Mary Baker Eddy’s Place – Preface of a Woman

by MJSmith

Preface of a Woman

Who is worthy to open the book, and loose the seals?  Who has the right or privilege, for “No man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.”[1]  Since “no man” is given the place (mission) to open the book (the Bible) then the job is given to a woman.

MARY BAKER EDDY’S PLACE

In 1943 the Board of Directors for The First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, printed a little pamphlet titled Mrs. Eddy’s Place.  Perhaps not all Christian Scientists are familiar with the pamphlet that has Six-Points, since it has been pulled from all Reading Rooms.  Today, however, there is importance in bringing it to the thought of a new generation of Christian Scientists because many of them probably have not read it.
Christian Science and Organized Religion, by Hugh A. Studdert-Kennedy,[2] (copyright 1930 and 1961) begins on page 1 with: “IT HAS BEEN WELL SAID that once in every fifty years every great truth must be restated.  Once in every fifty years a new generation has arisen-a generation that not only knew not Joseph, but knew not Joseph’s children.  Modes and methods of thought have changed, and while there are yet many who can accommodate themselves with rejoicing, it is still true that every age must have its wayside pulpit which talks of the things of everyday experience and translates them into the things of the spirit.”

“The [1943] July issue [of The Christian Science Journal] included a major announcement.  The committee of editors, which had been appointed in 1938 by the Directors, had finished collecting all the published and unpublished statements of Mrs. Eddy’s which would shed light on her place in Bible prophecy.  The committee’s report consisted of fifty-seven typewritten pages.  These had been reduced to six points.  The report did not really present anything which was not already generally accepted as true among the Christian Science teachers and individuals in the field.  The statement signed by the Christian Science Board of Directors, first appeared in the June 5, 1943, Christian Science Sentinel and then in the July Journal.  It was entitled ‘Mrs. Eddy’s Place.’”[3]

In the pamphlet the, then, Board of Directors makes Mary Baker Eddy’s place in Bible prophecy clear, that she is the woman God-crowned found in Revelation’s twelfth chapter.
Today, however, there seems to be a great controversy over Mary Baker Eddy’s place.  This is due to the red dragon’s propaganda (flood), the dragon’s six tricks.  The drag-on’s resistance of thought in regard to the truth about Mary Baker Eddy being the woman God-crowned is really what is behind today’s controversy.

Red Dragon.  Error; fear; inflammation; sensuality; subtlety; animal magnetism; envy; revenge.” (S&H 593:7)  The red dragon resists the fullness of the Christ.  Originally this red dragon was the red snake in the Garden of Eden.  This red color pertains to Adam, made from the Adamah clay that was red.  If you read what Mary Baker Eddy writes about Adam, Jehovah, and the red dragon, you come to understand that the three are all one being, or rather a counterfeit of the one Being.

It is because of the red dragon’s resisting thought that today we have groups of Christian Scientists at odds upon the topic of Mary Baker Eddy fulfilling Bible prophecy and being the second coming of Christ.
In a letter given to the Board of Directors, along with an illustration of The First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, Mary Baker Eddy speaks of both the letter and illustration bringing to remembrance to her followers about her place in Bible prophecy.  The Endtime Center’s Standard, of November 2004, page 5, writes about Constantine’s use of the cross on his shields and helmets; the cross being a symbol of Christ’s victory over death.  And with the cross were the words, “Hoc Signo Vinces [in this sign you will be victorious].”[4]  They continue on page 6, “Referring to ‘future history’ in her letter, Mrs. Eddy does not say ‘your lives,’ but ‘our lives,’ – which includes herself leading her followers in battle against the [red] dragon of antichrist.  The great church victories of the future are to be led by her – How?  By recognizing her as the important ‘one signal’ – the victory signal of the dual Christ, the morning star[5] [6] and its beam of light[7] shown throughout Christ and Christmas… Mrs. Eddy foresaw that the dual Christ would be understood in a future dispensation, that is, at the earliest time when thought was prepared to receive it.  That time came in the 1990s when it was proclaimed publicly in The Christian Science Standard by Stanley C. Larkin.”[8]

Today’s Board of Directors does not publish Mrs. Eddy’s Place.  I have recently been told that the report of 57 pages that Mrs. Eddy’s Place was based upon is found in the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston.  This was good news for me to hear and I pray that it is true.

The following is the pamphlet:

Mrs. Eddy’s Place

As published in the Christian Science Sentinel,

June 5, 1943

The position of The Mother Church as to Mary Baker Eddy’s place in the fulfillment of Bible prophecy is clearly set forth in the following paragraphs.  These conclusions are not new; they are confirmed by our Leader’s writings, and the steadily unfolding fruitage of Christian Science bears witness to their truth.

