystones), each set will have six Keystones or wings assigned to it.

Rev. 4:9-11 – And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power:  for thou has created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

As never before, John is conscious of the wholeness, fullness, and completeness of Principle operating in the universe as the divine calculus, which gives glory, honor, and thanks to God the eternal, the infinite Being, expressing dominion and power, and singing the song, the tones of Scientific progress.
Revelation’s first vision continues with the Lamb of God and the book, but I think you see how the wheel is actually the throne of God.  Which later on is described more fully in Vision 7 with the Holy City.

THE CHRIST AS THE WORD – the woman God-crowned uncovers, unmasks animal magnetism
“Animal Magnetism Unmasked” is the fifth chapter in the last edition of the Textbook (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures).  The Bible heading is:  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:  these are the things which defile a man. — Jesus.”
Mary Baker Eddy defines heart in the “Glossary” as:  “Mortal feelings, motives, affections, joys, and sorrows.”
Well, Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy did not have a very good opinion of the human heart; did they?  It is because they understood that they both understood all too well how the heart could change alliances at a moment’s notice.  Jesus had Judas and Mary Baker Glover had Richard Kennedy.
So let us speak about evil thoughts.  You may think, “Well, I do not think evil thoughts!”  But if you think that your friend is ill or sick you are thinking an evil thought.  If you think that your friend might die or is dead that too is an evil thought.  Stronger evil thoughts would have a feeling of malice or hate incorporated in them.  Feeling like you want revenge upon someone is an evil thought.  This is why “mortal feelings” is a part of the heart.  Taking revenge is a negative “motive,” an evil action to take.  And usually our “affections, joys, and sorrows” are what lie behind our motives for taking action against someone.
Murder, have you ever killed anyone?  Most people have not stabbed, shot, or hurt anyone, but there is such a thing as mental murder.  Even having negative thoughts about someone or even yourself is an act of mental murder.  This is very hard to avoid doing if you are asleep (mesmerized).  And one way to keep you honest, to keep you from trying to mentally murder someone else (by thinking bad thoughts about them, by feeling hate or malice toward them) would be the understanding that such mental actions take their toll upon you (if you are thinking such thoughts).  These thoughts are actually what lies behind sickness and disease.  Then there are malicious mental malpractioners who purposely want to do harm to another.  This is what Mary Baker Eddy and her students often experienced.  These people work with evil motives, think evil thoughts, and try to actually physically kill someone via mental means.  Most people have heard of voodoo.  Voodoo is a religion to some, but there are black or dark voodoo practitioners.  People may not believe in the power of voodoo, but many people do, and if something has belief behind it then it can be experienced  even if that experience is an illusion.
There is black witchcraft and white witchcraft.  Black witchcraft goes about bringing evil into the world.  There are even devil worshipers.  White witchcraft may seem more harmless, however, placing faith in material objects like crystals, herbs, etc. is not having faith in God.
In India there are men (and probably women) who use hypnotism and/or mesmerism on a daily bases.  They can make people believe they see and experience things that are not really happening.  There is one way, however, to keep from being mesmerized – to hold on to a principle of truth.  Some people have proved that if they held to the thought of “two plus two equals four” they were not mesmerized.
Mary Baker’s father had a mesmerist come to try and help Mary.  The man tried and tried to do his thing with her.  He finally said, “If I could just get her to go to sleep!”  But Mary Baker was too sharp and vigilant to fall asleep like Adam did.  The difference between this man and Doctor Quimby is that Mary (later on in life) allowed Quimby to practice his mesmerism on her because she wanted to be healed.
Most people think of adultery as being married and having sex with someone beside their spouse.  Another form of adultery is as Jesus put it, mentally thinking about someone else with desire and lust for them.  If a married man even looked upon another woman with lust, Jesus called this adultery.  The same goes for you women out there.
But what if there is more to adultery than just sex?  Adultery (called so because it is committed by adults) is making something impure.  The tree of good and evil is adultery because it mixes good (Spirit) with evil (matter).  This is the worst form of adultery there is.
Fornication is somewhat like adultery, only fornication has to do with the unmarried.  Homosexuals perform fornication.  Fornication could also take place between a married person and an unmarried person.
Theft is usually along the line of physical theft.  Today there are thieves that still another’s identity.  Can you take away another person’s ideas?  That would be plagiarism.  Copyright is a big issue today.  It is being taken too far.  People should give credit where credit is do, but is it really wrong to publish someone’s words if you are not getting any money from it?  Some people may think that I am a thief because I do not get legal permission from an author to copy his or her words.  But I do not ask for money, and if what I am writing is good should not all people be recipient of that good?  Why should the Board of Directors have copyright control over all Christian Science literature?  To me, this is wrong.
All theft comes from the fact that the thief believes that they are lacking good.  They believe this good is missing in their lives because they have been taught and trained that they are something called a “fallen man.”  Let us be honest here, could the fact that people turn to a life of crime actually be blamed upon religion?  I am beginning to think so.
False witness, hey, there is a Commandment about that one.  “Thou shalt not commit false witness against your neighbor.”  And believe me, you do not have to be in a courtroom to bear false witness.  If you take in the lies that your five physical senses tell you about someone then you are bearing false witness against that person.  If you believe your friend is sick you bear false witness.  If you believe that so and so is dead you are bearing false witness.  If you believe that you have a cold you are bearing false witness against yourself.  Yeah, it is true.
One day I felt like I was coming down with a cold.  I happened to read the Ten Commandments, and it came to me that I was bearing false witness against myself in believing that I was ill with a cold!  It came to me that I could not do this because, “Thou [that is me] shalt not [cannot]) bear false witness against your neighbor [or yourself].”  After receiving these ideas all symptoms of cold vanished.  It is impossible to believe a lie about someone when you realize and accept that it is a lie.  And being sick is nothing more than believing you can suffer from a lie called sickness.  If we suffer from anything it is because we permit it entrance into our experience.
Aw, the word “blasphemies” is next.  This word does not mean cussing or taking the name of God in vain.  Blasphemy means to break the law, in particular God’s Law.  When Jesus healed on the Sabbath he was called a blasphemer because he was doing work on the Sabbath, and this was against Hebrew law.  They saw Jesus as a lawbreaker.  So anyone who practices animal magnetism is breaking God’s Law and really is a blasphemer.
Now you know what really defiles you!