  1. Mrs. Eddy, as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, understood herself to be the one chosen of God to bring the promised Comforter to the world, and, therefore, the revelator of Christ, Truth, in this age.
  1. Mrs. Eddy regarded portions of Revelation  (that is, Chapter 12) as pointing to her as the one who fulfilled prophecy by giving the full and final revelation of Truth; her work thus being complementary to that of Christ Jesus.
  1. As Christ Jesus exemplified the fatherhood of God, she (Mrs. Eddy) revealed God’s motherhood; she represents in this age the spiritual idea of God typified by the woman in the Apocalypse.  (See Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 565:13-22.)
  1. Mrs. Eddy considered herself to be the “God-appointed” and “God-anointed” messenger to this age, the woman chosen by God to discover the Science of Christian healing and to interpret it to mankind; she is so closely related to Christian Science that a true sense of her is essential to the understanding of Christian Science; in other words, the revelator cannot be separated from the revelation.
  1. This recognition of her true status enabled her to withstand the opposition directed against her by “the dragon” (malicious animal magnetism); she was touchingly grateful to those who saw her as the woman of prophecy and who therefore trusted, obeyed, and supported her in her mission.
  1. This same recognition is equally vital to our movement, for demonstration is the result of vision; the collecting of this indisputable evidence of our Leader’s own view of herself and of her mission marks a great step forward; wisely utilized, this evidence will stimulate and stabilize the growth of Christian Scientists today and in succeeding generations; it will establish unity in the Field with regard to the vital question of our Leader’s relation to Scriptural prophecy.

As we record these important facts, we remind Christian Scientist of our Leader’s words (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 308), “The Scriptures and Christian Science reveal ‘the way,’ and personal revelators will take their proper place in history, but will not be deified.”

The Christian Science

Board of Directors

A strong thought came to me that St. John’s fourth vision[9] somehow correlated with this little pamphlet and its Six-Points.  Could it be that St. John’s six-points of establishment to support and prove the fourth vision correlates with the pamphlet’s Six-Points?
Studies In the Apocalypse of John of Patmos, based upon a lecture series by Edyth Armstrong Hoyt, explains John’s seven visions and how they are set up according to the structure of apocalyptic writing.  Apocalyptic writing is based upon, what I have come to call, the Minor Pyramid Matrix of Principle.  (Individual Christian Scientists are probably familiar with it as the “Golden Candlestick Matrix” that John Doorly gave to the world.)
The following is the outline of St. John’s fourth vision.  It is not in the matrix form as found in Studies in the Apocalypse of John of Patmos, because I feel that you may understand it better if you first see it in its linear form.  In the matrix layout of Vision IV the capstone of section four is at the top.  Underneath it is section three on the left and five on the right, thus the two establishments correlate with each other.  Underneath this is section two on left and section six is on the right.  And the bottom foundation is section one on the left and section seven on the right.

In the Pyramid Matrix of Principle for Christ and Christmas[10] the first seven illustrations form the same structure as the Golden Candlestick Matrix.  And illustrations eight to eleven work their way up the center of the pyramid as the divine calculus.  Thus we have, as our foundation stone illustrations, “Star of Bethlehem” as Mind, “Christian Science Treatment” as Christianity, and “Suffer [Permit} the Children to Come Unto Me” as Love.  The first step up has “Christ Healing” as Spirit, “Christian Unity” as the Christ, and “Christian Science Healing” as Truth.  The second step up has “Seeking and Finding” as Soul, “Truth [Re]versus Error” as the Word, and “Christmas Morn” as Life.  The final step up takes us to “Christmas Eve” working as the capstone of Principle along side the two different illustrations of “The Way” as Science itself.  Likewise we have the co-in-side-ence of the Church edifice windows and symbols fitting in.  I will explain how this Minor Matrix structure fits in with John’s fourth vision and the pamphlet in this piece.
Hoyt writes about the main focal point of Vision 4 on page 177, “The fourth and climax vision shows the full and complete Revelation of the Christ, also called the New Jerusalem, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, and here [Rev. 12] symbolized by the woman bringing forth her child.  It is difficult to find words to describe the full glory and meaning of this amazing vision, for it is indeed wonderful.  After the important Revelation is given, it is followed in this vision by six points of establishment to support and prove it, six points which completely annihilate all phases of the dragon thought, the phases of resistance to the Truth.  In the instances John is about to relate, you will notice that the dragon would try to tear-down the Revelation by many different tricks.”  (Studies In the Apocalypse of John of Patmos)  It is these six points of establishment that I feel correlate with the six points written in the pamphlet Mrs. Eddy’s Place.

“To-day’s lesson” – is found inRevelation’s twelfth chapter within the fourth vision.  Mary Baker Eddy tells us that it “has a special suggestiveness in connection with the nineteenth century.  In opening of the sixth seal, typical of six thousand years since Adam, the distinctive feature has reference to the present age.”  (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 560:1)  She is making it clear that St. John’s forth vision has to do with the nineteenth century and it is during this time period, when she gives birth to Christian Science, that man understands his dominion over the earth as mentioned in Genesis 1:26-31, in the Sixth Day of Truth.  Up until the nineteenth century man has not been able to demonstrate dominion over the earth, even if he thought he had.  Why?  Because, due to materially organized religion he had not understood Jesus’ teachings of Christian Science, nor had he understood Christ Jesus.

In the Sixth Day, of Genesis 1, man is created in God’s image [Manhood] and likeness [Womanhood], or in God’s image [Fatherhood] and likeness [Motherhood].  In the Sixth Day man is now able to demonstrate his God given dominion over sin, sickness, disease, and death (which represent the four horsemen of Revelation 6) because of Mary Baker Eddy.  In this Sixth Day Revelation was completed (prophecy was finished and fulfilled).  And now, because of the fulfillment of Bible prophecy, in the Seventh Day God rests in perfect action – Love (illumination).
It is interesting that Mary Baker Eddy told us it would be about fifty years (from 1901) that the woman God-crowned would be spoken of as being her.  This was done first by the publishing of the little pamphlet in 1943 and then again when Bliss Knapp published his book in 1947 (which was suppressed by Boston).
Did the Board of Directors change their opinions about Mary Baker Eddy’s place over this five-year period?  The Board responded to Knapp in a letter.  In it they said, “In a word, neither the human identity of Jesus nor the human identity of Mrs. Eddy was known to God or foreseen by the prophets, but as individual states of human consciousness they each in their own way perceived and reflected the Christ, the true nature of God, in such marked degree that they became the human avenues of thought through which prophecy was fulfilled[11]…[W]e ask that as a first step you request the withdrawal of the book from the Library of Congress…In addition to withdrawing the book from the library, we recommend that, with the exception of such copies as may be essential for the purpose of editing, you call in all copies, so that both the books and the plates may be destroyed by you.”[12]
One of these plates they wanted destroyed was of the drawing seen below.  You will notice that Mary Baker Eddy is depicted in it along side Jesus Christ.

I say that the Board took action mostly because they were not getting money from the book, and that was a really big no-no!  But the book also stood and proclaimed Mary Baker Eddy to be the woman God-crowned, as you will note their exact words, “neither the human identity of Jesus nor the human identity of Mrs. Eddy was known to God…”   This of course is not true!  And how many Christians out there are mad about this statement saying that God did not know the human identity of Jesus?  I bet there are a lot (if they wind up reading this).  I am more inclined to believe that the prophets did not know the identities of Jesus or Mary.  However, I am not going to rule it out, for with divine Mind all things are possible!
Andrew Hartsook states in his book, on page 90, “This letter from the Board not only ordered the suppression of The Destiny of The Mother Church but also showed that the misconception expressed by Frederick Dixon (but not necessarily originated by him) in his article ‘Mortal Mind and Human Mind’ in the September 1, 1917, Sentinel had by 1948 become the view of the majority of the Directors.  This theosophical doctrine ‘God doesn’t know anything about us’, had supplanted Mrs. Eddy’s teaching only thirty-eight years after her passing.  This new view totally misconstrued the transitional qualities in the ‘Scientific Translation of Mortal Mind’ which she gives on page 115 and 116 of Science and Health and which is illustrated when she writes, ‘The testimony of Holy Writ sustains the fact in Science, that the heavens and earth to one human consciousness, that consciousness which God bestows, are spiritual, while to another, the unillumined human mind, the vision is material.  This shows unmistakably that what the human mind terms matter and spirit indicates states and stages of consciousness.’ [S&H p. 573]”[13]
This seems to raise the question about the litigation quarrel, between the Board of Directors and the Editing Trustees, that if the Board of Directors were not actually correct in the removal of the Trustees (Frederick Dixon) if they were the ones promoting the false teaching as mentioned above.  How did and why did the Board’s thoughts change upon this particular topic and why?  It had to be the subtlety of the red serpent’s false wisdom.  Evidently, the Board’s human opinion (dogma) became the wormwood poured into the pure spiritual teachings, the waters, by the woman; these teachings, in part, are about the woman.
St. John’s fourth vision begins with Revelation 11:19 – “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in this temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightenings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.” [14]
The important thing to understand with Revelation 11:19 is that it is now possible for man to go directly unto God, there is no longer a separation (a veil) between the individual and God.  The Ark of the Covenant (testament) is seen in God’s temple.  Thinking back to Noah when God gave the sign (symbol) of the rainbow, he gave man a new covenant (original covenant).  (I call this new covenant the Arch of the Covenant.)  It is the angel messenger in Revelation 10 who delivers the “little book” of Science and Health.  This angel, “clothed with a cloud,” has “a rainbow upon his head.”  Thus this angel messenger (Michael) is a sign of the covenant held between God and man.  “And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.” (Genesis 9:16)  Mary Baker Eddy, being the “messenger” of the “little book” is the angel Michael “Who is like God?”[15]  It was her manhood mission that scribed the “little book.”  Because Revelation 10 comes before Revelation 11:19 we understand why man no longer has a need for a mediator.  Man understands his dominion or his oneness with God because he reflects the Christ (Mediator) Mind, thus, he can go directly to the Source because the promise of the Arch of the Covenant is complete.  Following this revelation, that man needs no medium, the woman God-crowned is now brought to John’s attention.  It is Mary Baker Eddy’s womanhood mission (of the angel Gabriel “devoted to God”) that is referred to as the woman God-crowned, she is “clothed with the sun.”  She has a crown (a symbol of dominion given in the Fourth Day of Genesis, with its two great “ruling” lights) of twelve stars (representing the 12 nations of Israel, a symbol of completeness).