Earliest investigations
“Mesmerism or animal magnetism was first brought into notice by Mesmer in Germany in 1775.  According to the American Cyclopedia, he regarded this so-called force, which he said could be exerted by one living organism over another, as a means of alleviating disease.  His propositions were as follows:
“‘There exists a mutual influence between the celestial bodies, the earth, and animated things.  Animal bodies are susceptible to the influence of this agent, disseminating itself through the substance of the nerves.’” (S&H 100:1-11)
The year 1775 is one year before the United States became one Nation under God.  I also find it interesting that Mesmer first noticed mesmerism 100 years before Science and Health was first published.  Mesmer was looking for a cure for disease, perhaps his motives were pure, but the main point is that mesmerism is evil because it literally has one person (living organism) exerting this so-called force over another person (living organism).  Remember that zodiac means living being (a living organism), but it is the belief that this life takes place in matter, while zoon for the four living creatures is the acceptance that Life lives and resides only in Spirit, or the One spiritual Being.
What is this mutual influence between the celestial bodies, the earth, and animated things?  In Truth it would have to be divine Mind.  If this “mutual influence” is mortal mind, then it is not of God!  Mesmer felt that animal bodies (mortal bodies) are susceptible to the influence of this agent (again if it is not divine Mind’s influence then it is not of God), disseminating itself through the substance of the nerves.  The substance of the nerves is nothing more than the serpent in the Garden of Eden (living organism or material body).  Nerves seem to feel pain (evil) and pleasure (good) only because of electricity.  Electric signals are transmitted between the brain and the nervous system.  The brain is Adam and the nervous system is the serpent wrapped around the backbone of Adam.  Nerves are material substance; hence, they are not true substance.
“In 1784, the French government ordered the medical faculty of Paris to investigate Mesmer’s theory and to report upon it.  Under this order a commission was appointed, and Benjamin Franklin was one of the commissioners.  This commission reported to the government as follows:
“‘In regard to the existence and utility of animal magnetism, we have come to the unanimous conclusions that there is no proof of the existence of the animal magnetic fluid; that the violent effects, which are observed in the public practice of magnetism, are due to manipulations, or to the excitement of the imagination and the impressions made upon the senses; and that there is one more fact to be recorded in the history of the errors of the human mind, and an important experiment upon the power of the imagination.’” (S&H 100:12-101:7)
Mesmer’s “theory” must have been that there existed an animal magnetic fluid (a liquid or gas).  But no such thing could be found.  I feel that this is because animal magnetism is totally a mental practice that has no material makeup or structure to it.  It is also important to understand that animal magnetism lives in the environment of “manipulations,” “to the excitement of the imagination and the impressions made upon the [physical] senses.”  Is not this how voodoo works?
I like the end of the sentence, that “there is one more fact to be recorded in the history of errors of the human mind [not divine Mind], and an important experiment upon the power of the imagination.”

Clairvoyance, magnetism
“In 1837, a committee of nine persons was appointed, among whom were Roux, Bouillaud, and Cloquet, which tested during several sessions the phenomena exhibited by a reputed clairvoyant.  Their report stated the results as follows:
“‘The facts, which had been promised by Monsiur Berna [the magnetizer][6] as conclusive, and as adapted to throw light on physiological and therapeutical questions, are certainly not conclusive in favor of the doctrine of animal magnetism, and have nothing in common with either physiology or therapeutics.’
“This report was adopted by the Royal Academy of Medicine in Paris.” (S&H 101:8-20)
Clairvoyance is to see, or discern beyond matter.  It is important to understand that she is calling Monsiur Berna a “magnetizer” and a “reputed clairvoyant.”  I feel that by doing this she is telling the reader that magnetism is unseen by mortal eye because it takes place in the mental realm of mortal minded thought.
What is of importance by the committee is that animal magnetism has nothing in common with physiology or therapeutics.  But the report does not say that animal magnetism cannot manipulate physiology and therapeutics.

Personal conclusions [of Mary Baker Eddy]
“The author’s own observations of the workings of animal magnetism convince her that it is not a remedial agent [does not cure sickness or illness], and that its effects upon those who practise it, and upon their subjects who do not resist it, lead to moral and to physical death.
“If animal magnetism seems to alleviate or to cure disease, this appearance is deceptive, since error cannot remove the effects of error.  Discomfort under error is preferable to comfort.  In no instance is the effect of animal magnetism, recently called hypnotism, other than the effect of illusion.  Any seeming benefit derived from it is proportional to one’s faith in esoteric magic.” (S&H 101:21-32)
Well, you cannot get much more clearer than that!  Animal magnetism does not heal or cure disease.
Why does she say that, “discomfort under error is preferable to comfort”?  I think it is because if we are comfortable in error we never care to leave error or get out of it.  It is the discomfort that forces us to look for peace and harmony.
Esoteric has to do with knowledge of a small circle!  Esoteric magic would then represent the wheel of mystical powers and forces.  It is good to know, however, that the only benefit, and non-benefit, that can come from this circle of error is proportional to one’s faith in it.

Mere negation
“Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human.  Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind.
“There is but one real attraction, that of Spirit.  The pointing of the needle to the pole symbolizes this all-embracing power or the attraction of God, divine Mind.
“The planets have no more power over man than over his Maker, since God governs the universe; but man, reflecting God’s power, has dominion over all the earth and its hosts.” (S&H 102:1-15)  This man is the man of the Sixth Day of Truth in Genesis 1.
Negation means, “a negative statement, judgment, or doctrine esp: a logical proposition formed by asserting the falsity of a given proposition; something that is the absence of something actual:  nonentity; something considered the opposite of something regarded as positive.”[7]
By using the word “planets” she is speaking of astrology.