[1] Revelation 5:3

[2] Hugh A. Studdert-Kennedy made the Board of Directors most unhappy with this book, so much so that in 1943 they refused to let him publish his biography on Mary Baker Eddy.

[3] CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AFTER 1910; by Andrew W. Hartsook; p. 75

[4] During Easter (2012) I watched a program on the History Channel about this Roman emperor (the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church).  It turns out that the vision he claimed to have had about the cross was all a lie.

[5] The “morning star” and the “evening star” are two different names for the planet Venus; thus, they are two as one body.  Jesus Christ, being the “evening star” is the first great light (Gen. 1; on the 4th Day) while Mary Baker Eddy, being the “morning star” is the second great light (Gen. 1; on the 4th Day).  This has meaning in regards to Christ and Christmas’s fourth and fifth illustrations titled:  “Christmas Eve” and “Christmas Morn.”

[6] Jesus Christ referred to stars as angels (Rev. 1:20).  I also feel that the word star refers to a prophet, the stars are prophets, or those with prophetic insight (spiritual insight), thus when we hear “the Star of Boston” who else can it refer to but Mary Baker Eddy?  For she is the angel-prophet of Boston.

[7] These beams of light always (accept one time) have the shape of a pyramid or triangle.

[8] I had not read a Standard or heard of Stanley C. Larkin until 1997 or 1998.

[9] Vision 4 covers Revelation 11:19-14:20, it is his capstone vision.

[10] Christ and Christmas is an illustrated poem by Mary Baker Eddy with eleven drawings.

[11] Notice that this Board does admit that Mary Baker Eddy fulfilled Bible prophecy.

[12] This portion of the letter is found in Andrew Hartsook’s book, Christian Science after 1910.

[13] Bliss Knapp was awake to this type of erroneous teaching and he wrote a letter to the Board of Directors about it.  The Christian Science Standard writes about the article and Knapp’s letter in their October 2006 issue of Volume 14, Number 4.  You may get a copy of it by writing to the Christian Science Endtime Center, P.O. Box 27539, Denver, CO  80277.  I highly recommend that you read it.

[14] Temple refers to body, Church.  The true Church of God was to be opened up, or revealed in heaven (as the divinity [daughterhood] of God).  The ark, of the covenant, was to be fulfilled; this brought about spiritual insight, the new tongue, and spiritual understanding, to shake up the earth (the humanifestation [sonhood] of God) and cause great destruction to the carnally minded.

[15] When I speak of Mary Baker Eddy as being the angels Michael and Gabriel, I do not mean that she is literally an angel, a being with a halo and wings, I mean that she is God’s messenger and it was her manhood qualities [of Michael] and her Womanhood qualities [of Gabriel] that enabled her to accomplish her mission in life to be that messenger, or the Scribe of God.