Hidden agents
“The mild forms of animal magnetism are disappearing, and its aggressive features are coming to the front.  The looms of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, are every hour weaving webs more complicated and subtle.  So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence [slow to move; indolent – to feel pain], and produce the very apathy [lack of interest or concern] on the subject which the criminal desires.  The following is an extract from the Boston Herald:
“‘Mesmerism is a problem not lending itself to an easy explanation and development.  It implies the exercise of despotic control, and is much more likely to be abused by its possessor, than otherwise employed, for the individual or society.’” (S&H 102:16-29)
I cannot help but think of the Matrix movies with the paragraph heading of “Hidden agents.”  These agents would take over (despotic control) of the individual’s body at any time or moment.  And remember that these agents sometimes wound up killing those they possessed!
Not one of us could be despotically controlled by animal magnetism if we remain awake!
Many movies depict the villain as having mesmeric powers.  From The Beast Master (I like this name) comes the priest who uses mesmerism to control his subjects (the civilization).  The Beast Master has control over the living beasts, the zoon, and he overcomes priestcraft.  In Conan the Barbarian there is once again the evil villain who has his own religion and uses mesmerism, he even uses snakes (serpents) as his symbol and turns them into weapons (arrows of poison).

Mental despotism
“Mankind must learn that evil is not power.  Its so-called despotism [even under the disguise of church organization] is but a phase of nothingness.  Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community.  The Apostle Paul refers to the personification of evil as ‘the god of this world,’ and further defines it as dishonesty and craftiness [like the serpent’s wisdom is].  Sin was the Assyrian moon-god.” (S&H 102:30-103:5)
The woman God-crowned has dominion over Sin, because her feet are upon the moon!  Also, the moon and its forces play an important part in astrology.

Liberation of mental powers
“The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family.  As in the beginning, however, this liberation does not scientifically show itself in a knowledge of both good and evil [the forbidden fruit], for the latter is unreal.
“On the other hand, Mind-science is wholly separate from any half-way impertinent knowledge [astrology; wisdom of the serpent], because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only.  The maximum of good is the infinite God and His idea, the All-in-all.  Evil is a suppositional lie.” (S&H 103:6-17)

The genus of error
“As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind.  It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good [the forbidden fruit]; that evil is as real as good and more powerful.  This belief has not one quality of Truth.  It is either ignorant or malicious.  The malicious form of hypnotism ultimates in moral idiocy.  The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of mortal mind, whose flimsy and gaudy pretensions, like silly moths, singe their own wings and fall into dust [where Adam and the serpent reside].” (S&H 103:18)

Thought-transference
“In reality there is no mortal mind, and consequently no transference of mortal thought and will-power.  Life and being are of God.  In Christian Science, man can do no harm, for scientific thoughts are true thoughts, passing from God to man.  [“Angels.  God’s thoughts passing to man” S&H 581:4]
“When Christian Science and animal magnetism are both comprehended, as they will be at no distant date, it will be seen why the author of this book has been so unjustly persecuted and belied by wolves in sheep’s clothing [the spiritually wicked in high places of authority; the second beast spoken of in Revelation].
“Agassiz, the celebrated naturalist and author, has wisely said:  ‘Every great scientific truth goes through three stages.  First, people say it conflicts with the Bible.  Next, they say it has been discovered before.  Lastly, they say they have always believed it.’” (S&H 103:29-104:12)  Unfortunately, some people never seem to get past the first stage!

Perfection of divine government
“Christian Science goes to the bottom of mental action and reveals the theodicy which indicates the rightness of all divine action, as the emanation of divine Mind, and the consequent wrongness of the opposite so-called action—evil, occultism, necromancy, mesmerism, animal magnetism, hypnotism.” (S&H 104:13)
Theodicy means, “defense of God’s goodness and omnipotence in view of the existence of evil.”[8]

Adulteration of Truth
“The medicine of Science is divine Mind; and dishonesty, sensuality, falsehood, revenge, malice, are animal propensities and by no means the mental qualities which heal the sick.  The hypnotizer employs one error to destroy another.  If he heals sickness through a belief, and a belief originally caused the sickness, it is a case of the greater error overcoming the lesser.  This greater error thereafter occupies the ground, leaving the case worse than before it was grasped by the stronger error.” (S&H 104:19)
Remember, Jesus spoke of adultery in the Bible heading.

Motives considered
“Our courts recognize evidence to prove the motive as well as the commission of a crime.  Is it not clear that the human mind must move the body to a wicked act?  Is not mortal mind the murderer?  The hands, without mortal mind to direct them, could not commit a murder.” (S&H 104:29-105:2)

Mental crimes
“Courts and juries judge and sentence mortals in order to restrain crime, to prevent deeds of violence or to punish them.  To say that these tribunals have not jurisdiction over the carnal or mortal mind, would be to contradict precedent and to admit that the power of human law is restricted to matter, while mortal mind, evil, which is the real outlaw, defies justice and is recommended to mercy.  Can matter commit a crime?  Can matter be punished?  Can you separate the mentality from the body over which courts hold jurisdiction?  Mortal mind, not matter, is the criminal in every case; and human law rightly estimates crime, and courts reasonably pass sentence, according to the motive.” (S&H 105:3)

Important decision
“When our laws eventually take cognizance of mental crime and no longer apply legal rulings wholly to physical offences, these words of Judge Parmenter of Boston will become historic:  ‘I see no reason why metaphysics is not as important to medicine as to mechanics or mathematics.’” (S&H 105:16)

Evil let loose
“Whoever uses his developed mental powers like an escaped felon to commit fresh atrocities as opportunity occurs is never safe.  God will arrest him.  Divine justice will manacle him.  His sins will be millstones about his neck, weighing him down to the depths of ignominy and death.  The aggravation of error foretells its doom, and confirms the ancient axiom:  ‘Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.’” (S&H 105:22)
This certainly came to in regards to Richard Kennedy, Mary Baker Glover’s second student.  Kennedy turned to animal magnetism and turned against his teacher.  Eventually he was placed into a mental hospital.
A millstone is a round circle of stone, a divine calculus.  The millstone is used as a symbol for the Christ in Daniel.  It is actually King Nebuchadnezzar that dreams about the millstone that destroys the kingdoms of error.  Daniel also tells us that this same king went mad (for a while).

The misuse of mental power
“The distance from ordinary medical practice to Christian Science is full many a league in the line of light; but to go in healing from the use of inanimate drugs to the criminal misuse of human will-power, is to drop from the platform [declaration of principles] of common manhood into the very mire of iniquity, to work against the free course of honesty and justice, and to push vainly against the current running heavenward.” (S&H 105:30-106:5)

Proper self-government
“Like our nation, Christian Science has its Declaration of Independence.  God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience.  Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.
“Man’s rights are invaded when the divine order is interfered with, and the mental trespasser incurs the divine penalty due this crime.” (S&H 106:6-14)
Let us take her sentence, “Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love” seriously.  Let every politician in our country take this mandate and live by it!

Right methods
“Let this age, which sits in judgment on Christian Science, sanction only such methods as are demonstrable in Truth and known by their fruit, and classify all others as did St. Paul in his great epistle to the Galatians, when he wrote as follows:
“‘Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like:  of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance:  against such there is no law.’” (S&H 106:15-29)
It has brought out that because witchcraft is in italics that special attention should be given to it.  One definition of witchcraft has to do with communication with the devil.  Certainly this should be something none of us should ever do.  How do we avoid communicating with the devil?  I think it is by understanding that we are at one mental consciousness with God at all times and all places – this is the true Atonement.
Paul’s words reflect Jesus’ words at the beginning of the chapter; we have gone full circle.
Elsewhere Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “astrology is secondary.”  This means that astrology must be placed under the angel’s left foot!  To me this also means that we are not to ignore astrology because we are Christian Scientists.  We are to investigate what it is saying and uncover the serpent wisdom found in it so that we can annihilate animal magnetism.  Not only is there the main astrology that most people think of but there is also a Chinese zodiac, also made up of animals.  The Chinese zodiac does not only cover every month of the year but it also covers twelve-year cycles.  The year of the dog is a year in the tone of that zodiac symbol.  As Christian Scientists are we investigating these ancient religions?  Are we figuring out what they are saying and presenting to us about the carnal mind and mortal body?  If the answer is no, then we are not unmasking animal magnetism.
We cannot understand astrology if we do not understand Moses’ layout of the Thirteen Tribes, Ezekiel’s Wheel, John’s Throne of God, and Mary Baker Eddy’s Window of the Open Book.  If we fail to understand the Unity Matrix then we cannot nullify astrology or animal magnetism.

[1] Could it be that the ancient science of astronomy was turned into the ancient religion of astrology?

[2] This definition makes me think about one of the Ten Commandments, the one about not having any graven images.
